Noumea Since the bombs and riots of the 1980s, Noumea has begun a swag of new developments unparalleled since the heady days of the nickel boom. Political rallies today are more likely to be protesting forced redundancies and cuts to services than demanding an end to French rule. From Anse Vata in the south, Noumea's most prestigious beach, to the northern suburbs of Koutiou and Yahoue, the town measures little more than 15km (9.3mi).The city centre spreads along Baie de la Moselle to the west, a fine harbour with good shelter for cruise liners, fishing boats and a fleet of private yachts. Further west lies Nouville, site of the colony's first penal settlement, and now connected to the mainland by fill from the nickel smelters. Immediately north of central Noumea the land is mainly industrial, with uninteresting residential and industrial suburbs beyond. On the eastern edge of the peninsula lie the well-to-do waterside suburbs of Ste Marie and Ouemo. Île des Pins Often the only part of New Caledonia outside Grande Terre that many travellers experience, the Île des Pins has as its main claim to fame extraordinary beaches and bays. The people are mostly Kanaks, and the island was spared the worst violence of the 1980s. Perhaps as a consequence, the islanders are welcoming and friendly to travellers. The best of the island's beaches are at Kuto, which also attracts most of the tourists. Many of the places to stay and restaurants are clustered around here, and at the Baie de Kuto local people come at dusk to fish. The penal colony governor's residence, the gendarmerie, the prison ruins and the Cimetière des Déportées are all worth exploring.

Agreement on the Future of New Caledonia Signed in Paris on 26 June 1988
The New Caledonian communities have suffered too much in their collective dignity, in the integrity of persons and property, from several decades of lack of understanding and violence. Some of them consider that only in the framework of the institutions of the French Republic will evolution towards a harmonious New Caledonia be possible. Others take the view that a way out of this situation is thinkable only through an assertion of sovereignty and independence. The clash of these two opposing beliefs has led until recently to a situation bordering on civil war. Today the two parties have acknowledged the imperative necessity of contributing towards the establishment of civil peace, in order to create the conditions enabling the population freely to choose, with confidence in their future, how to take their destiny in hand. This is why they have agreed to administrative authority over the Territory being resumed by the State for the next twelve months.

O ur most recent sailing trip was to Nouvelle Caledonie this year (2002). We rented a 39' Kirie Feeling for one week. The hardened crew of salty sea dogs. Sean is taking the photo... presumably after a few drinks. Nouvelle Caledonie was stunning. First was the surprise of finding a totally different French-speaking culture on a Pacific island less than two hours flight from home (!) Then was the sheer beauty of the islands, especially Isle de Pins where we spent most of our time. The place was virtually deserted so we often had huge sweeping bays all to ourselves. Marvelling at the sheer majesty of sea cucumbers. A nice quiet bay surrounded by pines. Helen performing her captain's duty of testing for sharks. Isle de Pins delivered the goods. It had fabulous beaches and bays, interesting vegetation on shore and some weirdo small sculpted islands off shore. We had a welcoming committee of dolphins, and the night time sea life was a hoot with the boat attracting amongst other things sucker fish, cuttlefish and groups of small sharks that fed on the smaller fish seeking refuge underneath. Things got a little hairy when a "shy but deadly" sea snake took an interest in the boat and looked like it wanted to get on board. It then dropped to the floor of the bay and sat there for a while before swimming off. Odd. Sean eats a traditional Aussie breakfast of boiled egg topped with peanut paste, nutella and vegemite. I look on with interest to see if the traditional Aussie response of gagging and retching would follow. It didn't.
