Our district is now the sixth largest school district in the county as it serves the population of Las Vegas and surrounding communities. Homework Policy
Board Policy Policy Administrative Regulation AR 6154
Adopted: February 27, 2001 It shall be the policy of the Nevada City School District to consider homework as an integral part of the student's total school program.  Teachers at all levels are encouraged to require home study.
Definition
The purpose of homework is to increase the educational opportunities of students by providing additional learning time after the regular school day for reinforcing, extending and enriching instruction.
Philosophy
A successful homework policy requires close cooperation between the teacher, parent and child.  A gradual introduction from the onset of a pupil's educational experience will provide continuity for good study habits; foster independence, responsibility and self direction; and deepen skills and knowledge.  The school district recognizes that children need free time each day independent of school assignments and responsibilities, in order to pursue activities and responsibilities of importance to the child and parents. Homework is most successful when the child takes pride in his/her work and the parent provides favorable environment, assistance, and supervision.

Statewide Masterplan for Nevada Libraries 2000-2005
Introduction The Statewide Masterplan for Nevada Libraries provides direction and serves as a blueprint for development of library services throughout the state. The plan is based on input from people who attended meetings in every corner of Nevada and also reflects the best thinking of public, school, academic and special librarians. The developing draft was reviewed and discussed at regional meetings in Elko, Las Vegas, Reno and Carson City. The planning process incorporated ideas gleaned from efforts in states with characteristics similar to Nevada on the variables of population, population density and revenue. A planning background document was developed by Elko County Librarian Sara Jones as part of an internship toward her graduate degree from Syracuse University School of Information Studies. Using the above variables, Sara developed summaries and evaluations of planning documents from Idaho, Nebraska, New Mexico and Utah. Sara also reviewed the 1996-2000 Statewide Masterplan for Nevada Libraries to determine which objectives had been met and which activities had been completed. This work demonstrates the overall effectiveness of the plan in terms of impact on library services in Nevada.

    Frequently Asked Internet Questions
June 1998 In response to numerous questions on the specifics of filtering issues, the ALA Intellectual Freedom Committee has developed the following questions-and-answers document to provide guidance to librarians on these and related matters. This document is by no means comprehensive, and the Committee anticipates adding to it on a regular basis. Internet Questions
  • Is filtering okay in the children's room? Is it okay to filter in the children's room if children are permitted access to unfiltered computers outside of the children's room? This is the most frequently asked question public libraries are facing in 1998. It appears that those public libraries that are doing five things simultaneously are meeting the most success in providing Internet access to children in children's rooms. They are 1) developing a broad Internet use policy that is part of rather than separate from overall library use policies; 2) educating the entire public regarding the Internet policy and regarding use of the Internet itself; 3) providing unfiltered Internet access in the children's room; 4) strongly encouraging parents to guide their children's use of the Internet in libraries; and 5) providing professional advice in the area of Web site selection to obtain information.

Background The NSLP was established in 1946 with the goal of reducing malnutrition caused by a shortage of food. The program now operates in nearly 100,000 schools and residential childcare institutions and serves almost 27 million lunches a day. Schools participating in the NSLP receive cash subsidies, donated commodities, and free bonus shipments for each meal served. In return, they must serve lunches that meet federal nutrition requirements, as well as offer free or reduced-price lunches to eligible children. In response to these serious health concerns, PCRM, a nonprofit organization that promotes preventive medicine through healthy nutrition, has encouraged lawmakers, the USDA, and school districts to achieve the PCRM Healthy School Lunch Campaign goal of assuring that foods served at school promote the health of all children.
