Brunswick's History
Brunswick, Maine Street, circa 1900
Photo from the collection of the Pejepscot Historical Society O n June 13, 1889, the citizens of Brunswick observed their town's 150th anniversary with a series of celebrations. These began with a succession of gun salutes at sunrise, followed by a procession of "fantastics and horribles," a series of orations and speeches, and a sit-down dinner for 400. This featured (for the price of $1.00) "boned turkey, larded prairie chicken, Philadelphia capon, sliced ham, sliced tongue, lobster salad, chicken salad, ice cream, strawberries and cream, and five kinds of cake, (not including lady fingers, macaroons and kisses)". Following this came an afternoon of baseball, a reception, more gun salutes, and, finally, a display of fireworks. Aerial photo of Brunswick, 1953
From the collection of the Pejepscot Historical Society W hile the events of that day paint an appealing picture of American small-town tradition, they also included, through a series of speakers, a chance for the community to reflect on its progress since its founding in 1739. Writing about the celebration in the 1940's, historian Edward Chase Kirkland noted that by 1889, Brunswick had "shrugged off its rural chrysalis, yet still avoided the centralizing tendencies of business and metropolitan life." In many ways, this describes the Brunswick area today: Maine's largest town, Brunswick has emerged as a regional center, still somewhere between rural and urban, neither a college town nor a mill town nor a retirement haven, yet with elements of each. Brunswick is difficult to classify.

Location: New Brunswick New Brunswick
New Brunswick is one of the four Atlantic provinces of Canada. Forests cover about 85 percent of the land in New Brunswick and the manufacture of lumber, paper, and other forest products is important to the province's economy. New Brunswick also has rich farmland in the St John River Valley. Mineral deposits have been discovered in the northeastern part of the province and the province's rivers have been harnessed to provide electricity. Much of New Brunswick's early settlement came from American colonists who left after the American Revolution . Some 14,000 of these, known as United Empire Loyalists, began arriving in 1783. New Brunswick was one of the original provinces of the Canadian Confederation. One of its best known natural features is the Bay of Fundy , which it shares with Nova Scotia

Welcome........
We hope these pages will introduce you to our Department, and to the many ways we serve the community.
We have attempted to paint a picture of what we do and who is involved in making the Town of Brunswick and our surrounding community a safe and fun place to live, visit and recreate.
Our police department is comprised of thirty-five sworn police officers, eight communications officers and two non-sworn special enforcement positions for animal control and parking enforcement. An executive secretary, records keeper, C.I.D. Secretary position and a crime analyst round off the personnel roster. During the summer, we have a deputy marine resource warden to assist our full time warden.
You will read about the various disciplines that we train in, the programs that are being shared with our community and the professional abilities which these men and women have. They work hard to attain their expertise and, in most cases, hold certification in their specialized fields of law enforcement.
