State gives least to Nevada schools
By Emily Richmond
emily@vegas.com

LAS VEGAS SUN When it comes to the percentage of education funding its public schools receive from the state, Nevada ranks last in the nation, according to a new report released Wednesday by the country's largest teachers' union. At the same time, Nevada has the nation's second-highest percentage of K-12 funding from local governments 66 percent well above the national average of 43 percent, the National Education Association reports. Nevada schools received just 28.5 percent of their funding from state government in the 2001-02 academic year, compared with the national average of 50 percent. Hawaii ranked first with just under 89 percent. Walt Rulffes, deputy superintendent of operations for the Clark County School District, said this morning that the issue isn't where the money comes from but the amount. "We cannot educate our children properly without the dollars to back up the initiatives," Rulffes said. "It's that simple." After cutting $90 million in the last two years, the Clark County School Board approved a slimmed-down $1.4 billion operating budget Wednesday night but hedged that with a back-up plan that would cut $111 million if proposed revenue does not come in.

Education
Teacher Education Blamed for Public Schools' Decline by Carol Innerst Mischievous speculation? No. It happens, as a result of an historically flawed system in America of educating mostly average or below-average students to be public school teachers. As evidence continues to pile up that American children are not learning the basics in school, critics are quick to blame the youngsters, their parents, the schools, television or the curriculum. But increasingly, the focus has shifted to the teacher, the most vital link in the education process. Now, a four-month study at teachers colleges by The Washington Times indicates that the problem of unsatisfactory classroom learning is rooted in the early selection and education of students who say they want to be teachers. These students then are being taught by professors who differ wildly on what teachers need to know. "Schools of education are cash cows to universities," says Dean Edwin J. Delattre of the Boston University School of Education. "They admit and graduate students who have low levels of intellectual accomplishment, and these people are in turn visited on schoolchildren. They are well-intentioned, decent, nice people who by and large don’t know what they’re doing." Mr. Delattre is one of the harshest critics of schools of education.

Preparing for professional training
Professional schools also want evidence of breadth of knowledge, intellectual curiosity, adaptability to a variety of environments, and mastery of some subject in depth. Your field of specialization is much less important than your ability to accomplish mastery; dedication and genuine interest are keys to success in the intense professional training that follows the bachelor’s degree. Where better to develop these skills than a liberal arts and sciences college, where you will encounter a variety of disciplinary perspectives through general education courses, as well as study one subject in depth through the major? The foundations laid through a liberal arts degree are, in fact, just what the doctor ordered!
Preparing for life
Still questioning whether a liberal arts education is for you? Consider this: Liberal arts colleges are in the business of educating people, not training them. Some of the most important things we teach are the intangibles—not a collection of facts or skills, but habits of mind such as how to think critically about complex issues and how to identify, define, and solve problems. A liberal arts education prepares you not so much for a specific career as for the ability to make your way in a complex and constantly changing world. Medicine reflects today’s multidimensional and rapidly changing world. As a health professional, you will need to continually upgrade your knowledge. You will constantly evaluate the risks and benefits of new therapies for your patients, and will routinely encounter problems that require careful and logical analysis to diagnose accurately. The intellectual skills you need are the essence of a liberal arts and sciences education. The specific techniques for your chosen profession are what you acquire in your graduate-level training.

Description of Project
Nevada State Library and Archives was charged with the responsibility of obtaining quality periodical databases for the libraries in Nevada. The procurement was designed to establish Price Agreement(s) for two years. The databases desired were computerized, web-accessible databases of full text educational database periodicals to be used statewide in school, academic, special and public libraries and through remote access from home. Vendors were asked to indicate costs for the educationally based full text general interest periodical products they offer and encouraged to include pricing for all offered products for individual site purchase in the event they were not the selected vendor for the statewide databases. The listed costs are incorporated into this Price Agreement are considered to be fixed cost bids for the products. Funding Funding for the purchase of the statewide general periodical databases comes from two government sources:
Federal Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) funding from the Institute of Museums and Library Services (IMLS) is providing $350,000 per year. LSTA funds promote access to learning and information resources of all types of libraries for individuals of all ages. IMLS provides funds to State Library Agencies using a population-based formula. State Libraries may use the appropriation to support statewide initiatives and services for public, academic, research, school, and special libraries in their state.

General Information
College students who want to go on to schools in the health professions (medicine, dentistry, physical therapy, optometry, etc.) can do so through almost any major. The trick is to add the right electives that meet the specific course requirements of the schools to which you, the student, will apply. You don't need to take a science-based major—even English majors, philosophy majors, and history majors can compete with the more traditional "pre-health profession" majors if they plan their college career with that goal in mind. The less science required in your major, the more science you will need to add as electives. Even though all majors have a certain number of elective credits, if your major is not a straight science major (biology, etc.) that often means you will need more than the minimum number of courses during your undergraduate years (the minimum at UNR is usually 128 semester credits for graduation). That shouldn't deter you, but it does mean you should plan well.
