History
Nepal is strategically located between the two giants, India and China. Legend goes that the Kathmandu Valley was a lake and the Buddhist Manjushri came from china with a magical sword and sliced open the valley to drain the water. Hindus, however, claim it was Krishna who hurled a thunderbolt to create Chobar Gorge. Around the 2nd century BC, the Indian emperor Ashoka visited Nepal and he erected the four stupas around Patan in the Kathmandu Valley. His daughter Charumati is believed to have founded Chabahil in Kathmandu.

Modern Nepal is an amalgamation of a number of principalities which had independent entities in the past before the campaign of national integration launched by Prithvi Narayan Shah the Kathmandu Valley was ruled by the Malla kings, whose contributions to art and culture are indeed great and unique. As the popular legend goes, the original settlers of the Kathmandu Valley were the Gopalas, Mahisapolas and Kiratas, later succeeded by the Lichhavis, who in turn were succeeded by the Thakuris Mattas. In 1768 the Shah dynasty ascended the throne or the unified Kingdom. The present King of Nepal, His Majesty King Birendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev, is the tenth King in the Shah dynasty. The period between 1846 and 1951 is generally described as the dark period in the history of Nepal, the period when the hereditary Rana prime-ministers ruled the country despotically. As a result of the popular revolution of 1950-51, headed by the then reigning monarch. King Tribhuvan, with the active support of late King Mahendra (then Crown Prince)

The Journal of Indian society of Oriental Art.Vol. III. B ypassing the subtle controversies in political history, we shall try to layout a very broad picture of the achievements of the main dynasties, as it emerges from the study of the Vamsavalis, inscriptions, and colophons ( petech, MHN ). Nepal history may be divided into seven ( Sharma, AN, Chap. II ) periods 1. The Legendary 2. The Gopalas 3. The Kiratis 4. The Lichchhavis 5. The Thakuri Period 6. The Mallas 7. The Sahas. No details regarding the careers of the kings of the first three dynasties are known There is no unanimity of opinion either with regards to the number of kings or their chronology. The Kirati period witnessed two events of signal importance to Nepal. It is believed that Gautama Buddha visited Nepal during the regime of the seventh king of the dynasty. It is also believed that during the reign of the fourteenth king of the same dynasty Asoka Maurya contributed to the construction of the Stupas at Patan, now virtually a suburb of Kathmandu. Thus, it was in the Kirati period that Nepal seemed to have first come in contact with the Buddhist religion and culture that flowed from India.

History of Nepal Lichavi Dynasty The Lichavis are said to have migrated into Nepal from north India in around 250 A.D. The first Lichavi king of historical importance was Manadeva 1. Another important Lichavi monarch was Anshuverma who opened trade routes to Tibet. One of his daughters, Bhrikuti, who was married to Tibetan ruler Tsrong-tsong Gompo, was instrumental in spreading the Gospel of the Buddha in Tibet and China. Anshuverma has been referred to as a man of many talents in the accounts of the Chinese traveler Huen Tsang, who had visited India in the 7th century AD. Narendradeval another Lichavi king, initiated friendly relations with China and his successors laid the foundations of friendship with India by entering into matrimonial alliances with the Indian royal families. The Lichchhavi rule spanned over a period of about 630 years, the last ruler being Jayakamadeva. Malla Dynasty After the fall of the Lichchhavis came the Malla period during which the foundation of the city of Kantipur (later Kathmandu) was laid. The early Malla rule started with Ari Malla in the 12th century and over the next two centuries grew into a large empire before disintegrating into small principalities which later became known as the Baisi (i.e. the twenty-two principalities). This was more or less coincidental with the emergence of the Chaubisi (i.e. twenty-four principalities). The history of these principalities remains shrouded up until the time when they joined other kingdoms, both large and small, to form the unified Kingdom of Nepal.

The revolution of November 1950 brought to an end of Rana regime who ruled the country for 104 years since 1846 A.D. After the fall of Rana regime in Feb, 1951, Nepal saw the dawn of democracy. The parliamentary government under the multi-party system was adopted for some years which was followed by Panchayat System since 1960. The popular democratic revolt of 1990 has reinstated the multi party democratic system since April. The new democratic constitution of the Kingdom was promulgated on November 9, 1990.

Everest has been opened for commercial mountaineering for already four decades though esoteric expeditions took place as early as the 1920s. Competitive commercial and adventurous mountaineering took off following the first successful ascent of Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary on the mountain in late May 1953. Since then many successful climbs have been mounted on Everest from various directions. Many attempts have also failed, most of them in tragedy. Thus, a recent new name for the mountain and its foothills has emerged. It is called the Death Zone.

Ancient History
Main article: Licchavi Licchavi (also Lichchhavi Lichavi ) was an ancient kingdom in Nepal, which existed in the Kathmandu Valley from approximately 400 to 750.
Origins
Early Buddhist legends feature Lichavi as a ruling family during Buddha's time in India, however links to the Nepalese kingdom are speculative. The language of Lichavi inscriptions is Sanskrit, and the particular script used is closely related to official Gupta scripts, suggesting that India was a significant cultural influence. This was likely through Mithila - the northern part of modern Bihar, India.

Potala Palace - Lhasa, Tibet Steve Laska founded the Endless Knot Rug Company in 1980, after living and studying in Nepal from 1977 through 1979. He lived in the small village of Boudhanath, which is a Buddhists pilgrimage destination and where Tibetans settled in the early sixties. It is also where Tibetans established small weaving facilities. While living in this Tibetan enclave, Laska realized the potential of producing this very old artform, which had not as yet been introduced to the American market. In 1980, Mr. Laska started importing traditional Tibetan designed carpets on a small scale. In the mid eighties he began working with artists who submitted designs specifically for Endless Knot. The business has since grown to become one of the nations leading direct importers and distributors of hand-woven Tibetan carpets. Much of the success of the business can be attributed to the close relationship between Laska and his sole manufacturer in Nepal that began in 1977. Today, top domestic and international artists work closely with the company in maintaining its industry leading presence. Offering a fresh approach, the designs and colors represent the finest examples of floor coverings in the United States. Now, with over 130 different designs and colorways in the Classic, Contemporary and Lhasa Collections, Endless Knot rugs are available at design center showrooms, oriental rug galleries and furniture showrooms throughout the United States and have been featured in Elle Décor, Interior Design, Metropolitan Home and Architectural Digest Magazines.

History: Nepal was created from an amalgam of small principalities in 1768 under King Prithvi Narayan Shah. Under the control of a hereditary king, Nepal then became a ‘buffer state’ between the British empire and the territories to the north. The main instrument of British rule from the mid-19th century onwards was a hereditary prime minister drawn from the Rana family. The country became formally independent in 1923, but it was not until 1947 (the year of Indian independence) and the total withdrawal of the British from the region that Nepal achieved genuine independence. In 1951, the Ranas, who were still in power, were overthrown in a coup organised by the Nepali Congress, and a hereditary monarchy was restored under King Tribhuvan. Four years later he was succeeded by his son, King Mahendra. In 1959 Mahendra established a parliamentary constitution, and the ensuing elections were won by the Nepali Congress (led by B. P. Koirala) which had played a key role in the re-establishment of the monarchy. A year later however, a royal coup led to the banning of all political parties and the establishment of a constitution based on the traditional village councils (the Panchayat system). Mahendra ruled until his death in 1972 when he was succeeded by his son Birendra.
