Suicide in the United States
The Problem
  • Suicide took the lives of 29,350 Americans in 2000.
More people die from suicide than from homicide. In 2000, there were 1.7 times as many suicides as homicides.
Overall, suicide is the 11th leading cause of death for all Americans, and is the third leading cause of death for young people aged 15-24.
Males are more than four times more likely to die from suicide than are females. However, females are more likely to attempt suicide than are males. 1999, white males accounted for 72% of all suicides. Together, white males and white females accounted for over 90% of all suicides. However, during the period from 1979-1992, suicide rates for Native Americans (a category that includes American Indians and Alaska Natives) were about 1.5 times the national rates. There was a disproportionate number of suicides among young male Native Americans during this period, as males 15-24 accounted for 64% of all suicides by Native Americans. Suicide rates are generally higher than the national average in the western states and lower in the eastern and midwestern states.

Multiage Community Nevada, IA Community Schools This page provides those interested in multiage education with information about
the organization and activities of our Multiage program. The Multiage Classroom: An Educational Choice
  • The Nevada Multiage Community is a program choice within the larger Central Elementary. The approximatately 130 students of the Multiage Community are part of the 520 students enrolled in Nevada's Central Elementary. Each year parents are given the opportunity to choose to enroll their child in the Graded Community or the Multiage Community.
  • Teachers and Students
  • The Nevada Multiage Community has seven classroom teachers, two resource teachers, a reading teacher, and guidance counselor assigned to the program. These teachers plan the instruction for the multiage students using a year long theme as an organizer. Efforts are made to coordinate the curriculum for the year with the art teacher, media specialist, and music teachers. Our students range in age from 6 to 11 years old. They are organized into classes of 17-20 students ages 6 to 9 years old and 8 to 11 years old.

  • Literacy Instruction
  • Literacy instruction is a primary goal of Nevada's Multiage Program. The students are immersed in reading, writing, listening, speaking, and spelling from the first day of classes. A wide variety of books are available in the classroom for students to read. These are in addition to the materials available in the school's Library/Media Center. Phonemic awareness and letter-sound correspondence (phonics) is taught and practiced during both the reading and writing times of the day.

and masters emphasis for preparation of school library media specialists, K12 Library media. Programs in South Dakota and nevada are accredited by NCATE
    http://www.bate.montana.edu/about.html
What is BATE? The BATE project is one of eleven national demonstration projects funded by the U.S. Department of Education FIPSE LAAP program for 2000-2004. We are addressing the needs of rural educators to obtain added certification in two areas experiencing personnel shortages: K-12 school library media and school administration. Three states are working collaboratively to place core certification courses online for the two content areas. Teachers who want to obtain certification credentials must select an institution and fulfill its requirements. We have agreed to accept each other's courses on transfer. The institutions are: Montana State University-Bozeman University of Nevada-Las Vegas (educational leadership certification and advanced degrees; library media certification), and the University of South Dakota (school administration certification and advanced degrees. Project Objectives: To create economies of scale through developing and executing an inter and intra state collaborative plan to provide distance learning opportunities for educators to obtain credentials in library media and school administration thus reducing duplication efforts and to expand opportunities for programming and k-12 staff development where few currently exist To package the courses and programs so as to make it attractive for students to complete requirements in a timely manner anytime, anyplace
