Skeletons of millions of animals and plants were embedded in mud that hardened into rock and became the limestone that appears today on the sides of ravines and along the streams in Eastern Nebraska . North American Continent As the sea bottom slowly rose, a land of marshes and forests appeared. After many thousand years, the land became drier, and trees of all kinds grew, including oak, maple, beech, and willow. Leaves from these ancient trees can be found today pressed and printed in the red sandstone rocks. Then the sea covered the land again, bringing new shells and fish. When the land rose this time, it was covered with grass and trees. The bones of animals such as camels, tapirs, monkeys, tigers, rhinos, elephants, and tiny horses are still found today beneath our soil.

General State History
As the United States expanded to the west, the Platte Valley trails of Nebraska became the major highways. Gold seekers, Mormons and migrants on their way to California and Oregon were among the thousands of pioneers using the overland trails between 1840 and 1860. Fort Kearny was established along the route to protect these travelers. Nebraska City and other towns on the Missouri River became shipping centers and supplied both the military outposts and the new settlers. From April 3, 1860 to October 24, 1861, Pony Express riders carried their mail across the area.
In 1854, the Kansas-Nebraska Act was passed by Congress, organizing the Nebraska Territory. This act opened lands west of the Missouri, previously reserved for the Indians, to settlement. The Homestead Act of 1862 allowed settlers to claim 160 acres of land free in eastern Nebraska and statehood was granted on March 1, 1867, in a proclamation signed by President Andrew Johnson.

General History of the State
Earliest Records Nebraska's fossil beds and glacial deposits show that it once was an inland sea bed that later was elevated above water. The area once had a tropical climate, but during a later period, glaciers covered the land. Archaeologists estimate that prehistoric people inhabited the area between 10,000 and 25,000 years ago, based on discoveries of stone tools and weapons. The earliest inhabitants were nomadic hunters, but centuries later, others came to the grasslands to hunt, fish and farm.

Kansas-Nebraska Act Kansas-Nebraska Act, bill that became law on May 30, 1854, by which the U.S. Congress established the territories of Kansas and Nebraska. By 1854 the organization of the vast Platte and Kansas river countries W of Iowa and Missouri was overdue. As an isolated issue territorial organization of this area was no problem. It was, however, irrevocably bound to the bitter sectional controversy over the extension of slavery into the territories and was further complicated by conflict over the location of the projected transcontinental railroad . Under no circumstances did proslavery Congressmen want a free territory (Kansas) W of Missouri. Because the West was expanding rapidly, territorial organization, despite these difficulties, could no longer be postponed. Four attempts to organize a single territory for this area had already been defeated in Congress, largely because of Southern opposition to the Missouri Compromise . Although the last of these attempts to organize the area had nearly been successful, Stephen A.

Fort Atkinson, Nebraska
The History of Fort Atkinson
A little more than 150 years ago, when the American revolution was a mere 36 years behind us, when not a single settler had crossed the Mississippi into Iowa, and when not a single mile of railroad existed in the entire nation, a simple patch of ground a few miles north of Omaha, now surrounded by cornfields, pastures, and small town homes, was the site of the largest military post in America. Upon this quiet little patch of Nebraska once strode several thousands of soldiers, many of them veterans of the War of 1812. Here bugles blew, orders were barked, cannons roared. Here all the intricately controlled chaos of a great military establishment was conducted. Here also were Nebraska's first school, farm, sawmill, hospital and library. Here was Ft. Atkinson, the "Elysian Fields" of the 6th infantry, the first fort west of the Missouri, and the sole accomplishment of the Yellowstone Expedition of 1819. The story of Fort Atkinson began in 1804 with the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The land that is now Nebraska was once a part of the territory of Spain and later of France, and was peacefully acquired by the United States in 1803 when the French Emperor Napoleon offered the vast Louisiana Territory to the U.S. for $15,000,000. For three cents an acre, the fledgling American Republic doubled its size and acquired what would eventually form all or part of 15 states. President Thomas Jefferson proposed an expedition to be undertaken by the U.S. Army. In a confidential message to Congress he stated:

