New Age
B is for BARDO
BARDO is the Tibetan word for the place where we go after death and before rebirth (See REINCARNATION ). Catholics call this place Purgatory. It is a kind of Cosmic Waiting Room where souls hang out before their next assignment to a new physical body. Some people claim the Bardo is boring because there is nothing to do except be with yourself. Others say it is terrifying because there is nothing to do except be with yourself. They all agree it's not a lot of fun. The only cure is to get enlightened (See ENLIGHTENMENT ) which evidently makes the Bardo easy to put up with. This, unfortunately, requires spiritual work in this lifetime, which is awfully inconvenient when there's so much good stuff on television. Of course all this weird, bizarre talk about the Bardo is probably total nonsense and we don't have to worry about it a bit. We hope.
B is for BERMUDA TRIANGLE
The BERMUDA TRIANGLE is a place in the Atlantic Ocean where things disappear a lot. Big things like boats and airplane squadrons. Little things like people. Some people think the Bermuda Triangle is where Atlantis used to be. They say an old Atlantean laser beam occasionally zaps things into oblivion. Others say it's an underwater UFO airport and that the UFO people like to collect visitors. Still others t hink it's a hole in reality that occasionally opens up so that things fall through into another universe.

NEW "PRIDE AND PREJUDICE" IN PRODUCTION
British actress Keira Knightley has agreed to play Elizabeth Bennet in an upcoming adaptation of "Pride and Prejudice." The deal makes the nineteen year old thespian one of Britain's highest paid actresses, second only to Catherine Zeta Jones. The movie, which will be the first big screen adaptation of the Jane Austen novel since 1940, will be produced by Working Title Films, which produced romantic comedies such as "Love Actually", "Four Weddings and a Funeral" and "Bridget Jones' Diary" (a modern day adaptation of "Pride and Prejudice"). Working Title said of Knightley: "She is quite young, wonderfully handsome, extremely agreeable, and, to crown the whole, she means to join our cast." Shooting for the period romance begins in August. The role of Mr. Darcy has not been cast yet. Knightley can be currently seen in another period movie, "King Arthur," set in the Dark Ages.

Also known as the Medieval Period and the Dark Ages, The Middle Ages began around 500 A.D. and lasted for about 1000 years. Of Kings and Vikings The Magna Carta Knights Heraldry ... Oak View Elementary The Middle Ages were mostly about the development of life in Europe. It's geography was good for many settlers. Take a look at our map, which includes our description of the geography of Europe! During the Middle Ages, most people lived a harsh life. They lived in war from the Viking attacks that killed many people during the beginning of the Middle Ages to the Crusades , a series of religious wars. They used many interesting weapons Many soldiers and knights died during the Middle Ages. A lot of people died from bad water and diseases like smallpox, too. After the Vikings attacked, people couldn't feel safe without a guard, so a new type of governing society was used, called feudalism . Under this sytem, the nobles had a great and luxurious life. The serfs had a rough life, working in the fields and not being free. In return though, they were protected from the Vikings by their lord. The lives of the kings, queens and nobles were very different from the serfs and peasants. They even ate different food The people were very religious and they were very strict with their religion . Europeans were mostly Christian, although there were mythical characters like dragons and unicorns. People often gave up riches to the church, which made the churches wealthy and powerful. The churches also had a big influence on

Discipline of the Secret
(Latin Disciplina Arcani ; German Arcandisciplin A theological term used to express the custom which prevailed in the earliest ages of the Church , by which the knowledge of the more intimate mysteries of the Christian religion was carefully kept from the heathen and even from those who were undergoing instruction Protestant and the Catholic side. The origin of the custom must be looked for in the recorded words of Christ: "Give not that which holy to dogs; neither cast your pearls before swine; lest perhaps they trample them under their feet, and turning upon you, they tear you" (Matt., vii, 6), while the practice in Apostolic times is sufficiently vouched for by St. Paul's assurance that he fed the Corinthians "as . . . little ones in Christ", giving them "milk to drink, not meat", because they were not yet able to bear it (I Cor., iii, 1-2). With this passage we may compare also Heb., v. 12-14, where the same illustration is used, and it is declared that "solid food is for the perfect; for them who by custom have their senses exercised to the discerning of good and evil." Although the origin of the custom is thus to be traced back to the very beginnings of Christianity , it does not appear to have been so general, or to have been carried out with so much strictness in the earlier centuries as it was immediately after the persecutions had ceased. This may be due in part to the absence of detailed information with regard to the earlier period, but it is probable enough that the discipline was growing more strict all through the second and third centuries on account of the pressure of persecution, and that, when persecution was at last relaxed, the need for reserve was felt at first, while the Church was still surrounded by hostile Paganism, to be increased rather than diminished. After the fifth or sixth century, when

The Medieval Studies Program provides an interdisciplinary context for students who wish to study the European Middle Ages. Students normally concentrate on one of four fields:
  • art history and archaeology history or language and literature
They are also expected to do course work in the other fields. In certain cases the program may also provide a framework for students wishing to cross the somewhat arbitrary temporal, topical, and geographical boundaries of medieval studies in order to consider such problems as relationship between classical and medieval literature or art or the broader history of the preindustrial European studies. send questions to: dsierpinski@wesleyan.edu Above image is from a photograph of the tile floor in the Abbot's Parlor (Abbey of Saint-Jean-des-Vignes, Soissons)
