Welcome to Gothenburg, Nebraska - U.S.A!
History
Gothenburg, Nebraska, is proud of its Swedish heritage. Gothenburg was founded in 1882 by Olof Bergstrom, a native of Hassela, Sweden, who worked for the Union Pacific Railroad. Gothenburg, Nebraska, and Göteborg, Sweden, are the only two Gothenburgs in the World. Bergstrom selected the site that was to be Gothenburg and located a farmstead about a mile north. The Union Pacific Railroad laid out the original town of eight blocks. The town was laid out parallel with the railroad tracks but not with the world, which accounts for the bend in the city's streets. Mr. Bergstrom returned to Sweden and enticed a number of people to migrate to Gothenburg. He told them it was to be a Swedish town so they would not have to learn English. The first business building was erected by E.G. West in the spring of 1883. The Union Pacific depot was built in October 1884. The first newspaper appeared on Saturday, May 9, 1885. Gothenburg reached a population of 300 and was incorporated as a town on July 8, 1885. The first church was completed in 1886. A boom occurred in the early 1890s when a canal, lake and powerhouse were built to generate electric power. A barbed wire factory, pickling works, galvanized iron works, lead pipe works, sheet copper rolling mill, brass foundry, boiler iron works, and bathtub factory were some of the firms that located in Gothenburg in the 1890s.

The village of Nemaha was originally named Nemaha City, because the founding fathers believed it would one day be a great city. Because of its location, near the Nemaha River, the name seemed fitting. The river was named by the Otoe Indians, and means "miry water." Because of the beauty of the location the founders had visions of trains winding up and down the valley, steamboats loading and unloading at the Missouri River wharf, businesses, factories, lovely homes, schools and churches. The village site is located on second bottomland and faces two riverfronts, the Little Nemaha River on the south and the Missouri River on the east. Much of the bottomland, and bluffs along the river are covered with forest timber of various kinds, also shrubs and underbrush including wild fruit and nuts. According to available records the town site of Nemaha City was selected in 1854. City lots were surveyed, staked off and offered for sale. it was surveyed parallel to the bluffs and river, bias ways, rather than by true directions, and has been confusing people ever since as to the proper direction. Allen L. Coatt was the surveyor. It is said that he was the first person to erect his cabin on the town site. Nemaha City was incorporated and approved by an act of the territorial legislature in the 1855-1856 term.

London
The first settler was John Hauman in July of 1856. He was soon followed by William Wilson, William Bachanan, Eli Lauker and Wyatt Nosier. Mary Nosier was the first child born there in March of 1857. James Cook and Louisa Snyder were married in the new town on April 25, 1858. An infant child of William Buchanan was the first death in 1857. An unknown man, claim jumped, was shot and received the honor of the first funeral (1857). London was incorporated in District Court at the April term of 1858. The first town officers were Robert Heap, James Cook, Nathaniel Minick, Eli Lauker, and John Hauman. The post office was established September 2, 1867, in Edmond Money's store. He was the first postmaster. He was followed by Charles H. Bacon (there may have been a possible substituting by his son Amos), John Harding and Mrs. John (Jeannette) Harding. Service was discontinued September 16, 1895. One of the first buildings built (1857) was by Wyatt Nosier and was used as a tavern. A store of T. C. Lee was bought by George and Jane Emerson in 1876 and used as a residence. The Nosler tavern was used as the first school, taught by Miss Louisa Snyder. The first school house was erected in August of 1857 and was accidentally destroyed by fire in 1861. Dr. S.W. McGrew, London's physician and Nemaha County school superintendent reported the following in 1870: "London school, higher department . . . held in the Christian church... 23 pupils.. .two good teachers.. .wages 50 dollars per month... 3 month school." A new school was then built.

Arnold History
Compiled by Norene Hall Mills, Author of "One Hundred Years on the South Loup"
There was town building fever in the country in the early 1800's - Broken Bow in 1882, Callaway and Gandy in '85. Merna and Anselmo in '86 and Arnold in '83. Unlike her sister villages, all platted by townsite companies, Arnold was established by one man, Richard Allen. It was 1800 when the Allen family left their Iowa home by covered wagon to seek land in central Nebraska. They struck the South Loup River and followed it wherever it might lead. The location they chose to settle was directly between the headquarters of the two big cattle companies, Henry Brothers and Arnold and Ritchie. John and Bob Henry had come in 1875 and claimed as range for their thousand head of cattle, the big table north and northeast of the future townsite and as far west as the head of the Loup. George Arnold and Sam Ritchie had come in 1876 with a like number of cattle and claimed as their range the tables and valleys east and south of future Arnold. They filed on 320 acres for ranch headquarters. The necessary surveying was done for Allen's 160-acre homestead, part of which would in time become the town of Arnold. A sod house was quickly put up. This move was viewed with alarm by the cattlemensettlers were not welcome here. The extremely violent winter of 1880-81 changed all this. Cattle died by the hundreds. These losses broke the ranchers and forced them to leave the country.

Latest Energy and Broadband Solutions Earthquake History of Nebraska The first significant earthquake felt in Nebraska occurred in 1867, the year that statehood was achieved. The tremor occurred on April 24, 1867, and was apparently centered near Lawrence, Kansas. It affected an area estimated at 780,000 square kilometers including much of Nebraska. Since 1867, at least seven earthquakes of intensity V or greater have originated within Nebraska's boundaries. Several strong earthquakes centered in neighboring States have also been felt over limited portions of Nebraska. None of these caused damage. Probably the strongest earthquake in Nebraska history occurred on November 15, 1877 . There were two shocks 45 minutes apart; the second was the strongest. At North Platte the shock was reported to have lasted 40 seconds and intensity VII effects were noted. Buildings rocked at Lincoln, and walls were damaged at Columbus. The shock was strongly felt at Omaha. Cracked walls were reported at Sioux City, Iowa. The total felt area covered approximately 360,000 square kilometers including most of Nebraska and portions of Iowa, Kansas, the Dakotas, and northwestern Missouri. On July 28, 1902, a moderate earthquake (intensity V) occurred near Battle Creek in northeastern Nebraska. The limited reports available indicate that this shock was felt at Yankton, South Dakota, and at a number of places in western Iowa. No damage was noted, although the tremor was reported ``sufficient to rattle dishes and shake bell towers'' at several points.
