This site presents the complete text of the 1857 travel diary of Erastus F. Beadle (1821-1894), a man who spent several months in Omaha during the early territorial days. Intimate and well-written, Beadle's diary is among the best first-hand accounts of life in a Western frontier town. Through Beadle's daily entries, we experience the hardships of travel, the ambition and heady optimism of the frontier, the isolation and longing for family, and the day-to-day trials of life "on the border." To Nebraska in 1857 is a book-length document, including an introduction and eighteen chapters. You may want to save the diary to your hard drive and read it offline. Mayor Greetings from the Mayor... Our community is blessed with state-of-the-art medical facilities and an unequaled educational system featuring 14 public elementary schools, three public middle schools, two public high schools, four private schools along with post secondary educational learning opportunities with Central Community College and distance learning at College Park. Grand Island is unquestionably the premier retail shopping hub between Omaha, Nebraska and Denver, Colorado featuring a wide assortment of retail establishments giving Grand Island the second highest retail recapture rate in Nebraska. Located on Interstate 80 and Highways 30 and 281, Grand Island was first pioneered by French fur trappers who coined the city’s name while settling between the two main forks of the nearby Platte River. Our city has a proud heritage from turn of the century Eastern European immigrants. The city prospered during the late 1800s as railroads brought increased traffic and industry to Grand Island. We are a railroad city even today, with major railroad lines Union Pacific and Burlington Northern crossing through the city. First incorporated in 1872, Grand Island now boasts many exciting developments as “The City of Kindness”.

Cronin feels the growth in her work. A veteran frontline worker for Health and Human Services, Cronin has seen her food stamp caseload climb from about 75 households during the prosperous days of the late 1990s to about 100 families currently. In fact, the number of Nebraska households using food stamps hit an all-time high last fall and is still climbing, despite an improving economy.
