New Brunswick community says government's pig farm decision 'stinks'
Last Updated Fri, 08 Mar 2002 17:16:49 STE.-MARIE-DE-KENT, N.B. - The New Brunswick government has decided not to move the province's most controversial pig farm. Instead the province will funnel money into odour-control technology for the farm.
The people in Sainte-Marie-de-Kent say they're sickened by the decision. Maria Robichaud is shocked that the government is letting the giant hog farm stay. "I'm in mourning. That's the only way I can express it. " It's the end of a three year battle. Since the farm moved into the riverside community with its 10,000 pigs, residents have been appealing to government for help. Guy Leblanc says breathing problems are more common in the village. So are for sale signs on the lawns. "They're moving away because they can't live here no more. The smell in the summertime, you can't put clothes out because it stinks." But the government says that should change within the next few years. It has a deal worked out with the farm to bring in equipment to control the smell.

Government in New Brunswick Who is the Premier?
Bernard Lord
Premier, President of the Executive Council, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, Minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation, Minister responsible for eNB and Minister responsible for the Youth Council of New Brunswick.
As New Brunswick's 30th premier, Bernard Lord has a vision of a prosperous province that offers New Brunswickers more opportunities by changing the way in which government works. It is a vision that embraces who we are as a province, builds on our strengths, and allows New Brunswick to reach its full potential as a competitive, compassionate province. On June 7, 1999, Bernard Lord led his party to the greatest Progressive Conservative victory in New Brunswick history, sweeping 44 of the province's 55 seats and becoming, at the age of 33, the province's youngest elected premier. Barely two years later, he led his party to victory in three by-elections, increasing his party's seats to 47. Since the general election, Bernard Lord has led a government focused on the following priorities: changing the way government works, renewing health care, building new job opportunities, investing in education, managing smarter, and lowering taxes.

10 FEBRUARY 2004 UNITED STEELWORKERS DEFEND WORKERS’ RIGHTS AGAINST NEW BRUNSWICK GOVERNMENT ATTACKS TORONTO - The Conservative government of New Brunswick should back off its agenda of limiting free collective bargaining and attacking public services in the province, says the United Steelworkers’ Atlantic/Ontario director, Wayne Fraser. The Steelworkers’ union is part of a Coalition of Unions seeking to put pressure on the government of Bernard Lord to stop aiding the erosion of workers' rights. “Our union’s members in New Brunswick have suffered a great deal over the last several years at the hands of employers and governments,” Fraser said. “Steelworker members doing seasonal work in Northern New Brunswick’s fish plants have had to resort to welfare because they don’t qualify for (un)employment insurance. If public services are cut further in the province, they will be even more disadvantaged. Fraser also pointed to Noranda-owned Brunswick Mining and Smelting, where Steelworkers are bracing for a closure of the mine.

Jarig Bakker - 27 June 1999 I'm the one who sent a 1:2 flag, and yes, the flag of New Brunswick is not a 1:2 flag; I've always heard 2:3, so I'll have to look into this. However, the flag is 1:2 because the Canadian government has this policy that all flags flown side-by-side with the Canadian flag must be of a ratio of 1:2. Hence, flags like Quebec's fleur-de-lys or the flags of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, etc. are all "stretched" to fit this policy. Since the flag was bought here in Burlington, Ontario, it would seem unlikely that the flag would be flown without the Canadian flag nearby. Hence, all the flags sold at this store are of a 1:2 ratiuo, to fit with Canadian policy, including the French and British flags I'd bought a while back.

ConsumerInfo on Auto Insurance Select Committee on Public Auto Insurance recommends spending $82 million to drive private investment out of New Brunswick: Dominion of Canada General Insurance TORONTO, April 2, 2004 - The Select Committee on Public Auto Insurance released its report today, recommending that the government of New Brunswick implement a government run automobile insurance plan. According to the report, this initiative will provide rate relief and stability for the province's insurance consumers. "This is nonsense," said George Cooke, President and Chief Executive Officer of The Dominion of Canada General Insurance Company. "The changes proposed come with a significant cost: substantially reduced benefits, denial of the right to sue for personal injury, higher prices for young females and older drivers and reduced private sector investment in New Brunswick."

