"History For The Taking"
Virginia City, Nevada is one of America's largest Historic Landmarks. Located just south east of Reno, Nevada, this historic mining town is easily accessible by car from Lake Tahoe, Reno, or Carson City. Some say Virginia City's rich gold and silver mines financed the Civil War. Now rich in history, Virginia City and the Comstock Lode still maintain the flavor of the hifalutin mining days, when Mark Twain roamed the streets and everybody wanted a piece of the "Richest Place on Earth." Mexican War . These accounts may have aided Brigham Young when he was shepherding the Mormons west to build a new home in the mountains and valleys of Utah.
    The Lure of Minerals
When in 1850 the federal government set up the Utah Territory, almost all of Nevada was included except the southern tip, which was then part of New Mexico. Non-Mormons had been averse to settling in Mormon-dominated territory, but after gold was found in 1859 non-Mormons did come into the area. A rush from California began and multiplied manyfold as news of the Comstock Lode silver strike spread. Most of the newcomers preferred to consider themselves as still being within California, and a political question was added to the general upheaval. Meanwhile, miners came helter-skelter, raising camps that grew overnight into such booming and raucous places as Virginia City. Partly to impose order on the lawless, wide-open mining towns, Congress made Nevada into a territory in 1861 as migrant prospectors and settlers poured in. The territory was then enlarged by increasing its eastern boundary by one degree of longitude in 1862. It was rushed into statehood in 1864, with Carson City as its capital. President Lincoln (in order to get more votes to pass the Thirteenth Amendment) had signed the proclamation even though the territory did not actually meet the population requirement for statehood.
The Federal Government and Population Growth
Hoover Dam Nevada's population, sparse since the time when the Paiute and other tribes eked out a meager living from the land and animals, increased by more than 1200% between 1950 and 2000. By far the fastest-growing U.S. state, Nevada is increasingly home to retirees and to workers in new, especially technological, industries.

Virginia City, Nevada, evokes an image much like the Dodge Durango. Steeped in history and the legendary engineering exploits of spirited men and women, Virginia City came of age as wide-eyed miners, spurred by California's 1849 Gold Rush, scoured the remote hills and canyons of the West. In 1858, astride the mountain range east of Washoe Valley, a rush ignited from the discovery of silver-rich, gold bearing ore at a site nicknamed "Virginia." Within a decade, a city emerged, 11,000 people strong.
Gold Hill Hotel dates to 1859. Revitalized with good taste, hotel offers overnight lodging, fine dining and a lively historic bar replete with local color and lore. While California mining of that period was largely placer and hydraulic claims, the extreme challenges of Virginia City's underground mines attracted world-class engineers and geologists. The innovation of these 19th Century technologists, matched by the hard working Comstock Lode miners, helped wrench 700,000 tons of ore a year from the slopes and canyons east of 7,864 foot high Mt. Davidson. So rich was the area that President Abraham Lincoln hastily granted statehood to Nevada in 1864. As the Civil War spent lives and resources, the Comstock filled the Union's coffers with vitally needed funding.

The Clark County Museum – a wonderful tribute to this history, and a showcase of mining and mineral information – was celebrating its traditional Gem and Mineral Fair – held each October in honor of Nevada Day. The Fair is a three day event and features tours of the museum that include a trip down a street of historic period refurbished houses and businesses; a walk back in time from the early hunter-gatherer Indians to the days of the gold rush to the coming of the railroad to the depression, WW I and II, the role of mining during these times, the enormous growth of Las Vegas and right on up into the present. There are old rail cars – a wonderful open air stage for outdoor presentations; native plants, carefully maintained and identified, a superb little gift shop and a friendly and knowledgeable and enthusiastic staff. Staff estimates over 2500 people attended this years' fair. The parking lot and drive-throughs were lined with vendors selling mineral specimens, books, fossils, handcrafted jewelry, and magnificent crystals. There were rope makers and gold panners and informational, educational displays as well. Which is where your Association comes into the picture. The NvMA, Nevada Division of Minerals and MK Gold had a booth/display featuring information on mining in Nevada, with the emphasis on education.

    Historical Note:
    Trick or treat . . .
On Halloween in 1864, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed Nevada the 36th state in the Union. Some people say it was a trick of Lincoln's to get a new unionist state just in time for his re-election in November. Others say he did it for a treat to get more financing for the Civil War by tapping into Nevada's newly discovered Silver mines. Whether a trick or a treat, Nevada's statehood made a huge difference in the country. It provided the one vote necessary to ratify the 13th Amendment, which abolished slavery from United States forever.

NVGHOSTTOWNS.COM PRESENTS: Shawn Hall's Welcome to Shawn Hall's Nevada Ghost Town website. The purpose of this site is to provide the active ghosttowner, historians, and arm-chair enthusiast an opportunity to enjoy the many wonderous ghost towns that Nevada has to offer. The main page of the website features a profile of a new ghost town every couple of months. These profiles provide a detailed history, summary of current remains, and when available, photographs. Some places included aren't necessarily ghost towns but fit the accepted description of a ghost town presented by legendary ghosttowner Lambert Florin: "A shadowy semblance of a former self." Please feel free to bookmark this page and visit often. All comments and suggestions are greatly appreciated. Any additions are always welcome! If you notice omissions or have some photos for listed sites that don't have any, please feel free to let me know and I will make the additions with full credit given to you! Another new addition is a "Ghost Towner Photo Page." This is just for fun and anyone who has "people" photos at ghost towns, please send them to me and I'll put them on the page. As a final note, please respect remains at any ghost town you might visit. These are valuable remembrances of a bygone era that once gone, can never be replaced. Please only take photographs and do not destroy what little remains. These sites are our heritage and must be respected so future generations can also enjoy visiting the ghostly remains of the Old West.

    History of Laughlin
Laughlin, a gambling resort in the southern most tip of Nevada, has transformed part of the arid, rugged Mojave desert into a fast growing tourist destination. This hot, dry region, known as the tri-state area, is the geographic meeting point of San Bernardino County, Calif., Mojave County, Ariz., and Clark County, Nev. A hundred thousand years ago the area was lush with abundant moisture. Then climactic changes occurred. Scant rainfall and searing heat transformed the region into a desolate, unforgiving desert wilderness. Jagged peaks and ravines created by volcanic activity eons ago gives the territory a forbidding, alien landscape. The savage Colorado River sliced a sharp, interminable crevasse through the desert as it rushed toward the Gulf of California carrying the snow runoff from the Rocky Mountains. The life-giving and sometimes treacherous river marks the border between Arizona and Nevada. Lizards, rattlesnakes, desert tortoises, jack rabbits, coyotes, badgers, kit foxes and desert bighorn sheep were the sole inhabitants for centuries. Blazing heat and the sterile, crusty earth discouraged human trespassers. Summer temperatures often crest above 120 degrees Fahrenheit (49 degrees Celsius). Winters may be equally severe with below freezing temperatures. Precipitation averages 3 to 5 inches annually and primarily occurs in the winter or between July and September.
