The Society has more than 30,000 rolls of Nebraska newspapers on microfilm dating from the territorial period to the present. Specific incidents such as deaths, marriages, births, etc., will be checked by mail for a fee if the exact names (both first and last names) of the individuals and the exact date and place of the event are provided. The Nebraska newspapers have been cataloged as part of the Nebraska Newspaper Project. There are 3,532 Nebraska newspaper titles entered in this catalog. Patrons may search for newspapers held by the Historical Society using the University of Nebraska Library's IRIS online catalog at http://iris.unl.edu/screens/opacmenu.html Researchers who know the place of an event and have only an approximate date may wish to do their own research by having their library borrow relevant newspapers on film through our interlibrary loan program. Duplicate microfilm copies of all newspapers microfilmed by the Society may be purchased. For information on ordering microfilm copies, call 402-471-4776. The Society does not have a comprehensive index to all Nebraska newspapers. Various indexes to some years of some newspapers are available, as is a card index that identifies numerous articles about Nebraska's history and people found in Nebraska newspapers from various time periods. This index is known as the

Home Johnstown Long Pine Events ... Restaurants
Ainsworth, county seat of Brown County, is located in the north-central part of Nebraska, approximately 267 miles from Omaha, NE; 400 miles from Denver, CO; and 200 miles from Sioux City, IA. When Nebraska was admitted to the union in 1867, all of the area around Ainsworth was known as Sioux County and was attached to Holt County. Cattlemen and ranchers were first to settle in the area and came ahead of the railroad in the 1870's. The earliest ranch in Brown County was the Cook and Tower Ranch established in 1873, located on Bone Creek. Brown County was originally platted to cover an area which now includes two counties, but was separated to its present boundaries in 1888. For several years before and after 1880, this region was the scene of great tragedy due to the struggle between gangs of horse thieves and the vigilantes. "Doc" Middleton, leader of the most notorious horse thief gang, was captured and sent to prison in 1879. "Kid" Wade, the most famous of Middleton's followers, had eluded the officers for many months; but he was finally captured and hanged by a lynching party at Bassett, just east of Ainsworth. Ainsworth is named for Captain James E. Ainsworth, chief construction engineer of the Fremont, Elkhorn and Missouri Valley Railroad, who arrived at the town site in June 1882. Pioneers were pushing west, setting up shops and businesses. Many also were filing for homesteads on the freeland, claiming 160 acres under provisions that certain improvements be made. Ainsworth was incorporated as a village on December 2, 1883.

HISTORY
Scotts Bluff County A fur trapper by the name of Hiram Scott gained a certain immortality by dying, alone and deserted by his companions, at the base of a magnificent formation of bluffs along the North Platte River about 1828. Many others died near this spot on the old Oregon and Mormon Trails, but it was Hiram Scott for whom Scotts Bluff, Scotts Bluff County, and the city of Scottsbluff have been named. Scotts Bluff County was originally a part of Cheyenne County, but as the homesteaders began to stream into western Nebraska in 1886 and 1887, they wanted a county seat much nearer than far-away Sidney. In 1888, an election resulted in the creation of Scotts Bluff, Kimball, Banner, and Deuel Counties and a greatly reduced Cheyenne County. Gering, one of the first towns in the Panhandle and a leader in the movement for partition, became the county seat of Scotts Bluff County.
