Andal
An imaginary world
Andal is an imaginary world I've been working on since I was about twelve. That means for close on twenty years. I've written a slew of stories set in Andal (all in Dutch), a novel, and another novel I should be working on right now. I've also hosted role-playing adventures in this setting, but the primary function of Andal is to serve as a vehicle for my writing, sketching, sculpting and composition urges. As far as imaginary worlds go, Andal is quite unusual. It is not Medieval England with unfamiliar names, nor another version of Middle Earth. It isn't Greece in Indonesia, like Gehennum, nor Alexandria in Nehwon. Nor is it post-apocalyps, pre-civilistation or alternate history. In fact, I'd have a hard time characterizing Andal in terms of familiar cultures. There's something of Song China in it, and traces of Nepal under the Nevari Malla kings. Years after I had created the words Andal, Charya (Dutch spelling: Charia), Hanudan and others, when I started studying Sanskrit, Pali, Nepali and Classical Tibetan, I discovered that most of these words have a very apt meaning in one or another of the languages of the Indian sub-continent. Andal is a

Nepal Activities for Grades 10 - 12
What is Culture, Anyway?
Purpose:
To apply the concept of culture to the country of Nepal. Materials:
  • Reading: What is Culure, Anyway?"
  • Worksheet: "Vocabulary Check" Background:
In the reading "What Is Culture, Anyway?" author Jay Bonstingl emphasizes the need to view culture as a system of related parts. He also stresses the role that context plays in giving meaning to individual aspects of a culture (i.e., its "culture traits"). For example, for most westerners the swastika is a strong symbol of hate and violence. For those in Nepal and other parts of the world, however, it represents well-being and good fortune. In fact, according to the Encyclopaedia Britannica (15th Edition), the word swastika actually comes from the Sanskrit svastika which means "conducive to well being." Cultural context does indeed determine the meaning of culture traits. Activities:
  • Emphasize the concept of a system by having students try to write after taping their thumbs to the palms of their hands. Discuss the inter-connectedness of a system's parts and the effect on the whole when one part is changed. Have students give examples of systems they know. Add the word "culture" to the list. Ask students for examples of parts of the system of culture. (You may wish to refer to the infamous soda bottle in the movie The Gods Must Be Crazy when talking about the effects of changing one part of a culture.)
  • As a class have students define the word "culture." Modify the definition after they have had a chance to read "What Is Culture, Anyway?" and "On a Personal Note."

Dhulikel This impressive town is worth a day trip from Kathmandu to see the countryside and beautiful architecture (several hundred years old). Arrive early in the morning to see the sun rise over the mountains. It's possible to go on a locally organized short trek (three hours or more). The region around Dhulikel offers good training for longer treks. 20 mi/30 km east of Kathmandu. Kathmandu Everywhere you look in Nepal's capital city (pop. 535,000) there is something of interest - perhaps a small ancient temple tucked in a row of shops, an old stone figure set in the middle of the pavement, a religious sadhu in bright saffron robes meditating on the steps of a building or a Tibetan refugee spinning his prayer wheel as he walks down the street. Although their lives are guided by ancient tradition, the residents of Kathmandu are not walking anachronisms, and visiting there is not like a trip back in time. Citizens live very much in the present but have thoroughly integrated their traditions into their modern lives.

... Click here for our free Welcome to Paradise screen saver You'll love this! Nepal: Overview Nepal is nothing short of spectacular! Picturesque rural villages are nestled amidst emerald green rice fields, with the snow-capped Himalayas in the background. Nepal forms the very watershed of Asia. Landlocked between India and Tibet, it spans terrain from subtropical jungle to the icy Himalaya, and contains or shares eight of the world's ten highest mountains. The country's cultural landscape is every bit as diverse: a dozen major ethnic groups, speaking as many as fifty languages and dialects, coexist while two of the world's great religions, Hinduism and Buddhism, overlap and mingle with older tribal traditions - yet it's a testimony to the Nepalis' tolerance and good humor that there is no tradition of ethnic or religious strife. Founded on trans-Himalayan trade, Nepal's dense, medieval cities display a unique, pagoda-style architecture, not to mention an astounding flair for festivals and pageantry. But above all, Nepal is a nation of unaffected villages and terraced hillsides - more than eighty percent of the population lives off the land - and whether you're on an organized itinerary, trekking, biking or even on an elephant safari, sampling the simple, content lifestyle of the people is perhaps the greatest pleasure of all.

    Culture
Nepal is a land of contrasts that link two worlds; maintaining communication between the Hindu and ancient Buddhist cultures of the Indian subcontinent. Nepal is the home of a large number of racial and ethnic groups and minorities. The multitude of languages spoken by the Nepalese people are as diverse as the religions professed by them. Yet all of them live peacefully. Travellers call Nepal a wonderland. There are few countries in the world where so many monuments of art may be found within such a small compass. Nepal is a dream come true, a dream of Hindu and Buddhist middle ages so rooted in tradition, so unspoilt. It is the throne of the gods and the land of the shrines, sanctuaries and natural beauty. Nepal is where Gautam Buddha was born in a garden in Lumbini, 560 years before Christ. Nepal is the place where the pagoda style architecture originated. Nepal is the place where Mount Everest (Sagarmatha) is situated and in whose snowclad heights the abominable snowman (yeti) is believed to wander. Nepal is the land of the brave Gurkha soldiers and hardy Sherpas and the skilful artistic Newars. There are many separate races and tribes in Nepal, each having its own distinctive costumes, languages, dialects and customs, but who are all connected to one another by the common Nepalese "language".
