Location:
Saunders County is in eastern Nebraska. The Platte River forms the northern and eastern boundary of Saunders County and played a role in the development of the area. South of the river, the Burlington Railroad controlled, while the area to the north belonged to the Union Pacific Railroad. At one time, the river flowed across the county from the northwest corner diagonally to the southeast corner at Ashland. Today this old river bed is called the Todd Valley. The land is fertile and settlers drew lumber from the trees which lined the river, as well as fish and wildlife.
A Brief History:
Native Americans inhabited the area as many as 6000 years ago. Contact with European fur traders in the 1700's brought contagious diseases such as small pox to these people and their population reduced. The Otoe and Pawnee lived in the area until they were forced to relocate by the government in the 1850's.

Lincoln, NE 68509-4604 About the Unicameral The History of Nebraska's Unicameral Legislature The Birth of a Unicameral George Norris George Norris, a "New Deal Republican" who settled in McCook, wore out two sets of tires while he drove throughout the state campaigning for the measure. He said the two-house system was outdated, inefficient and unnecessary. The bicameral system was modeled after the British Parliament, Norris said, which is made up of the House of Commons, with representatives elected by the people, and the House of Lords, with its aristocratic members appointed by the king. "...The constitutions of our various states are built upon the idea that there is but one class. If this be true, there is no sense or reason in having the same thing done twice, especially if it is to be done by two bodies of men elected in the same way and having the same jurisdiction." The one-house system differs little from most city, county and school district governing bodies. Most Canadian provinces operate with single-house systems.

(revised 9.30.00) [Note: This is a single part of what will be, by my classification, about 240 compact tribal histories (contact to 1900). It is limited to the lower 48 states of the U.S. but also includes those First Nations from Canada and Mexico that had important roles ( Huron , Assiniboine, etc.). This history's content and style are representative. The normal process at this point is to circulate an almost finished product among a peer group for comment and criticism. At the end of this History you will find links to those Nations referred to in the History of the Winnebago. Using the Internet, this can be more inclusive. Feel free to comment or suggest corrections via e-mail. Working together we can end some of the historical misinformation about Native Americans. You will find the ego at this end to be of standard size. Thanks for stopping by. I look forward to your comments... Lee Sultzman. Winnebago Location The Winnebago do not remember a time when they did not live at Red Banks on the south shore of Green Bay. Their occupation of Wisconsin is very ancient, perhaps thousands of years. Although they have no memories of mound-building, they may well be descendents of the earlier Mississippian, Hopewell, and Adena cultures. Their homeland lay between Green Bay and Lake Winnebago in northeast Wisconsin but they dominated the area from Upper Michigan south to present-day Milwaukee extending west to the Mississippi. Beginning in the 1640s, thousands of Algonquin refugees from the Beaver Wars (1630-1701) invaded Wisconsin from the east, and the resulting wars and epidemics brought the resident tribes, Winnebago and

V ERDIGRE, N EBRASKA located in Knox County in northeast Nebraska, was established by Bohemian settlers in the beautiful Verdigris Valley, and was platted on July 12, 1887 by George Quimby. Some of the first establishments included two saloons, a post office, & a hotel or restaurant. Among the first settlers was "Old Jules" Sandoz, father of Mari Sandoz, famous author of the book, "Old Jules". The first school was reported to have operated during the year of 1888-89, and in 1889 a schoolhouse was put up. In 1892 a catastrophic fire started by an attempt to blast open a safe burned the south half of Main Street on the west side. Many businesses were destroyed. Fires continued to plague Verdigre in its early years. Blizzards, tornadoes, drought, fires, floods, and other acts of nature seemed to continually ravage in the area. In 1914 Verdigre withstood a terrible flood, and again in 1935.
