...Our History
Throughout the United States, community colleges are the largest and fastest growing segment of higher education. In this decade nearly six million students have registered for credit courses in more than 1,200 public community colleges. Most community colleges began in the 1960’s; however, Western Nebraska Community College, with a very unique history, was established in Scottsbluff in September 1926. Originally established as an extension of the University of Nebraska, Western Nebraska Community College was named Scottsbluff Junior College. The College was closed after only one year of operation and was reopened in September 1929 as part of the Scottsbluff Public School System. The College operated as a part of that system until September 1932 when it became a public, two-year institution. In May 1965, a bond issue was approved for the construction of a new campus. In June 1968, Scottsbluff Junior College became Nebraska Western College. In 1965, Western Nebraska Vocational Technical School was founded by the State Legislature in Cheyenne County at the Sioux Army Depot approximately twelve miles west of Sidney. In October 1966, classes began at the technical vocational school. In 1971, the school changed its name to Western Nebraska Technical College. In 1973, the State Legislature formed the Western Technical Community College Area which included Nebraska Western College, Western Nebraska Technical College, and the Alliance School of Practical Nursing. On July 1, 1978, the Area Board of Governors placed all three entities into a single college, multiple campus setting.

A PROJECT OF NEBRASKA TAXPAYERS FOR FREEDOM

District school boards throughout the state have raised our taxes enormously and outrageously to fund unnecessary, frivolous expenses, inflated teacher, administrator, and staff salaries, new, luxurious administration buildings, and to fund left wing and immoral classroom curriculum materials. Too often, school boards have committed such travesties with hardly a whimper of protest from the taxpaying public. Bloated budgets to feed rapacious bureaucratic appetites that believe that better education can arise only from increased funding, and the continued infiltration of our school systems by groups like Peace Now and Planned Parenthood, will continue until conservative, traditional, taxpaying parents and other overtaxed citizens begin to monitor their school boards to stop the scourge of high taxes and valueless humanism. We provide information and materials to members interested in increasing educational responsibility and choice. We believe that public schools must undergo fundamental restructuring to make them more responsive and efficient in meeting the academic needs of children and more accountable for what students actually learn.

Andreas' History of the State of Nebraska
LINCOLN COUNTY

Part 3 GENERAL HISTORY During November, 1866, the Union Pacific Railroad was completed to North Platte, and a town was laid out here by the railroad company, though the plat of the town was not filed in the office of the County Clerk until the 31st of the following January. This town was made the terminus of the railroad until the following year. As soon as the town was laid out, it began to grow with rapidity, and the Government at once made it a military post, and a garrison of soldiers were stationed here. Early in 1867, the railroad company began the erection of their machine shops and round-houses at North Platte. Until this time, property in the county had not been assessed. In April of this year, at a meeting of the County Commissioners, the Sheriff was ordered to assess all property in the county. The railroad was in the spring completed to Julesburg, and the terminus removed to that point.

What is the Oregon - California Trails Association?
The Oregon-California Trails Association ( OCTA ) is a private, not-for-profit organization dedicated to the preservation, appreciation, and enjoyment of the trans-Mississippi westward emigrant trails. OCTA works with both government agencies and private landowners to preserve and mark the trails while also helping educate the public about this fascinating period in American history. Each year, we honor those who protect the trails as well as teachers who use innovative methods to teach the history of the emigration. OCTA publishes a variety of materials and maintains a large bookstore of western history resources. Additionally, volunteers have been surveying emigrant documents for several years to construct a computerized database for studying the emigrant experience. The database can also help genealogists locate information about their emigrant ancestors.
Here in Nebraska you'll find outstanding trail history and sites along the routes connecting the Kansas City area with the great American West. We are proud of our history, geography and culture, and we welcome you to our beautiful state.
