Alcohol
Home distillation is an ancient practice in Nepal, still managing to hold its own against modern distilleries. The Nepali brand-name hard liquors are best avoided. Often adulterated with chemicals they can give a quick headache. Imported brands are expensive. The Nepali beer market is booming, with at least four local brands and two local licensees on the market.
The finest alcohol is homemade stuff. Raksi is potent, exhilarating and smooth as velvet. To test for good raksi, toss a small amount on a fire and see if it burns. Women of a household pride themselves on their liquor, and will put the most effort and time into making raksi for a big celebration like a wedding. Different grains produce different flavors: rice raksi is rich and smooth, kodo (millet) is stronger and more fiery.
Less potent is home-brewed beer, land (Nepali) or chang (Tibetan), a whitish, thin drink made from rice or millet with a refreshing sweet-sour taste. A variation served in mountain regions is tongba, fermented mash which is placed in a wooden container and mixed with hot water. You drink from a bamboo straw, sipping the liquid and avoiding the bits of millet; the hot water is refilled several times, and nursing a flask of tongba is a nice sport for a cold evening.

http://www.ascentsherpaland.com/geography.html
Situated between longitude 80º 4" to 88º 12" north, Nepal is a landlocked country encompassing an area of 145,391 square kilometers. The country is almost rectangular in shape with its 120 to 240 kilometers width and nearly 900 kilometers length wedged between the two Asian giants of China and India. Within this small area lies one the most diverse topographies and varied plant and animal life to found in the world. This is but to be expected in a country where the land rises from a lowly 67 meters above sea level all the way to the tip of Mount Everest at 8848 meters in a distance of 100 kilometers or so. Geographically, Nepal can be divided into seven regions going east and west. Although these divisions have mainly to do with altitude, they are equally different in the physical terrain as well. All across the south is the Tarai lowlands, an extension of the Indo-Gangetic plain into the political borders of Nepal, touches the hills and mountains further north. These plains, which stretch the length of the country with an average width of around 30 kilometers, is the bread basket of Nepal. Next comes the Churia Hills, an unimpressive range that rises to around 1300 meters. These hills generally stand bereft of any vegetation and are most notable for their stark ugliness as opposed to the blue of the taller mountains at the back.

CLIMATE:
Nepal's climate, influenced by elevation as well as by its location in a subtropical latitude, ranges from subtropical monsoon conditions in the Tarai, through a warm temperate climate between 4,000 and 7,000 feet in the mid-mountain region, to cool temperate conditions in the higher parts of mountains between 7,000 and 11,000 feet, to an Alpine climate at altitudes between 14,000 and 16,000 feet along the lower slopes of the Himalaya mountains. At altitudes above 16,000 feet the temperature is always below freezing and the surface covered by snow and ice.
Rainfall is ample in the eastern portion of the Tarai (which receives from 70 to 75 inches [1,800 to 1,900 millimetres] a year at Biratnagar) and in the mountains, but the western portion of Nepal (where from 30 to 35 inches a year fall at Mahendranagar) is drier. Because warm rain-bearing monsoon winds discharge most of their moisture as they encounter the Annapurna range, rainfall is quite heavy (about 100 inches) in the Pokhara Valley. The average annual rainfall is about 55 inches, most of which falls in the period from June to September.
In Kathmandu Valley , average temperatures range from 50 F (10 C) in January to 78 F (26 C) in July, and the lowest and highest temperatures recorded have been 27 and 99 F (-3 and 37 C). At Pokhara the temperature ranges from 40 F (4 C) in January to approximately 100 F (38 C) in June, just before the monsoon. In winter, temperatures during the day rise to 70 F (21 C), creating pleasant conditions, with cool nights and warm days.

Academic Standards Our Aims The School Library Business Studies ... Physical Education, Outdoor Education “What is our knowledge worth if we know nothing about the world that sustains us, nothing about natural systems and climate, and nothing about other countries and cultures?” (Jonathan Porritt, an environmentalist) At The British School, Geography is an important part of the curriculum throughout all Key Stages. We are lucky that our host country is so interesting in geographical terms for students (and teachers of Geography for that matter!). Nepal is a country where the elevation ranges from near sea level to the highest point on earth, making Nepal a fascinating place to study physical geography. The study of human geography is enhanced by the fact that Nepal has been described as the ‘ethnic turntable of Asia’. At TBS we adapt the UK National Curriculum allowing students to develop the geographical skills that are taught in the UK, while remaining relevant to students in an international context. These skills include aspects of presentation, interpretative skills and map skills. ICT is widely used in teaching geography. All students carry out and enjoy appropriate aspects of fieldwork which allow us to take Geography outside the classroom. Regular trips include a river study in the jungles of Southern Nepal, trips to the Kathmandu Valley rim and adjacent valleys and a settlement enquiry in Kathmandu city centre.

