Nevada City to Hwy 89
Outside of Nevada City
I have ridden this road many times over the years. Maybe because it's a main highway and its proximity to Sacramento and Truckee. A great loop to take for an entire day, this pass is well-known but not busy enough to ever make it congested. And several towns, all primarily gold rush towns, such as Nevada City and Downieville make this a great ride. With great pavement, plenty of resting places, just the right amount of towns every now and then combine this into a great afternoon ride. And with its terminus just north of Truckee, it's a fast ride if you want to get back home and head back into civilization on I-80.
Headed out of Nevada City (yes, you must explore this tiny little town), the road gets squiggly right away as it drops into the middle fork of the South Yuba River then heads back up. This is a twisty section that is repeated many times over in the foothills. You'll most likely get stuck behind a mini-van, but if not- rip roarin' ride down and up. This is a great swimming hole spot also on the river at the bottom of the hill.
