There were many Spanish explorers in the 1770s who came near the Nevada area, but it wasn't until 50 years later that fur traders venturing into the Rocky Mts. publicized the region.
Nevada's first settlement was Genoa, near Carson City, settled by Mormons in 1849, then called Mormon Station.
Nevada's name was adopted in 1861 when territory was established. The name was derived from the Spanish language, meaning "snow-capped".
Nevada was admitted as part of Utah Territory in 1854 and then as the Territory of Nevada on March 2, 1861.

General History of the State
The region now occupied by the State of Nevada was held by the Goshute, Mojave, Paiute, Shoshone and Washoe Indians and claimed by the Spanish Empire until the early 1800s. The northern extent of the Spanish claim was defined as the 42nd parallel in the Adams-Onis Treaty of 1819 between the United States and Spain. This north latitude line serves currently as Nevada's northern boundary with Oregon and Idaho.

Reno and Lake Tahoe 1900 South Carson Street Carson City, Nevada 89701 Email: cccvb@carson-city.org East of Lake Tahoe on Highway 50 is the town of Carson City, Nevada - capital of the state of Nevada. You might recall the Cartwrights leaving the Ponderosa to head into town - into Carson City. Now your family can head over to Carson City for a look around and recapture some of that pioneer ambiance. In the 1850's, the settlement took its title from the Carson River, which had been named in 1844 by John C. Fremont for his scout, Kit Carson. By 1861 Carson City was the capital of the metal-rich frontier state of Nevada. The citizens have always been proud of their town and its history. To get a taste of the early years, get a copy of the "Kit Carson Trail Map" in town ($2.50) and give the family a walking tour that passes by all 59 points of interest, including a depot, courthouses, a brewery, and mansions. There are a couple of things you may notice while perusing the calendar of events listed below - First, there isn't much planned for most of July and August. The reason is the season - expect heat in full Summer. Second, there are a number of Native American events open to the public. You will be very aware of the indigenous culture in this area. Take advantage of the opportunity to explore the contribution of all cultures.

In 1859 the Comstock Lode silver strike was discovered, sparking the first major wave of emigration into the area. Carson City was named after the Carson River by city father Abraham Curry in 1860. In 1861 the Nevada Territory was formed, and Carson made its capital. Nevada was granted statehood on Oct. 31, 1864. Of the 17 counties in Nevada, only Carson City and Virginia City have remained county seats since the beginning of statehood.

Carson City sits in the center of one of the most scenic and historic areas in the country, making it the perfect starting point for sightseeing. The habitat of the Eastern Sierra must have been a welcome refuge for explorers Kit Carson and John C. Fremont as they rode into Eagle Valley during their 1840s quest to map the West. To the east, long stretches of desert mark the difficult terrain settlers had to endure to get here. To the west, the Sierra Nevada mountains stretch out as a gateway to the Pacific. Kit Carson Trail - Wild West Tour During that time, Northern Nevada saw its first wave of white settlers. The Bidwell-Bartleson party is believed to have made their way through the area in 1841. Westbound traffic increased, spurred by the big boom of 1848-1849 when the discovery of California gold ignited the frontier spirit and transformed Eagle Valley.

Later many wagon trains crossed Nevada on the way to California, especially during and after the gold rush of 1849. Travelers going to California over the Old Spanish Trail also crossed S Nevada, and Las Vegas became a station on the route. Guided by Kit Carson, John C. FrEmont had explored much of the state between 1843 and 1845, and his reports gave the federal government its first comprehensive information on the area, which the United States acquired from Mexico in the Mexican War . These accounts may have aided Brigham Young when he was shepherding the Mormons west to build a new home in the mountains and valleys of Utah. See photos of Nevada City in our Photo Gallery Nevada City, Queen City of the Northern Hills Nevada City was originally called Deer Creek Dry Diggins when it was just a mining camp. In the fall of 1849 Dr. A.B. Caldwell opened a general store and the mining camp started resembling a town. The town became Caldwell's Upper Store. In 1850, the town was looking more like a city, with a cities' problems. The citizens, under Mexican law, elected a mayor, or "Alcalde," to establish and keep order. After the initial gold rush, merchants, bankers and the like came to Nevada City and built homes in the style of the day. This was during the reign of Queen Victoria, and that style of architecture became known as "Victorian". Colonial, Greek Revival, and "California Gothic" styles of architecture are well represented here as well. Most of Nevada City burned to the ground on several occasions. Two of the most interesting buildings in the downtown area are fire houses that were built with more than utilitarian style. This also accounts for the prevalance of brick buildings featuring iron shutters.

History of Stress Since 1956, when "stress" was introduced into the American vernacular, the concept has been wholeheartedly embraced by popular culture. Today, the cultural connotations of "stress" often overpower its actual definition. "Stress" is an excuse, a state of mind, and a marketing tool and oh, it's also a physiological phenomenon.
Attention to stress tends to go in cycles, usually sparked by a scientific (or pseudoscientific) discovery. Medical professionals then spiraled into national obsessions, introduced Type A and B personalities, aerobics, meditation, the link between stress and heart disease.
Stress made headlines and drove movie characters to achieve or break down. It became a topic of songs. And, finally, it achieved that zenith of cultural significance it appeared on sitcoms!
Today stress is an everyday fact of life.

and the Comstock Lode
The biggest problem in this grubstake paradise was the sticky blue-gray mud that clung to picks and shovels. When the mud was assayed, it proved to be silver ore worth over $2,000 a ton - in 1859 dollars! Gold mixed with high quality silver ore was recovered in quantities large enough to catch the eye of President Abe Lincoln. He needed the gold and silver to keep the Union solvent during the Civil War. On October 31, 1864 Lincoln made Nevada a state although it did not contain enough people to constitutionally authorize statehood. Introduction to ... A History of Virginia City and The Comstock Lode, By Ronald M. James The resulting boom turned Virginny Town into Virginia City, the most important settlement between Denver and San Francisco; and the grubby prospectors into instant millionaires who built mansions, imported furniture and fashions from Europe and the Orient, and financed the Civil War. With the gold and silver came the building of the , which ran from Reno to Carson City to Virginia City and later to Minden. The investments made in mining on the Comstock in the 1860's, 1870's and 1880's fueled the building of San Francisco. Wm. Ralston and Crocker, founders of the Bank of California made their money in Virginia City. Names like Leland Stanford, George Hearst, John Mackay, Wm. Flood and many others made their fortunes in Comstock mining.

Nevada Day The Story Behind Nevada Day Carson City's Nevada Day parade and celebration is among the oldest ongoing parade activities held in the Silver State, and with the exception of Hawaii and West Virginia, is the only admission day activity of its kind in the country. Regarding the inaugural parade in 1938, the Daily Appeal claimed the event was "Nevada's largest and best Admission Day Celebration in the history of the state." Celebrating Nevada Day in Carson City is a long time-honored tradition, but the history on commemorating our statehood predates the 1938 parade by more than 60 years. The first observance of Nevada's admission to the Union in 1864 appears to have been initiated on the Comstock by the Pacific Coast Pioneer society in the 1870's. Journalist Alfred Doten of the Gold Hill news mentions a "grand celebration" in 1873 in his diaries. The Pioneer society held a sumptuous banquest on October 31, 1889, in honor of Nevada's 25th anniversary as the 36th state. There may have been other commemorative events outside the Comstock but the state of Nevada did not officially recognize its birthday until two years later. The state legislature passes a bill in 1933, introduced by Senator Ira L. Winter of Carson City, which designated October 31st as "Nevada Day" and a discretionary state holiday. The new law
