VIRTUAL CLEARINGHOUSE FOR NEVADA GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION
This Web site provides links to organizations that provide geographic information, including geographic information system (GIS) coverages. At its meeting in January 1998 the State Mapping Advisory Committee agreed to establish this Web site as a beginning for a clearinghouse for geographic information. The Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology volunteered to manage the Web site. We encourage organizations interested in mapping and geographic information in Nevada to link to this Web site and to provide us with links to appropriate sites. Please send information to NBMG's Webmaster and Editor, Dick Meeuwig, by e-mail (dmeeuwig@unr.edu) In many cases the type of information that is provided is obvious in the title (for example, we can expect that Clark County produces GIS coverages of Clark County). Nonetheless, if you would like to supply a brief paragraph explaining what your organization is, what types of products you have available, whether you meet FGDC standards for metadata and GIS coverages, and who the key contacts are for geographic information in your organization, we will add this information to the Web site. The listing for the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology is an example. Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology The Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology (NBMG) is the state geological survey and a research and public service unit of the University and Community College System of Nevada. NBMG is a producer, wholesaler, and retailer of geologic maps and reports, a retailer of topographic maps of Nevada, and a source of statewide, regional, county, and quadrangle-scale GIS coverages. Most GIS coverages comply with the FGDC standards. For information about maps and GIS coverages, please contact:

Geography
The Sierra Nevada stretches 400 miles (650km), from Fredonyer Pass in the North to Tehachapi Pass in the South. The Sierra are bounded on the West by California 's Central Valley , and on the East by the Great Basin In East-West cross section, the Sierra is shaped like a non-equilateral triangle: the altitude gradually increases as you travel East, until you reach the crest, whereupon the altitude rapidly decreases. Thus, the Sierra crest runs along the eastern edge of the Sierra. Rivers flowing West from the Sierra crest drain into the Pacific Ocean , while rivers draining east flow into the Great Basin and do not reach any ocean. There are several notable geographical features in the Sierra Nevada:
  • Lake Tahoe is a large, clear freshwater lake in the northern Sierra Nevada, with an elevation of 6225 feet (1,897m) and 191 square miles (489 sq km) of area. Lake Tahoe lies between the main Sierra and the
