January 1999 Based on a recent article in the Upper
Canada Railway Society's "Rail & Transit" magazine. Use this map to follow the route of the Ocean Limited through New Brunswick. To the rail enthusiast interested in railway history, a trip through New Brunswick by VIA Rail's Ocean Limited can highlight part of New Brunswick's long association with railways. Today, a seat in one of VIA's dome observation cars provides a good vantage point for our observations. To be able to cover the full length of the province, I boarded "The Ocean" in Amherst, Nova Scotia on a bright sunny afternoon in late June (not in snow as seen in the picture!). With three prime cultures, New Brunswick has seen variations in the spelling of the many names. Therefore, be forewarned, for in general where these variations occur, I will be favouring railway names and spelling. Also, I will be skipping some of the more recent spurs, as well as most private sidings. Our departure from Amherst's interesting one and a half storey red sand-stone station was on time. As we headed out across the Chignecto Isthmus for our 10 mile journey to Sackville, New Brunswick, one has to attempt to visualize the many changes that the Amherst station has witnessed in its nearly 130 years of railway use.

http://new-brunswick.net/Saint_John/history.html
NEW BRUNSWICK LOCAL HISTORY Saint John is the largest city in New Brunswick, Canada. Located at the mouth of the Saint John River,on the Bay of Fundy.
Saint John Harbour was first entered probably in 1524 by Gomez (A Spaniard) and named Rio De La Buelta. Earlier still Basque, Breton and Norman Fisherman are to believed to have made voyages to the Bay of Fundy in the early 1500s.
History records that the French explorers Sieur de Monts and Samuel De Champlain , arrived at the mouth of what is now the St. John River on June 24, 1604, feast day of St. John the Baptist and named the River in the Saint's honour.
Portland Point, near where H.M.C.S. Brunswicker is located, is an important historic landmark on the east side of Saint John Harbour. It was here that the first permanent french settlement in that part of Acadia now known as New Brunswick was made.
Fortified by Charles La Tour, who was made Lieutenant Governor in 1631 to 1635 and engaged in trade with the natives.
It was occupied in 1758 by the British and renamed Fort Frederick . The latter was destroyed by American revolutionaries in 1775 but was replaced by Fort Howe (1777-1778), whose block house has since been reconstructed. The settlement began to develope in 1783, when the United Empire Loyalists established Parr Town and

Known as the New Brunswick Water Company, this group installed two twenty inch, cast iron water mains from lower Burnet Street to Comstock Street and Nichol Avenue and two water main control houses, constructed a 9 million-gallon reservoir, and delivered water to New Brunswick residents through a series of under ground water mains using a gravity feed system. In 1873, New Brunswick's municipal government took control of the Water Company in an effort to offer lower rates to city residents and businesses. Since then the New Brunswick Water Department has been owned and operated by the City of New Brunswick. During the 1920's, Mayor Farrington saw fit to fund the construction of the water treatment plant and more importantly, the Farrington dam. The dam secured a water source (800 million gallons) for the residents of New Brunswick. The treatment plant and the pressure filter building (constructed in 1935)for the first time enabled the City to filter and disinfect the water from this source. In 1929, New Brunswick pumped and treated approximately 6 million gallons of water a day.
