about the co-op

contact

On March 01, 1979, the New Brunswick Filmmakers' Co-operative became legally incorporated. The early years brought together a group of New Brunswick filmmakers, provided them with a pool of equipment, a working space and a sense of camaraderie. It also offered basic filmmaking workshops.
When many of the pioneer filmmakers moved away, a new wave of filmmakers arrived. The Co-op's equipment resources grew to include an Eclair NPR camera, a Nagra tape recorder and a Steenbeck flat editing table.
Advanced workshops were offered with outside professionals such as: Bill MacGillivray, Don McBrearty, Jean-Pierre Lefebvre and Giles Walker.
Today the Co-op boasts a membership of 200 strong. It's equipment resource has also grown to include a Super 16 AATON XTR, a DigiDesign Pro Tools non-linear sound editing suite, Media 100, Premiere and Final Cut Pro non-linear picture editing suites as well as digital cameras and other much needed film/video additions to the equipment pool.
The Co-op is also a member of the Independent Media Arts Alliance of Canada. The Alliance represents over 90 film/video/distribution/exhibition/new media Co-ops/Centers throughout Canada.

GUIMAC HUNTING AND FISHING CAMPS
Quality Hunting and Fishing Services since 1933
Our Story...
Back in the 1920's my dad, Ralph Orser, was a young man who worked in the woods, as did most everyone in the area. Loving the outdoors as much as he did, it was only natural that he wanted to do something that would allow him to spend as much time in the woods as possible. What better way to do this than start a hunting and fishing camp for other people. In 1933 Ralph and his brother Weston opened Guimac Camps , named after the stream that it was situated on, the Becaguimac which, in the native language, means "river of big fish" . Starting out with one camp, they provided clients with guiding services in the vast and almost endless virgin forests of New Brunswick. They went through good times and bad, from dealing with people that knew as much about guns and hunting as the two brothers did about nuclear fusion, to experienced people who have hunted worldwide.
Through the years they expanded from one camp to a dozen. Back when I was "kneehigh to a grasshopper", my dad bought his brother Weston out, but Weston continued to guide and amaze clients with "tales from the past". Weston continued to guide into his early eighties and I can remember when hunters, who had never been here before, asked me who their guide was, and when I pointed to Weston, they would roll their eyes and look at the old man, stating " I hope we don't give the old geezer a heart attack". Well! Let me tell you that after the first day of trying to keep up with a man over six feet, with a huge stride, they soon learned to respect the old man and keep their comments to themselves! Weston died several years ago and I still run into people at hunting shows throughout the USA who knew him and his

S ETTLEMENT "Manan" is a corruption of MUN AN OOK or MAN AN OOK - meaning "island place" or "the island" from the Maliseet-Passamaquoddy-Penobscot Indians who visited the island from spring until fall when the treacherous waters were navigable in their canoes. Most believe that they fished, harvested dulse and birds' eggs, hunted seals, seabirds and harbour porpoises, and returned to the mainland in winter since no large game was on the island and there were few opportunities to fish or hunt marine life. The Norse are probably the first Europeans to visit Grand Manan, possibly as a headquarters while exploring both Bay of Fundy and Gulf of Maine. Other important events were as follows:
  • 1000 - Norse explorers probably visited the island. 1498 - Sebastien Cabot and 1501 - Gaspar Cortereal likely saw Grand Manan. 1504 - Breton fishermen probably fished bounteous waters around Grand Manan. 1558 - Portuguese map of North America shows cape of many islands including those of Passamaquoddy and Grand Manan. 1583 - Trading voyage to the "Bay of Menan" by Stephen Bellinger.

