Original Article: An Overview of Special Education Services
Available to Cancer and Leukemia Patients
by Barry Sugarman, B.S.ENGR., President
The Cure Our Children Foundation Special Thanks to Lori Milstein, Mark Ross, and Izac Ross Patients being treated for Ewing's Sarcoma and any other cancer or Leukemia by themselves or through their parents are entitled to seek and receive special education services for their children before during and after treatment. The legal qualification is termed "other health impairment" (OHI is the abbreviation). Special Education and related services and aids designed to meet patients' unique needs and prepare them for employment and independent living are provided for by federal law under the Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act Amendments of 1997 (IDEA), United States Code Title 20, beginning at section 1400. Although there are many rights and entitlements that are available under this act, the reality is that you have to fight for everything that you get because Congress did not fully fund this law, and the schools are always looking for reasons to deny services or reduce them to amounts that their budgets can withstand.

Room Mothers and a Whole Lot More
Involving Parents as Partners in Education Teachers In Greensville County, Virginia, converted a mobile home into a parent resource center so they could meet with parents at their homesor workplaces, or even store parking lotsto help them help their children learn. At Anderson Elementary in Reno, Nevada, a former gang member advised parents on keeping their kids out of gangs. When new computers arrived at Heather Hill School in Flossmoor, Ill., a call went out to parents to serve as trouble-shooters and consultants. At schools across the country, parents are invited to classrooms to share insights and information about their careers. In ways large and small, administrators everywhere are seeking to expand and improve parental involvement in children's education.

PUBLIC SQUARE An Oasis in the Nevada Desert: Camp Make Believe
by J. C. Bowman I have spent millions of hard-earned tax dollars to help children. It was a daunting task. And one I committed to doing right. "Right" by the taxpayer and right by families, schools, and communities, to make sure no child is left behind.
For over a year, I've had my professional eye on a little program in Nevada that "could" and is, making a difference, in the lives of children and families. I've watched that program, Camp Make Believe, designed to develop self-control, self-esteem and self-confidence in all children, grow from an exciting after-school program to an overall innovative initiative.
This program was doing something unusual. It was putting together cost-effective, user-friendly programs, books, audio-tools, strategies and tools, that parents and teachers can use on the spot and over the long haul - and it was doing it under one umbrella.
I had to see it. If this looked as good as it sounded and read, I had a hunch we could model it, not only in Nevada, but also around the country, even around the globe.
