Information about New Brunswick Homeschooling Information about educational choices in NB The victory of homeschooled 13-year-old Rebecca Sealfon in the 1997 National Spelling Bee brought new attention to the growing phenomenon of homeschooling. Dissatisfied with the performance of government-run schools, more and more American families have begun teaching their children at home. Estimates of the number of homeschooled children vary widely; the best estimate is 500,000 to 750,000, but some estimates range up to 1.23 million. All observers agree that the number has grown rapidly over the past 15 years. There are two historical strains of homeschooling, a religious-right thread inspired by author Raymond Moore and a countercultural-left thread inspired by John Holt. Their differences illustrate the various concerns that cause people to choose homeschooling: some want religious values in education, some worry about the crime and lack of discipline in the government schools, some object to the conformity and bureaucracy in the schools, others are concerned with the declining quality of education, and still others just feel that children are best educated by their parents.

Changes in precipitation patterns and an increase in extreme events are also anticipated. These climate changes are expected to be the largest and most rapid of the last 10,000 years and will have profound effects on our lives and the ecosystems that support us. The air we breathe
The number of "bad air days" caused by smog is expected to increase due to a warming climate. The city of Saint John is already experiencing more smoggy days. Smog is a mix of pollutants, including nitrogen oxides (NO ) and volatile organic compounds (VOC), which react together in sunlight to form ground level ozone. This ozone is harmful to human health, causing impaired lung function, increased hospital admissions, and premature death. The very young, the elderly, and those with chronic lung diseases, such as asthma, are at the greatest risk. Bodies of water
Due to a warming trend in New Brunswick, the number of mild days in winter has been increasing and large peak flows on the St. John River in late winter are becoming more common. If this warming trend continues, ice breakup and flooding on the river will become more frequent and unpredictable. This could increase damage to property, highways, and bridges, and force power companies to change the management regimes of their reservoirs.

Today, it has been restored and returned to its former glory and is once more in use as the official residence of New Brunswick’s lieutenant-governor. With soaring ceilings and intricate mouldings in the Palladian style, Old Government House is said to be one of the best examples of Georgian architecture in Atlantic Canada. This Must-See Attraction was built between 1826-28, designed by John Woolford, the man responsible for the Old Arts Building at the University of New Brunswick and the York County Jail. This magnificent structure sits on the banks of the St. John River, once the location of the 17th-century Acadian settlement of Sainte-Anne. Nearby is an early burial ground where both Wolastoquewiyik (Maliseet) and Acadian peoples are buried. Guided tours offer visitors a glimpse of New Brunswick’s past, present and future. The building contains original furnishings and artifacts, the historic and current offices of the lieutenant-governor and interpretive displays. Take time to browse the modern art gallery and displays just for children.

What is Social Reform?
By Social Reform, we mean reforming the way that society is run, in certain aspects, within the Province of New Brunswick. It is our beleif that Government in this province, both past and present, has been too "general" in it's representation of the people. The problem lies in the fact, that New Brunswick isn't general at all. In fact we have various groups that require special attention and representation in this province such as the female population, senior citizens, and youth. A Social Reform Party Government in New Brunswick, would create additional departments and Ministries specifically for these groups.
What is the major aim(s) of the Social Reform Party of New Brunswick?

New Brunswick invests over $7M annually in initiatives that support the goals of the NCB. These include: Day Care Assistance Program - Increased subsidy rates and increased number of subsidies available. Alternative Child Care Program provides a day care subsidy to families who are not eligible for basic financial assistance and who do not have reasonable access to licensed child care facilities. Healthy Minds Nutritional Partnership - During the 1999-2000 school year, the New Brunswick government piloted a Healthy Minds breakfast program in two school districts as one of the province's NCB initiatives. The pilot attempted to address the nutritional needs of students from kindergarten to grade 5 in a non-stigmatizing way. More than 2,000 children had access to breakfast foods on an as-needed basis. Participating school received a per student subsidy, assuming that 20% of students would participate. In addition, schools received $500 to assist with program-related costs and further funding for equipment. The evaluation of the pilot was extremely positive. One of the key findings was that schools wanted more flexibility and autonomy in their delivery of a school nutrition program. In response, the New Brunswick government allowed districts to determine the extent of the program they offer (e.g., emergency cupboard, breakfast, snack or lunch) when it expanded the program to all areas of the province during the 2000-01 school year. Renamed the Healthy Minds Nutritional Partnership, the program will benefit up to 7,276 students across the province.
