New Hands-on Exhibit at the Museum of Nebraska History - the History Adventure Center!
In the History Adventure Center, elementary students will learn about aspects of Nebraska’s social, political, and economic history as they explore four hands-on stations. Under the theme of travel in Nebraska’s history, the History Adventure Center features activities related to four time periods: a Pawnee travois and the summer hunt, a farm wagon and general store, an immigrant train car and train station, and an auto touring car and campsite. Specific activities include putting up a summer tent, preparing and selling your goods at the general store, deciding what to take as you emigrate to Nebraska, and much more! Role play, interactive labels, period clothing, problem solving adventures, and the opportunity to touch history are the hallmarks of this exciting new exhibit. Teacher’s guides are available. The exhibit is designed for fourth graders studying Nebraska history, but would be beneficial to third, fifth, and possibly sixth graders as well.
Please call 1-800-833-6747 or 471-4757 in Lincoln to schedule a tour or find out more.

8. Fort Kearny In Early Nebraska History
Col. Stephen Watts Kearny was ordered to construct a new fort and he chosea site on Table Creek, now Nebraska City. It would be named Fort Kearny.
http://www.nebraskastudies.org/0400/stories/0401_0135.html
Fort Kearny In 1844, the pressures for additional protection for additional whites was growing. The U.S. Secretary of War recommended that a chain of posts be constructed from the Missouri River to the Rocky Mountains to protect the Oregon migration. Col. Stephen Watts Kearny was ordered to construct a new fort and he chose a site on Table Creek, now Nebraska City. It would be named Fort Kearny. The construction of the fort in 1846 at Table Creek, however, was a decision that proved to be a gross error in geographic judgment. The Table Creek site was not on the main route of overland traffic and relatively few emigrants passed nearby. Consequently, the War Department directed that an alternate military station should be established further west near Grand Island where the road to California encountered the Platte River. The second Fort Kearny in 1849. Source - NSHS, RG2102:1-7. In 1847, Lt. Daniel P. Woodbury, an officer in the Corps of Engineers, left Fort Kearny at Table Creek with about 70 men. When he got to the Platte, Woodbury described the site he chose in an official report: "I have located the post opposite a group of wooded islands in the Platte River ... three hundred seventeen miles from Independence, Missouri, one hundred ninety-seven miles from Fort Kearny on the Missouri and three miles from the head of the group of islands called Grand Island."

Vol VI, no 1 (part 4) NEBRASKA HISTORY Shar-i-tar-ish was a principal chief of the Grand Pawnee tribe. He was son of another chief of the same name mentioned as Char-ac-tar-ish by Lieutenant Pike who met him at the Grand Pawnee village on the Republican river in 1806. The subject of this portrait succeeded his elder brother, Ta-re-ca-wa-ho as head chief. The latter was invited to visit the president at Washington, but refused because he thought the Pawnee the greatest people on earth and would not condescend to go in person. He sent Shar-i-tar-ish in his stead. Shar-i-tar-ish was then a young man, six feet tall, well proportioned and of fine appearance. His portrait was made at Washington. Soon after his return he became head chief and died a little later, aged thirty. He was succeeded by Ish-ca-te-pi sometimes spelled Is-ka-tap-pi and called "The Wicked Chief." NEBRASKA HISTORY End of Military Note Book. The last leaves of the record of this journal were evidently lost like those of the beginning. However, as we know that the massacre of the Spaniards took place the day after their meeting with the Optoptata and their allies, there is every ground for supposing that the manuscript ended at the date of August 10, 1720 and that its author was killed the next day.

    Hunters, Explorers, and Fur Traders
Pawnee The French also came and in the 18th cent. engaged in fur trading, but development began only after the area passed from France to the United States in the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. The Lewis and Clark expedition (1804) and the explorations of Zebulon M. Pike (1806) increased knowledge of the country, but the activities of the fur traders were more immediately valuable in terms of settlement. Manuel Lisa, a fur trader, probably established the first trading post in the Nebraska area in 1813. Bellevue, the first permanent settlement in Nebraska, first developed as a trading post.
    Steamboats and Wagon Trains
Steamboating on the Missouri River, initiated in 1819, brought business to the river ports of Omaha and Brownville. The natural highway formed by the Platte valley was used extensively by pioneers going west over the Oregon Trail and also the California Trail and the Mormon Trail. Nebraska settlers made money supplying the wagon trains with fresh mounts and pack animals as well as food.

Page 1 of HOME Long before early French explorers named it the Platte River, for "flat water," this heartland oasis was a crossroads. Migratory birds, abundant wildlife and native Americans were in residence for centuries when the confluence of the Oregon and Mormon Trails led pioneers to the site that would become Kearney. Bound for points further west, some hardy, yet visionary souls saw opportunities along the Platte and they stayed laying the foundation for what would become the Mid-western "work ethic." Now, at the very center of the country, as this great, braided river cuts an arc across the plains, Kearney, Nebraska faces a brilliant future. Page 2 of 2 [ HOME In 1848, a fort was established to provide protection for travelers heading west along the Oregon Trail. Named for Colonel Stephen Watts Kearny, Fort Kearny afforded a safe haven for pioneers, pony express riders, prospectors and others as they followed the great Platte river road. According to an official War Department report, more than 30,000 people bound for California, Oregon and Utah passed through Fort Kearny during an 18 month period during the gold Rush of 1849. Originally built near Nebraska City, the fort was later relocated to its present site, south of Kearney, to increase military strength in the busy central Nebraska corridor. In its 23 years as the first U.S. Army Post on the Oregon Trail, Fort Kearny was never attacked by Indians. The city of Kearney derives its name from the original fort but due to a postal error an "e" was inadvetently added and then never changed Settlement began in the summer of 1871 when the Rev. and Mrs. Collins entered a homestead claim. The couple lived in a dwelling called Junction House which was also the site of the first post office, the first school district, the first marriage ceremony, and the first church service.
