The women, the bread, the food, the wine, the climate, the beaches and the wind are all awesome. Tahitians call the sport of kiteboarding "fly surfing" because of their French affiliation. For reasons only known to them, (when you boost, you FLY?) the Tahitians have been using flysurfing as their term of choice on the islands since day one. Overall, the kiteboarding, kitesurfing, kiteflying, and flysurfing conditions on Tahiti and her islands are excellent, but they vary from island to island. The Society Islands of French Polynesia are commonly referred to as "Tahiti" by many, although that is a misnomer because Tahiti is really just one of over 130 different islands of the 5 separate archipelagos (group of islands) that comprise French Polynesia as a whole. The island of Tahiti itself just happens to be located in the windward group of the Society Islands archipelago.

issue 195 - May 1989 New Caledonia / Kanaky To many visitors, Noumea, the capital of New Caledonia, appears to be a French riviera town transported to the South Pacific. Its beaches, hotels and fake Parisian chic have long been a great attraction for Australian tourists. This is not surprising since New Caledonia is an overseas department of France. But many of the inhabitants prefer the post-colonial name of ‘Kanaky’ and this is one of the keys to the country’s deep racial and political divisions. The substantial French settler population, many of whom came from Vietnam (French Indo-China) and Algeria, have decisively changed the character of the territory leaving the indigenous Melanesians bitter. Only 43 per cent of the 150,000 people are indigenous Kanaks. The rest are European settlers and others, including about 12,000 people from another French Pacific possession, Wallis Island. The Kanaks say the Wallis Islanders were brought in specifically to alter the balance of the population structure. In the 19th century New Caledonia, annexed by France in 1853, seemed destined to become a tiny Australia with convicts and political prisoners sent out from France. Already by 1900 the numbers of Melanesians and Europeans was about equal. During the Great Depression many settlers departed to be replaced by others in the 1960s as nickel deposits were developed.

New Caledonia - Day 1
Flying In
My wife decided some time ago I needed a holiday. So she offered to shout me a trip overseas, preferably to somewhere warm. Bugger. We looked at the various options - Australia, sundry Pacific Islands - and I plunked for New Caledonia. Australia was out - didn't feel like going to Melbourne and have a limited desire to hit the Gold Coast - and most of the Pacific Islands elminated themselves one way or another (I am not giving money to the Tongan monarchy, Fiji seems dodgy, and Bali? You must be kidding!). Besides, New Caledonia sounded interesting. Now, I have to admit I was a little underprepared. This is true most times I travel; we have a friend who generally carefully researches places he goes works out how to make best use of the time he's got, and thoroughly enjoys himself having derived a good understanding of what he's seeing. This is an approach that doesn't really work for me. I prefer to find out a bit - things I'll kick myself if I miss, is there a civil war I should avoid, that sort of thing - and then amble off to see what I can see. I miss stuff a planner would see, and I see stuff a planner would miss. Of course, this approach works best when you speaka da lingo. I don't speak French, but I was sure I could get by. A touch overconfident perhaps.

The building has subsequently appeared in many architectural publications identifying this site as a significant contribution to world architecture. But more importantly indigenous people are also hailing the building as the first piece of architecture representing Pacific culture. This is surprising as the architect is Italian, the client is French and the location is the last of the Pacific colonies. .) By this he is referring to the adaptation of the open spaces and paths of traditional settlements for his building. The open space outdoor room typical of Pacific architecture has been covered in by Piano and the path that forms the spine becomes a corridor in the building. .) The building might be attempting to remain unconnected to the political events prior to it, and the leader it commemorates.

Since the bombs and riots of the 1980s, Noumea has begun a swag of new developments unparalleled since the heady days of the nickel boom. Political rallies today are more likely to be protesting forced redundancies and cuts to services than demanding an end to French rule. From Anse Vata in the south, Noumea's most prestigious beach, to the northern suburbs of Koutiou and Yahoue, the town measures little more than 15km (9.3mi).The city centre spreads along Baie de la Moselle to the west, a fine harbour with good shelter for cruise liners, fishing boats and a fleet of private yachts. Further west lies Nouville, site of the colony's first penal settlement, and now connected to the mainland by fill from the nickel smelters. Immediately north of central Noumea the land is mainly industrial, with uninteresting residential and industrial suburbs beyond. On the eastern edge of the peninsula lie the well-to-do waterside suburbs of Ste Marie and Ouemo. The Jean-Marie Tjibaou Cultural Centre is Noumea's newest and most exciting development, about 10km (6mi) from downtown. Designed to reflect the Kanaks' integral ties to the land, it successfully blends contemporary architectural style and indigenous cultural beliefs, and displays items of Kanak heritage and the cultures of Oceania. The colonial-style Biblioth¨que Bernheim is Noumea's main library and a great place to browse. It's pleasant and quiet despite nearby traffic. But to really escape the cars, go to the Noumea Aquarium at Anse Vata. It contains rare and unusual marine life, from sponges and coral through to the big fish with sharp teeth.

Pictish Nation
Welcome to the world's first web site dedicated to the Picts! On the web since 1994! In here I want to make some things available to potential Pictophiles and all others who come to visit. First of all, I want to create the world's first page dedicated to that ancient race (known as the Picts) whom once inhabited present day Scotland. I will try to link all Pictish pages on the web here. If you know of one I've missed, please email me with its URL and I will add it. Furthermore, for really serious Pictophiles, I recommend joining the Pictish Arts Society , which is truly the world's finest organization dedicated to preserving and expanding interest in Pictish culture. As such I enthusiastically recommend you join them! To read some books about the Picts visit the link at the bottom of the page. Finally, those of you who saw the TBS Special on June 28, 1998 "Tattoos: Women of the Ink", Let's get those letters flowing to the National Geographic and maybe they'll take a look at them too! If you liked the TBS piece, write to them and tell them you'd like them to do a program on the Picts! Their address is: Turner Original Productions, One CNN Center, Box 105366, Atlanta, GA 30348. I will also try to create links to artists who work in a Pictish genre and also WHERE you can find them. Since I believe that we about to see an explosion of interest in the art and history of these ancient people, I look forward to the page and its links changing all the time. Visit often!

On the other hand, if travellers just want to spend their days laying by the pool, dining in a multitude of restaurants, gambling their nights away or taking moonlit strolls along the beachfront, then New Caledonia is for you as well! Cosmopolitan Relaxation in New Caledonia
Ever heard of New Caledonia? Don't worry, not many people have (at least in North America, anyway). This scenic island chain lies deep in the South Pacific and provides a very different experience than you would find in better-known destinations like Fiji and French Polynesia. In a rather eclectic manner, New Caledonia blends the cultural sophistication of the French Riviera with the beauty and laid back nature of the South Pacific. This destination is ideal for those who want fine dining, foreign culture boutique shopping and beautiful white sand beaches all in one place. If you start to get antsy, Isle of Pines offers a number of options for casual exploration. One of its more interesting attractions is a series of caves. Ouatchia Cave, in particular, has beautiful stalagmites. You can see the island in a variety of ways, by foot, bicycle, 4WD, or boat. Try taking a traditional Melanesian outrigger canoe across the turquoise lagoon. Or, venture through the island's interior in a kayak. Seeing the countryside from the vantage point of the Dumbea, Tontouta and Blue Rivers makes for a memorable experience.