A History of South Brunswick Township
While the Hundred Years War was being fought between English and French kings for control of France, the 14th century inhabitants of the northeastern part of North America were living in relative tranquility with nature. The inhabitants, the Lennie Lenape Indians, a branch of the Great Algonquin Family, had migrated to New Jersey via the Ohio River Valley. The Lenape lived in semi-permanent settlements and camps along river and stream valleys, cultivating crops and hunting. Although no specific sites have as yet been authoritatively documented, the Lenape camped, hunted and traveled in and through South Brunswick. The Lennie Lenape (meaning Original People) were also known as the Delaware Indians by the later European settlers. Their population was relatively small: a 17th century estimate puts it at approximately 8,000. The lifestyle of the Lenape remained unchanged until the coming of the first European settlers in the early 1600's. The influx of Europeans began to accelerate during the 1660's and their sheer number and determination to settle and possess the land resulted in the decline and virtual disappearance of the Lenape. The differences between the Lenape and European cultures were irreconcilable, most critically in regard to land ownership. The early British Proprietor's intent, and that of the settlers, was to permanently purchase the land, and establish settlements for agriculture and trade. Instructions from the East New Jersey Proprietors to then Governor Lawrie were that "no opportunity be omitted of purchasing more land from the Indians until the Whole Province be bought from them."

Mum was not exposed to any parenting courses or magazines that gave suggestions on, "How to Raise Children" but she had some very definite ideas on the role of a parent. One of these being a nightly ritual of reading to us. I really enjoyed snuggling next to her while she read the fairy tales. I never tired of hearing about Goldy Locks and the Three Bears but the best stories were the ones she told us of her childhood. One of our favorites was the baptizing of the young turkeys by Ida and Willy. It seems I was not alone in this thirst for stories from the past that were told by relatives. Rebecca Leaman, growing up in Fredericton, found the recollections of her relatives to be every bit as fantastic and entertaining as any fairy tale. This interest has grown with her, and she finds the sharing of enthusiasms and New Brunswick history information between individuals to be quite fascinating and exciting. Furthermore, she feels that the old stories are vital to the sense of place and identity that can anchor us in this big world. From these beliefs came the idea to grow a garden of stories in the Reading Room section of her "Stonehaven Life" website at http://www.crosswinds.net/~stonehaven

New Brunswick's claim to fame? The highest tides in the world occur in the Bay of Fundy. They also have the warmest salt water beaches north of Virginia. Of course we can't forget to mention serious whale-watching either, or the parks, or Magnetic Hill. Let's just say there's a lot to see and do in New Brunswick!
This province began to have visitors in the 1600's with the arrival of Samuel de Champlain. The Bay of Fundy and St John River Valley area became known as Acadia and was home to early farmers. In 1755, more than 5,000 Acadians were forced into exile as a result of the wars between England and France. Some of them went back to France, others moved to a remote area on the Gulf of St. Lawrence, but many travelled south and ended up populating Louisiana. The New Orleans French Quarter may have gotten it's start in Canada! The Appalachian mountains dominate northern New Brunswick, sloping into a rolling plateau in the interior. The east is flat while the south remains rugged. Forest covers 85% of the province. The Miramichi River in the central-east region is famous for it's fish stories - you can even hear a few from General Norman Schwarzkopf and Chuck Yeager.

Seating Charts STATE THEATRE HISTORY The historic State Theatre is a magnificently renovated 1921 vaudeville and silent film palace that is today a premier center for the performing arts. The State Theatre offers something for everyone including: international orchestras, soulful jazz, Broadway musicals, world-class dance, stand-up comedy, nostalgic big bands, glorious opera, children's events, educational programs, world music and more. The long and colorful story of the State Theatre begins at the dawn of the roaring 20s ... On Monday afternoon at two-thirty I will have both the honor and pleasure of presenting to the citizens of the City of New Brunswick and surrounding territory what I consider the finest theatre in the State. So declared theater manager Walter Reade in a quarter-page announcement in the Daily Home News of December 20, 1921, as he proudly launched the State Theatre into the cultural life of central New Jersey. Designed by noted theater architect Thomas W. Lamb to offer both movies and live entertainment, "Reade's State Theatre" was one of the biggest, most lavish and modern theaters in the region. The opening matinee audience, who willingly paid the twenty-, thirty-, and fifty-cent admission, was treated to a live orchestra concert and a tenor rendition of "The Star Spangled Banner." The first feature presentation was the silent film White Oak, a western melodrama starring stone-faced cowboy hero William S. Hart. Also on the bill were five vaudeville acts, a newsreel and a nature film. The State was the "class act in town," with its opulent decor, splendid acoustics, and delightful mix of cinematic and live attractions.
