Primary Sources
Harrison Johnson. . Omaha, Nebraska: Herald Printing House, 1880.
Great source for early history of Nebraska. Has listing by counties and some specifics of early settlement. This is a strong primary source since it was being written shortly after the founding of several of the counties in this study.
Curley, Edwin A. Nebraska, its Advantages, Resources, and Drawbacks . London: Samson Low, Marston, Low and Searle, 1875.
Good source on what people first found when they settled the state. This was published for a British audience and is geared toward the positive, but does have unusual information.

Many people that go to school in Taylor have parents or grandparents that also went to school here. Our school is very historic. Joseph Rusho was the first person to settle here Taylor with his family. The family included his wife Josephine, and son Treffly Olive. They came to visit Joseph's brother Frank in Fort Hartsuff in Valley County and there they had their second son Robert. In the spring of 1877, they decided to move up stream and settled here in the present day site of Taylor. They had several more children including, George, Eugene, Joseph, Emory, Myrtle, and Maude. Joseph was known as the "Father of Taylor." He was the leader of Loup County politics and civics for thirty years. Joseph also owned a lumberyard. Taylor was named after Edward H. Taylor and his wife Elizabeth O'Bryan. They came and settled in Kent just east of Taylor in 1876. They where friends of the Rushos.

Yutan History
home communities Yutan During the 1800's, families came to Saunders County from Sweden, Germany, Ireland, Czechoslovakia and other countries. Many of these early families enjoyed the Nebraska good life and their ancestors remain in the area today. During WWII, an Ordnance Plant in Mead, Nebraska brought many "outsiders" to the area, and many of the workers decided that Saunders County provided them the quality of life that couldn't be found in many other areas. The railroad played a major role in the development of Saunders County. When the Omaha and Republican Railroad, now the Union Pacific Railroad, extended their railroad line from Valley, Nebraska to Lincoln, Nebraska, they platted a 16 block village called Clear Creek. The name was changed in 1884 to Yutan, in memory of Chief Ietan, Oto-Missouri Indian, who was encamped southeast of the area until 1835. A post office was established at Headland, in 1868, about 3 1/2 miles southeast of today's Yutan. A stagecoach line ran from Fremont to Ashland but the railroad did not follow the same path. The post office relocated to Yutan in 1876.

H I S T O R Y The Oregon Trail Young Adult by Francis Parkman, E.N. Feltskog (Editor) Francis Parkman learns firsthand from the Indiansand not from the remnants of eastern tribes, what Plains Indians are like from his personal journey on the Oregon Trail. It was his own fortitude and perseverance-perseverance under the most grievous physical afflictions-that made it possible for Parkman to see as much of the West as he did, to experience at first hand the life of the explorer and the trapper and hunter, and even of the Indian. And it was his arduous preparation, his intellectual curiosity, his talent for observation, his enthusiasm, his gift for dramatic narrative, that enabled him to reconstruct from his fragmentary Journals what he had seen and to convey it with such youthful exuberance to generations of readers. Nebraska: An Illustrated History by Frederick C. Luebke This work contains fifty-eight short topical chapters on Nebraska history that, when united with the images in this rich gallery of illustrations, present a unique history of the state. Frederick C. Luebke’s lifelong commitment to the study of his state informs the book in every detail, as does his concern for clear and readable narrative. The result is a work that every Nebraskan will want to have, read, and enjoy.
