Sutton is a progressive and prosperous rural community of 1,400 residents located in Clay County in South Central Nebraska, 30 miles East of Hastings, 55 miles South and East of Grand Island, and 60 miles North of the Nebraska Kansas border. See our maps page
The area economy is farm, commerce and industry based, with employment primarily dependent upon these components. The population is middle class, homogeneous, stable and family oriented. The City of Sutton is served by a Mayor-Council form of city government. The mayor is elected for a four-year term, while the council members are elected from two wards with staggered four-year terms. The mayor, council members and city administrator meet on the second Tuesday of every month at 8:00 pm. Learn more about our city government
The City of Sutton maintains a City Office located at 122 S Saunders Avenue. The office is open from 8:00 am until 5:00 pm Monday through Friday, and is staffed by a City Administrator, a City Clerk, and a Utility Clerk. The phone number is 402-773-4225.

SANTEE SIOUX TRIBE OF NEBRASKA COMMUNITY ENVIRONMENTAL PROFILE SANTEE SIOUX TRIBAL GOVERNMENT: The United States Government as defined by the United States Constitution has governmental relationships with International, Tribal, and State entities; therefore, Tribal nations have a government-to-government relationship with the United States. The Tribes of the Great Sioux Nation signed treaties in 1824, 1851, 1863 and 1868 with the United States which are the legal documents that established our boundaries and recognized our rights as a sovereign government. The Santee Sioux Tribe operates under a constitution and is governed by a Tribal Council. The Tribal Council consists of a Chairman, Vice-Chairman, Secretary, and a Treasurer and eight additional Councilmen which are elected by the tribal members. The Tribal Council Chairman serves as the administrative head of the tribal government. The Tribal Chairman and Officers serve a one year term and are elected from within the Tribal Council. All of he Tribal Council serve a term of two years and are elected from four districts, Bazil Creek, Hobu Creek, Howe Creek, and Santee. Prior to the inundation of lands along the Missouri River, many of the people lived on the river bottom lands. The entire community of Fort Thompson, schools and a hospital had to be completely relocated to higher ground. The infrastructure, schools and hospitals were never rebuilt as promised.

It was amended in 1982 to ensure that rangeland and farmland could be sold only to a Nebraska family-farm corporation. The executive branch is headed by a governor elected for a four-year term. By constitutional amendment in 1934 the legislature was made unicameral (it is unique in the United States), with 49 members elected on a nonpartisan basis for terms of four years. The state elects three representatives and two senators to the U.S. Congress and has five electoral votes in presidential elections. In 1986, Nebraska's Kay A. Orr became the first Republican woman to be elected governor of a state. E. Benjamin Nelson, a Democrat elected governor in 1990 and 1994, was succeeded by Mike Johanns, a Republican elected in 1998 and 2002. The state's leading institution of higher education is the Univ. of Nebraska, at Lincoln, Omaha, and Kearney. Creighton Univ. is at Omaha.