N.B. BEGINS CRACKDOWN ON NATIVE LOGGERS SOME ABORIGINAL LEADERS THREATEN
CONFRONTATION...
The New Brunswick government took the first step yesterday in a controversial
crackdown on native logging of Crown land. Officers from the Department of
Natural Resources seized five trucks loaded with logs taken from Crown land as part of an enforcement effort that some native leaders say will lead to confrontations in the woods. Since the New Brunswick Court of Appeal ruled last month that native loggers did not have an inherent right to cut lumber on Crown land, the government has said it would begin enforcement efforts only if the natives refused to negotiate and continued to cut timber. Yesterday's move, which departmental spokesman Doug Tyler said took place without confrontations, occurred after the number of native logging sites grew

Public Participation in Canada:
Development, Current Status and Trends
New Brunswick
As in Saskatchewan and Manitoba, public participation in planning and decision-making is established provincial policy. Most consultation in New Brunswick is project-related, but the provincial government is trying to get more participation in policy development and decision-making. A federal Member of Parliament (M.P.) is seeking public input to policy and program development through monthly "People's Forums," described below. On specific issues, there seems to be less involvement in energy and forestry but more in waste management, education and health. For example, the province requires consultation on educational issues. One observer suggests, however, that more public involvement is needed in implementation, not just in planning. While the New Brunswick government is doing more public involvement, especially in education and health, the public is footing the bill through such techniques as 900 telephone numbers, which require the caller to pay to participate. The present government has had some 85 consultations on a wide range of topics during the last six years under the rubric of "governing cooperatively." However, observers note that public involvement sometimes takes the form of "letting people know about a plan already formulated and learning how they react to it." In New Brunswick, the public sector is more in the spotlight and thus tends to do more public involvement than the private sector, which reportedly does what it has to. Civil servants are judged on how well they use public involvement and are audited regularly. Others see the private sector taking a more visible role than in the past and note that tighter budgets lead to a focus on stakeholders. Another practitioner suggests that the differences between the public and private sectors are based more on the experience and attitudes of project managers than on the sector in which they work.

The New Brunswick government began its formal civil registration of births, marriages and deaths in 1888 following the passage of an Act in 1887. It is important to note that the government's official registers include delayed registrations of births which date back as early as 1801.
HISTORIC RECORDS
As of August 2001, The Provincial Archives of New Brunswick holds civil registration records for the following periods:
BIRTHS: 1888-1905 (generally open after 95 years)
MARRIAGES: 1888-1950 (generally open after 50 years) DEATHS: 1888-1950 (once transferred and processed, open after 50 years) The Archives also holds some county registers and church records prior to 1888. New Brunswick Tories cave in to insurance industry Trade obligations sited as reason for favouring companies over people
Fredericton - The insurance industry is the big winner in auto insurance changes announced by the province's Tory government, says the New Brunswick Public Employees Association (NBPEA/NUPGE).
The industry won its battle to have a cap placed on personal injury claims from non-permanent injuries. Existing rates will remain in place and planned increases of nearly 50% in some cases will go ahead as scheduled.
“Clearly NBPEA members and all New Brunswick consumers are the losers,” says executive director Tom Mann.
“We are very disappointed that the government has decided to completely reject the notion of publicly-funded, no-fault insurance. It’s clear how (Justice Minister Brad) Green views consumer’s needs – they take second place to the needs of the insurance industry.
"The Minister of Justice said no-fault insurance would have a negative impact on the insurance business throughout the province. He also said the government would be keeping a close eye on the relationship between benefits and rates. Does this mean he’s prepared to further reduce benefits for the consumer?” Mann asked.

Consumers' Association Challenges New Brunswick Government's Position On Auto Insurance OTTAWA, July 31 /CNW/ - The Consumers' Association of Canada today
challenged New Brunswick's Minister of Justice, the Hon. Brad Green to provide
the real story to the people of New Brunswick on auto insurance rates. "The
Consumers' Association study released last Monday, which concluded that New
Brunswick consumers pay exorbitant auto insurance rates compared to provinces with public auto systems, is based on over 1,500 rate quotes from the province of New Brunswick alone", said Mel Fruitman, President of the Consumers Association of Canada.
"The Minister has publicly stated that he believes the figures in the
Association's report are wrong", said Bruce Cran, National Secretary of the
Association. "This just shows how ill informed he is. If the Minister had
taken the time to get at the truth and ask us, we would have told him that all
