About the Supreme Court Law Library
Main Law Library Website Law Library Catalog The Nevada Supreme Court Library, with over 100,000 volumes, is one of the largest law libraries in the state. The collection was established to support the federal district court judges of the Territorial Supreme Court and, upon Nevada's gaining statehood in 1865, became part of the State Library. It was transferred to the judicial branch in 1973. The library serves the Supreme Court, the Legislature, the Office of the Attorney General and other executive branch agencies, as well as the local bar and the general public. The library provides up-to-date legal materials in all formats, including print, CD-ROM and on-line. The collection emphasizes primary legal resources (statutes, cases and regulations of state and federal government) and provides secondary legal materials geared towards the general practitioner. In addition to United States law, the library maintains a collection of English common law materials dating back to the Magna Carta. Other specialties are Indian law and Nevada law. The library subscribes to WESTLAW, LEXIS/NEXIS (government use only) and Shepard's Online. You may borrow from the collection using interlibrary loan through your local public or college library. Hours and Location The library hours are Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. We are not open to the public on the weekends. The library is located on the first floor of the Nevada Supreme Court Building at 201 S. Carson Street, Carson City. Public parking can be found in the lot behind the library on Stewart Street, between 5th and Musser, or in the parking garage to the south of the building on Stewart.

Based on best practices exemplified by the Denver Public Library, and incorporating the CONTENTdm digital content management software system, "Early Las Vegas" is divided into six photographic galleries: The Cottages, The Depot, Early Las Vegas, Fremont Street, Hoover Dam, and Night Club Las Vegas. Each of these galleries is designed to simulate an actual gallery experience by having the user move horizontally through the exhibit. Each item in the gallery has been cataloged in CONTENTdm in the Dublin Core (DC) metadata standard.
Suitable commentary and research related to the photographs, and the video and audio clips, is included in each exhibit.

    73. Why Did Nevada Become A State? By Guy Rocha

Why Did Nevada Become A State? by
    Guy Rocha
    Nevada State Archivist
Who hasn't heard ad nauseam that our state was admitted to the Union on October 31, 1864 because its silver and gold production were needed to help finance the Civil War. Anyone who has attended Nevada's schools has heard the story from a teacher or read it in a textbook. It's a wonderful tale, but nothing could be farther from the truth. Our state's history has too often been embellished and transposed into myth, and the claim of Nevada's mineral wealth triggering statehood ranks as one of the most pervasive fictional stories in the annuals of the Silver State. The reasons for Nevada's statehood were political, not economic. Earlier writers were so caught up in romanticizing Nevada's role in the Civil War they decided to re-invent history.
FACT: Nevada Territory was a federal territory, a part of the Union, and President Abraham Lincoln appointed Governor James Warren Nye, a former Police Commissioner in New York City, to ensure that it stayed that way. Governor Nye put down any demonstration in support of the Confederacy, and there were some. The federal government bought much of Nevada's silver and gold bullion to support its currency. What federal taxes there were at the time that could be effectively collected went into Union coffers. Therefore, Nevada's creation as a TERRITORY on March 2, 1861 by the United States Congress ensured that its riches would help the Union and not the Confederate cause.
