Who would refuse free money? No one—which is why scholarships should not be ignored by any college student. Scholarships provide students with well-deserved recognition for their academic achievements, and there are a good number of scholarship dollars just waiting to be tapped into by Latinos. Individual schools often create partnerships with corporate sponsors and foundations to sponsor minority students, for example. The scholarship search can begin locally with civic organizations such as a Hispanic Chamber of Commerce or a chapter of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC). But there are also many national scholarships to discover, such as the Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF).
High school counselors can help you access this information, and it’s also available in school libraries and book stores. The easiest way to research scholarships, however, is over the Internet. A quick Web search using the key words “Hispanic scholarships” will yield numerous sources of scholarship information. This guide has pulled several examples of Hispanic scholarships—local and national—with which to begin a scholarship search. Students and parents must start looking for scholarships by the student’s junior year in high school. Considering the potential return, the time invested in an aggressive scholarship search is time well spent. AMOCO Foundation Undergraduate Scholarship Program

Rural Statistics
The Rural Bellwether
By Kathy Christie
Reprinted with permission from Phi Delta Kappan , February 2001. Schools in rural America face an array of problems every bit as daunting and intractable as those confronting schools in urban communities. In rural communities, graduating students who see no future locally leave town, and a snowball effect begins. These young people are no longer there to start families, to send their children to school, to buy toothpaste from the local druggist or houses from the local realtor. A “brain drain” begins that leaves fewer high-quality workers to attract high-quality jobs. Fewer high-quality jobs means even fewer opportunities for the next generation of students, who will find themselves forced by economic necessity to leave the community. In fact, in 22 states, more than half of all rural schools lost students between the 1994-95 and 1997-98 school years, according to the newsletter Rural Policy Matters. Those states with the highest percentages of enrollment loss were Louisiana, Idaho, North Dakota, West Virginia and Wyoming. States with large rural populations have begun to face these and other problems of rural schooling directly.

Exploding a Myth Nevada Casinos Fail to Support Education Nevada gambling interests have long perpetuated the myth that the industry pays most of the state's bills, especially education. Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, the gross gaming tax is only responsible for about eight percent of the state's annual budget. That the myth persists beyond state borders is evidenced by letters to Sen. Neal such as the following: Dear Mr. Neal: I am a student at the University of Oklahoma. I am doing a presentation on why Oklahoma should legalize casino gaming. My emphasis is on how gaming taxes would support Oklahoma school districts. I would appreciate information on the current Nevada law that makes casinos pay a tax to help fund schools. I would also appreciate your opinion on how the law should stand. Thank you for your time and consideration.
