Arriving in Nepal, the traveler enters an area which is unique in its orographic, botanical and zoological diversity. The geo-historical origins of the imposing Himalayan range, which comprises a considerable portion of Nepal, tell a fascinating story. Through our understanding of plate tectonics, from which the theory of continental drift is derived, we know that the Indian continental plate separated from the old southern continent of Gondwanaland and moved north, where it slid under the old Eurasian plate. In the process, the southerly Sea of Tethys narrowed, and when at the meeting point of the two plates the Himalayas emerged, the sediments of this sea were pushed up in the process. The fossils of sea animals at a height of over 4,000 meters are proof of this.
As the Himalayas arched ever higher, rivers, whose sources are found on the Tibetan plateau, carved deep into the young mountains. This created the impressive traverse valleys which to this day serve to make the range penetrable to traffic and trade at a few points. With the incessant pressure of the Indian continental plate on the Eurasian, the growth in height of the Himalayas continues at a rate of one millimeter per year. A permanent leveling in the form of natural erosion counteracts this process.

Geography
The Himalayan range was created from powerful earth movements that occurred as the Indian plate pressed against the Eurasian continental plate. The continents are carried by the Earth's tectonic plates like people on an escalator. There are currently 7 giant plates sliding across the Earth's surface, and a handful of smaller ones. There may have been more or fewer plates in the past. Currently they slide, collide, and recede from one another at rates of 1-20 cm/year. By 25 million years ago the fast moving Indian continent had almost entirely closed over the intervening ocean, squeezing the sediments on the ocean floor. These sediments crumpled into mountain ranges - the Himalayas. By 10 million years ago the two continents were in direct collision. Today the mountains continue to develop and change, and earthquakes and tremors are frequent in the area. The plates continue to move at the same rate, which allows us to forecast fairly reliably how the Himalaya will develop. In 10 million years India will plow into Tibet a further 180km. Because Nepal's boundaries are marks on the Himalayan peaks, Nepal will technically cease to exist.
