1998 data The first humans to get here, were skilled navigators that came from Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands around 1500 BC. Their distinctive culture was characterized by an elaborate pinhole incised pottery that was first discovered at the "Lapita" site near the town of Koné on the northwest coast of Grande Terre, the main island. Subsequent research has identified the presence of the Lapita culture on the coasts of New Guinea as early as 2000 B.C. Their forebears had migrated south from Asia through the Indonesian archipelago bringing with them at the Austronesian languages whose roots have been traced to Taiwan. Some interbred with the earlier Papuan populations but most of these remarkable navigators continued their eastward expansion to Fiji, Tonga, Samoa and beyond, giving rise to the Polynesian nations and also migrated north to populate Micronesia. New Caledonia was given its name in 1774 by James Cook because the terrain reminded him of Scotland that was called Caledonia by the Romans. The French explored it in 1793 but the first to settle there were Samoan Protestant missionaries in the south in 1841 and French Catholic missionaries in the north in 1843. The French took possession of the island in 1853 and used it as a penal colony until full-scale colonization began at the end of the 19th century. The indigenous "Kanaks" were given French citizenship in 1946.

(The French, being French, like to dive in the morning and be back ashore in time for a long lunch.) There are wreck dives and drift dives, but for something different, head to the southern end of the island. Here, underwater hydrothermals have created a massive, 120-foot-high stalagmite known as the Needle of Prony that reaches to within 5 feet of the surface. New Caledonia New Caledonia, Fr. internally self-governing territory of France (1995 est. pop. 185,000), land area 7,241 sq mi (18,760 sq km), South Pacific, c.700 mi (1,130 km) E of Australia. It comprises the island of New Caledonia, the Isle of Pines, the Loyalty Islands , Walpole Island, and the Huon, Chesterfield, and Belep groups. The capital is on New Caledonia island. New Caledonia island, the largest island of the territory (6,223 sq mi/16,118 sq km), is mountainous and temperate in climate. The island of New Caledonia is rich in mineral resources, especially nickel, chrome, iron, manganese, cobalt, gold, and silver. It is densely forested in some places, but almost all the kauri pine that was once an important export has been cut down. The principal industries are the mining and refining of nickel, iron mining, the production of coffee and copra, and shrimp farming. Tourism is also important. Cattle and poultry are raised, but many foodstuffs must still be imported. France, Japan, and Australia are the largest trading partners. The population is about 45% Melanesian (Kanak) and 35% European (mostly French) with Polynesians in the outlying islands. French and several Melanesian and Polynesian dialects are spoken. About 60% of the population is Roman Catholic and 30% is Protestant. The government consists of a high commissioner appointed by France, an elected territorial congress, and a council. The territory is divided into three provinces, each with its own assembly.

Agreement on New Caledonia
Preamble
1. On 24 September 1853, when France claimed "Grande Terre", which James Cook had named "New Caledonia", it took possession of a territory in accordance with the conditions of international law, as recognised at that time by the nations of Europe and America. It did not establish legally formalised relations with the indigenous population. The treaties entered into with the customary authorities in 1854 and subsequent years did not represent balanced agreements but were, in fact, unilateral instruments. This territory, however, was not empty. Grande Terre and the outlying islands were inhabited by men and women now known as Kanaks. They had developed their own civilisation, with its traditions and languages, in which custom, which governed social and political life, prevailed. Their cultural and spiritual life was expressed through various forms of creativity. The Kanak identity was based on a particular relationship with land. Each individual and each clan defined itself in terms of a specific link to a valley, a hill, the sea or a river estuary and carried in its memory the acceptance of other families on its land. The names attached by tradition to each element of the landscape and the tabus affecting some of these, as well as the customary ways, gave structure to space and exchanges.
