Western Historic RADIO MUSEUM Nevada Radio History 1906 to 1930 A History of Commercial Broadcasting and Amateur Radio Operation in the State of Nevada By: Henry Rogers Nevada Radio Amateur W6PST, Rudy Malo from Minden, Nevada, ca. 1940 Using Photos or Text from this webpage: Early Radio Operation in Nevada The first radio transmissions within the state of Nevada were probably associated with Arthur Raycraft 's radio (spark gap) telegraph communications system between Tonopah, Nevada and the nearby mining camps. Raycraft was Tonopah's first banker and his house, "The Castle House", was supposedly part of the communications link. The house was built in 1906 and the radio telegraph system would most likely date from between 1906 and 1909. It is not known exactly what type of equipment was used, although some "land line" type equipment is still existing in the house. This would lead one to believe that the receiving system used coherer detectors and that would date the system to no later than 1909. Since no other spark communications systems between the mining camps were installed around Nevada or elsewhere, one can assume that early radio telegraph was not really successful in providing the communications link necessary. This is what a typical wireless station would have looked like around 1908. The apparatus at that time was capable of sending and receiving either International Morse Code or Land-line Morse. This may explain why the equipment that has survived in the Castle House appears to be for Land-line telegraph.

Las Vegas is a relatively young town but its history can be traced all the way back to 1829, when Antonio Armijo lead a party of 60 on the Old Spanish Trail to Los Angeles. While the caravan camped about 100 miles northeast of the present site of Las Vegas, a scouting party set out to look for water. Rafael Rivera, a young Mexican scout who left the main party and headed due west over the unexplored desert, discovered an oasis. The abundance of artesian spring water he found here shortened the Spanish trail to Los Angeles by allowing travelers to cut directly through rather than around, the vast desert. Spanish traders who used this route were thankful for the shortened trip and they named this convenient desert oasis Las Vegas Spanish for "the Meadows". John C. Fremont was the next visitor to the Las Vegas Springs. In 1844 he led one of his many explorations to the Far West. He is still remembered today and his name graces one of the most spectacular streets in Las Vegas, Fremont Street, located downtown. Ten years later Mormon settlers were sent by BrighamYoung from Salt Lake City to colonize the valley. They built a 150 square foot adobe brick fort, part of which still stands today as the oldest structure in Las Vegas and is appropriately named the Mormon Fort. The Mormons spent two years here before the harsh desert defeated their ambitions. By 1857 the fort was abandoned.

A number of the larger shocks have produced some spectacular examples of surface faulting; these include shocks at Pleasant Valley (1915), Cedar Mountain (1932), Excelsior Mountain (1934), Rainbow Mountain (1954), and Fairview Peak - Dixie Valley (1954). Although these events are classied as major earthquakes in terms of magnitude , no fatalities were reported and building damage was minimal because of the sparse population of the epicentral areas. The earliest reported earthquake in Nevada occurred in 1851. A newspaper article in 1865 cited reports of an earthquake 13 years earlier near Pyramid Lake. The account stated that great cracks opened from which water spouted 100 feet high. Large landslides were also reported. On October 2, 1915 , three strong earthquakes within about 7 hours disturbed a large part of northern Nevada. The third tremor had an estimated magnitude of 7.75. It destroyed or seriously damaged many adobe houses in Pleasant Valley. Most of the damage was confined to the towns of Kennedy, Lovelock, and Winnumucca. The earthquake was felt over a very wide area - from Baker, Oregon, to San Diego, California, and from the Pacific coast to beyond Salt Lake City, Utah, an area of about 1,295,000 square kilometers. A scarp 1.5 to 4.5 meters high and 35 kilometers long, was formed parallel to the base of the Sonoma Mountains. About 100 aftershocks followed the main earthquake.

The History of Peyotism in Nevada
Omer C. Stewart
from Nevada Historical Society Quarterly, Vol 25 No 3, 1982
USING ONLY THE TRADITIONAL methods of history, which heavily depend on published or unpublished written records, or ethnography, which rely on data collected by interviews with native informants and knowledge obtained by participant observation, would leave a very incomplete and distorted picture of Peyotism in Nevada Notwithstanding the fact that Peyotists have always been a small minority in the total Nevada Indian population, they have become known world-wide and provide examples of a number of the peculiar circumstances connected with the whole history of the Peyote religion in the New World. Involved in that history is the nature of the unusual, small, spineless cactus called by the Aztecs Peyotl , Peyote by the Spanish, Mexicans and Indians in the area of its abundant growth along the Rio Grande in south Texas and northern Mexico, and by botanists named Lophophora williamsii (Lemaire) Coulter . Also important is the strong American tradition whereby some citizens try to legislate against behavior of which they disapprove, exemplified by the Eighteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution which prohibited use of alcohol. The history of Peyotism in Nevada is incomprehensible if not placed in the national context.
