ocated in Charlestown, the museum interprets the History and Culture of Nevis and the life of Alexander Hamilton, first Secretary of the United States Treasury. T he Island of Nevis formed in a series of volcanic eruptions over a period of approximately 3 1/2 million years, however, it has been .98 million years since the last eruption. Despite this the Island is still volcanically active as evidenced at Bath Spring and several near shore underwater sites. A rchaeological excavations reveal that the first inhabitants came to Nevis about 4,000 years ago. These people relied heavily on the sea and traveled between islands in boats crafted from huge trees. The Museum features artifacts left from these first indigenous people who were followed by civilizations of people who left a series of ceramic styles. S ome issues of conservation concern have been incorporated into the exhibitions at the Museum of Nevis History. These are soil and forest conservation, conservation of the wetlands and sea. Wetland areas at Gallows Bay, Pinneys Pond, Nelson Spring and Newcastle Bay play an important role in protecting land and sea. Coastal wetlands protect land from swells and absorb silt and other pollutants that damage the sea; properly managed they can be tourist attractions. The sea regulates land temperature, provides recreation and seafood as well as an avenue for transportation. Now, the sea is endangered from human activities.

Nevis Where to Stay Nevis Tourism Authority Windstar Cruises Star Clippers Cruises Vacation Rentals Guide ... Other Caribbean destinations In the days when sugar was the engine that drove the economy of the West Indies, Nevis was known as the "Queen of the Caribbees. " That was a tribute in part to the island's natural beauty, and also to the glittering social life in the plantation houses – a time epitomized by the courtship of a dashing young British naval officer, Horatio Nelson, and his soon-to-be-bride, Fanny Nisbet. What's remarkable about Nevis is that it has lost neither its natural heritage nor its sense of history. Field Notes BEACHES A pinney for your thoughts…and sand. Pinney's Beach, miles of sugar-soft white sand lined by coconut palms is Nevis's finest. The shallow, calm water is just right for swimming, and while you'll have no problem finding an uncrowded stretch all to yourself, you can also meander down to a restaurant or beach shack for a midday snack. SIGHTSEEING If Alexander Hamilton seems like an old friend (he's on the U.S. $10 bill, after all), you can pay homage at his birthplace on the waterfront in Charlestown. The Georgian-style house is actually a replica (the original, built in 1680, was hammered by a hurricane in the 19th century), and it now houses the small but interesting Museum of Nevis History. For a look at another great figure from the past, visit the Horatio Nelson Museum south of Charlestown; exhibits include paintings and furniture from the admiral's flagship.

Federation. In 1967, St. Kitts and Nevis along with Anguilla became a governing state with Great Britain. In that same year, Anguilla seceded from the Federation.
In 1983, St. Kitts and Nevis achieved full political independence. Consequently, the Federation ceased being an Associated State and attained the status of a Sovereign and Democratic Federal State, which is an independent participant of the British Commonwealth. Under this sovereign status, Nevis has adopted the British Parliamentary System of government. It has its own unicameral legislature and government that has the authority to formulate its own economic decisions. The Federation has its own representation at the United Nations.
POLITICAL STABILITY
Since attaining independence in 1983, the Federation has had a history of political stability based upon the Westminster model of government and continuity of national policy. The Federation has also been consistently adjudged to be among the world’s

Early Settlers.
The first inhabitants of the islands were pre-ceramic people called Sibonay. They are believed to have arrived about 2,100 years ago from Central America. The next people to colonise the islands were the Arawak who originated from the Orinoco River area in modern day Venezuela. They in turn were followed by the Caribs, again from South America. The Arawaks and Caribs left far more remains than the Sibonay and there are many archaeological sites scattered around the islands. These sites are marked with piles of shells, pieces of pottery, and old flint tools and some rock drawings on St. Kitts. St. Kitts was called Liamuiga , or "fertile land," by Caribs which was a reference to the island's rich and productive volcanic soil. Since 1983 the main mountain peak, a 3,792-foot extinct volcano, is called Mount Laimuiga. Nevis was called Oualie - pronounced "OO-A-LEE" - by the Caribs.

History
St Kitts, settled by Sir Thomas Warner in 1623, was the site of the first British colony in the West Indies. The following year the French also settled part of St Kitts, a situation Warner tolerated in part to gain an upper hand against the native Caribs living on the island. After they massacred the Caribs in a series of battles, the British and French turned on each other and St Kitts changed hands between the two several times before the 1783 Treaty of Paris brought the island firmly under British control. Sugar plantations thrived on St Kitts during this era. Nevis has a similar history. In 1628 Sir Warner sent a party of about 100 colonists to establish a British settlement on the western coast. Although their original settlement, near Cotton Ground, was destroyed in an earthquake in 1680, Nevis went on to prosper, developing one of the most affluent plantation societies in the Eastern Caribbean. As on St Kitts, most of the island's wealth was built upon the labor of African slaves toiling in the island's sugar cane fields. The local tourist industry got its start in the late 18th century on Nevis, where thermal baths made it a popular retreat for Britain's elite. In 1816, the British linked St Kitts and Nevis with Anguilla and the Virgin Islands as a single colony. In 1958 these islands became part of the West Indies Federation, a grand but unsuccessful attempt to combine all of Britain's Caribbean colonies into a united political entity. When the federation dissolved in 1962, the British opted to lump St Kitts, Nevis and Anguilla together as a new state.

Because of its many salt ponds, Amerindians called the island Sint Maarten shares with St Martin 'Soualiga,' meaning 'Land of Salt.' According to popular belief, Columbus 'discovered' the island in November 1493 and named it in honor of Bishop St Martin of Tours. However, some historians now think the island Columbus chanced upon that day was the more southerly Nevis and that he never actually sighted St Martin. At any rate, it wasn't until 1631 that the first colonization attempts were made, with the Dutch settling at Little Bay and the French in the Orleans area. In 1633 the Spanish (who had claimed but not colonized the island) invaded the island, deporting all 128 inhabitants. The Spanish reinforced a fort that the Dutch had started and then built a second fort. In 1644 an attempt to retake the island was led by the renowned Dutch colonizer Peter Stuyvesant, who lost a leg to a cannonball in the fighting. Although the Dutch assault was unsuccessful, four years later the Spanish reassessed their interests in the region and simply left on their own. Both the Dutch and French hastily moved back and agreed to share the island, signing a partition agreement in 1648 that was to be repeatedly violated. During the period from 1670 to 1702 the French controlled the entire island. In 1703 the Dutch invaded from St Eustatius and then deported any French settlers who refused to leave.