Indian Tribes
Indian tribes lived in Nebraska a few hundred years before white explorers arrived. The Missouri, Omaha, Oto and Ponca Indians were peaceful tribes, living by farming and hunting along rivers. The Pawnee tribe farmed beans, corn and squash, and hunted buffalo on the plains. Although the Pawnees fought with other Indian tribes, they were friendly with white settlers. Western Nebraska was the home of the Arapaho, Cheyenne, Comanche, and Brule and Oglala Sioux Indians. These wandering tribes, which built no villages and lived in tepees, lived by hunting buffalo. They eventually fought white settlers and U.S. government troops to keep these hunting grounds.
Spanish and French Explorers
In 1541, Spanish explorer Francisco Vasquez de Coronado led an expedition across what is now the American Southwest into Kansas. He claimed the entire territory for Spain, although the Spainards never established settlements in Nebraska.

Hunters, Explorers, and Fur Traders
Nebraska's soil has been farmed since prehistoric times, but the Native Americans of the plains : notably the Pawnee : devoted themselves more to hunting the buffalo than to farming, since buffalo, as well as the pronghorn antelope and smaller animals, were then abundant in the area. The Spanish explorer Francisco VAsquez de Coronado and his men were the first Europeans to visit the region. They probably passed through Nebraska in 1541. The French also came and in the 18th cent. engaged in fur trading, but development began only after the area passed from France to the United States in the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. The Lewis and Clark expedition (1804) and the explorations of Zebulon M. Pike (1806) increased knowledge of the country, but the activities of the fur traders were more immediately valuable in terms of settlement. Manuel Lisa, a fur trader, probably established the first trading post in the Nebraska area in 1813. Bellevue, the first permanent settlement in Nebraska, first developed as a trading post. It was 1902 and upstarts like Henry Ford and Eli Olds had it in their minds that the country needed motorized carriages. (Conventional wisdom said they were dad-burned fools 17 million horses in the U.S. that year and only 23,000 operating cars…)
But with 50 auto clubs already formed, it was clear Henry and Eli were onto something. On March 4, 1902, nine of those clubs joined to form the American Automobile Association. The rest is our history.
The Fight For Better Roads
In the beginning, roads were better suited to those 17 million horses than they were to cars. By 1916, AAA's fight for better roads led to the passage of the first-ever federal dollars for national highway construction.
As your need for safer, more comfortable travel grew, we fought for you. These days, our 80+ clubs are back where we started keeping members safe.

  • Looking Into the Future
(Winter on the Beaver Creek, early 1900s)
    Prehistory
Around the end of the last Ice Age, the first settlers to the area that would one day become St. Edward migrated in from the north and west. A number of Native American tribes have lived in this region during the past 10,000 years. The most recent Native American tribe to have lived in the St. Edward area were the Pawnee, who lived in earth lodge villages along the Beaver and Bogus creeks. The Sioux and the Omaha tribes also hunted bison in the area. In the mid-1800s, the U.S. government removed these tribes from their home areas through treaties, which cleared the way for white settlement in the area. In 1871, Boone County was organized, and the settlers who would found St. Edward began to arrive.
    Early Settlement
    J. North of nearby Columbus, Neb., platted a townsite and named it Beaver City in 1871. This attempt at settlement was unsuccessful, but in 1872 a post office was established in the vicinity named Beaver. Two years later, the Waterville Mills began operation along Beaver Creek, and other businesses began to spring up. That year, the post office changed its name to Waterville. In 1876, A. T. Coquillard of South Bend, Indiana, platted a new townsite, St. Edward. He named it after Rev. Edward Sorin, the president of Notre Dame University. His attempt at founding a town was successful, and the town grew quickly after that.
