On the way into Wendover from the west , the freeway tops a rise and then sweeps down toward the Bonneville Salt Flats below. If you pull over to the side of the road at the crest and park for a few minutes, you can study a view unlike anything else in the world. The Salt Flats extend in a broad white plain, the desert's skin stretched tight, as far as the eye can see - and it curves. The horizon line is a clear arc from side to side, and the two stripes of freeway pavement curve away across the alkali toward the vanishing point. Nowhere else on land can you actually the curvature of the earth.
Columbus was right! Almost as amazing as its shape is the earth's texture and color here, spread out in horrid immensity: surely the cruelest desert your eyes will ever see. And where the bleached and crusty sea of alkali meets a shoreline of dead brown hills, is Wendover. Feast your eyes on that scene for a while. You'll never forget it.

NEXT Return To The Index Saloon When Europeans first visited the area they found three major tribes. The Py-utes (Paiutes) - northern and southern, the Sho-sho-ne, and the Washoe.
Dr. Garland Hurt, an Indian agent, divided the Sho-sho-nes into Snakes, Bannacks, To-si-witches, Go-sha-utes, and Cum-um-pahs, though he later classed the last two divisions as hybrid races between the Sho-sho-nes and the Utes.
The Paiute were divided into two groups, inhabiting both northern and southern Nevada. The Northern Paiute have inhabited Pyramid Lake, near Reno, for generations. The Southern Paiute made its home in the Moapa Valley. The Paiute belong to the great Shoshone stock and occupy most of Nevada.
The Shoshone occupied much of northeastern Nevada. They belong to a large language group that extends into Mexico, the Pacific Northwest, and the Great Plains.
The Wa Sui or Washo occupied the area of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range that borders Nevada and California. According to some authorities the Washo, who are well known for their basketry, have lived in their homeland for 4,000 years. Their dialect is quite different from that of any other Nevada Indians, and they have no affinity, so far as known, with any other Indians.

Museums of Northern Nevada
I admit it, I'm a history buff, so you'll be seeing Nevada history topics pop up here from time to time. The Northern Nevada area has some wonderful museums to explore on and off-line. Many of them are listed in the "History/Museums" topic under links. Many more don't have websites, but are waiting to be explored when you visit the area. The Nevada Historical Society, located on the campus of the University of Nevada, Reno, is one of the best resources for Nevada History in the state. Remodeled in 1999, it's new look is open and inviting, and the research area is a joy to work in. Right next door to the Historical Society is the Fleischmann Planetarium , local "museum of the stars." They show movies throughout the day and evening on their domed screen. You also get a demonstration of the planetarium, along with the show. Tickets are $6, and available by calling 784-4812.

Nevada History - June 2003
Nevada Swings Into the Seventies
By Tony Illia Nevada hit the 1970s in full swing, adding to its already dazzling display of resort casinos and entertainment amenities. In Las Vegas, for example, a number of high-profile projects raised the level and quality of Strip offerings. Notably, Circus Circus, which had opened in 1968 as a $15 million 700-slot casino, built a 15-story, 400-room hotel tower and 850-seat showroom. Developed by Jay Sarno, creator of Caesars Palace, the major addition was financed with a $15.5 million Teamsters Pension Fund loan and completed in July 1972.