Nepal in the Geographical World Records:
Professor Ram Kumar Panday, a famous geographer of Tribhuvan University in Nepal has written in his book "Altitude Geography of Nepal" that Nepal has many geographical world records. The followings are some of the interesting records he has listed in his book.
  • The Highest Peaks: There are 1,310 peaks in the Nepal Himalayas exceeding 20,000 ft.
  • The Highest number of highest peaks: Nepal has 17 peaks out of 22 peaks exceeding 26,250 ft(8,000m), about 127 peaks exceeding 22,970 ft (7,000 m) and 1,166 peaks over 19,960 ft (6,000m).
  • The Deepest Gorge: The gorge of Kali Gandaki between Dhaulagiri 26,796 ft) and Annapurna I (26,547 ft) is the deepest gorge in the world. It is 22,860 feet (6,967m) deep.

Nepal is a sovereign independent kingdom which lies between 80 degree 4' and 88 degree 12' east longitude and 26 degree 12' - 30 degree 27' north latitude. The Tibetan autonomous region of china and on the east, west and south bound the country on the north by India. East-west length of e country is 880 km. and its breadth varies from 144 to 240 km North South. It lies in the Temperate Zone with an added Advantage of extreme altitude. The Terai region and some deep valleys are seldom less than three thousand feet above sea level. The extreme heats in the south the extreme cold in the Khumbu region in Sagarmatha/ Chomolangma/ Everest ads an interesting fact. Though it is severely cold in winter the blue clear sky and sunny days compensate it. All seasons are good for traveling in Nepal having their own unique charm.

Save the Children UK Alternative Education Project The project has aimed to establish low cost, community managed Non-Formal Education classes with flexible hours and child friendly teaching methods. This project is being implemented in the rural areas of Sindupalchowk. In a period of 9 months, these classes will prepare children between the ages of 11-16 years to be qualified for grade 5 in government schools. Similarly children aged between 6-10 years will have 4 months NFE class to mainstream them in grade 4 of government schools. Both types of classes use available curriculum developed by the government or others. Decentralized Child Focused Education Management Information System
SC UK in collaboration with the Ministry of Education/Department of Education is piloting Community Based EMIS in some villages of Surkhet district. This project aims to mobilize the community including children, parents, teachers, and community workers to collect information, analyze it and use it. Each child and her/his education status will be recorded and updated. People themselves will prepare the education plan, define the role of each stakeholder on the basis of information and implement it. Right to Basic Education for Dalit Girls
Despite provisions of many facilities for primary education in Doti district by the government, girls from lower caste families are not included. The project aims to build interest, motivation and commitment among lower caste girls themselves, their parents, teachers, and other local community people to bring and retain them in primary schools. SC UK is implementing this project in partnership with a local NGO called Community Development Center.

  • Review the meaning of location, place, relationship, and/or movement (See "Background Information for Teachers," ). Have students give examples of each theme in relation to your town and state. Brainstorm a list of facts about Nepal. Encourage students to consider facts that illustrate the theme or themes you would like to emphasize. After reading "Snapshot of Nepal," ask students to add to your initial list.
  • As a class, brainstorm a list of facts about Nepal. Encourage students to consider the categories touched on in "Snapshot..." by asking "What about the people? What about the land?" and so on. Categorize the facts. After reading "Snapshot," ask students to correct or add to their facts. Alternatively, post sheets of newsprint around the room labeled with such categories as "Religion," "Geography," "Links to the U.S." and so on. Give students ten minutes to wander around jotting down any information they know in the appropriate categories. (Note: This can also be used as a review activity at the end of the unit.)
  • Have students skim the "Think about It" questions before reading "Snapshot." Work individually, in pairs, or as a group to respond to the questions.

epal, home to Mount Everest, is dominated by the world's most imposing mountains. Although the country is relatively small (147,181 square kilometers), 80 percent of its territory is occupied by the dramatic peaks of the Himalayas. Nepal was closed to foreign visitors until1951, a situation which contributed greatly to its mystique in the west. This small, hospitable country has since become an exceptionally popular destination for travelers, whether they are in search of climbing challenges or spiritual enlightenment. Nepal can be divided into three geographical regions, each stretching from east to west across the country. The southernmost strip of land, the Terai, is bordered to the north by Himalayan foothills and to the south by the Ganges River. The area was originally covered with tropical vegetation, but has been almost completely converted to agricultural production. The Terai is now the breadbasket of Nepal and is covered with farms.

... Click here for our free Welcome to Paradise screen saver You'll love this! Nepal: Overview Nepal is nothing short of spectacular! Picturesque rural villages are nestled amidst emerald green rice fields, with the snow-capped Himalayas in the background. Nepal forms the very watershed of Asia. Landlocked between India and Tibet, it spans terrain from subtropical jungle to the icy Himalaya, and contains or shares eight of the world's ten highest mountains. The country's cultural landscape is every bit as diverse: a dozen major ethnic groups, speaking as many as fifty languages and dialects, coexist while two of the world's great religions, Hinduism and Buddhism, overlap and mingle with older tribal traditions - yet it's a testimony to the Nepalis' tolerance and good humor that there is no tradition of ethnic or religious strife. Founded on trans-Himalayan trade, Nepal's dense, medieval cities display a unique, pagoda-style architecture, not to mention an astounding flair for festivals and pageantry. But above all, Nepal is a nation of unaffected villages and terraced hillsides - more than eighty percent of the population lives off the land - and whether you're on an organized itinerary, trekking, biking or even on an elephant safari, sampling the simple, content lifestyle of the people is perhaps the greatest pleasure of all.
