The land rises more or less gradually from 840 ft (256 m) in the east to 5,300 ft (1,615 m) in the west. The great but shallow Platte River, formed in W Nebraska by the junction of the North Platte and the South Platte, flows across the state from west to east to join the Missouri S of Omaha. The Platte and the Missouri, together with their tributaries, give Nebraska all-important water sources that are essential to farming in this agrarian state. Underground water sources are also widely used for irrigation. The river valleys have long provided routes westward, and today the transcontinental railroads and highways follow the valleys. From the Missouri westward over about half the state stretch undulating farm lands, where the fertile silt is underlaid by deep loess soil. Nebraska's population is concentrated there; many are farmers who produce grains for the consumer market or for feeding hogs and dairy cattle. In this region also lie Nebraska's two major cities :

NE Nebraska gets its name from an Indian word meaning "flat water" after the Platte River that flows through the state. It became the 37th state in 1867. Nebraska, once considered part of the American desert, is now a leading farming state. Nebraskans have practiced scientific farming to turn the Nebraska desert into a land of ranches and farms. Much of the history of the state is the story of the tough, strong-willed Nebraska farmer. In the 1860s, the first great wave of homesteaders poured into Nebraska to claim free land granted by the federal government. Many of the first farm settlers built their homes out of sod because they found so few trees on the grassy land. Tourists can now drive along highways that follow the historic Oregon and Mormon trails. Almost every county has a fair during the summer and many communities hold annual fall festivals. GOVERNMENT

This fly-over from the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing is informative and gorgeous. There is nothing here that could've been experienced a half-century ago except in a very minor way by a Canadian goose. The homepage has an interactive graphic of Canada, with little red squares to click to go to a location and one little yellow square for the most recent image. The pictures were taken from satellites and the text describes phenomena not seen before imaging was available from space. While something similar to this tour could have been put on a CD-ROM a decade ago, not until the advent of the Internet could the images be kept up-to-date on your desktop from the remote Centre.

    http://www.nde.state.ne.us/SS/framewrk.html
The Nebraska K-12 Social Studies Framework The Nebraska Social Studies Framework project was designed to allow school districts, teachers, curriculum designers and administrators to incorporate social studies concepts and content throughout the K-12 curriculum. As a result the frameworks are not organized along subject headings. Instead a thematic approach was used to allow the widest possible scope for the implementation of the frameworks to each school or districts local curriculum. Social Studies Social Studies is the integrated study of the social sciences and humanities to promote civic competence. Within the school program, social studies provides coordinated, systematic study drawing upon such disciplines as anthropology, archaeology, economics, geography, history, law, philosophy, political science, psychology, religion, and sociology, as well as appropriate content from the humanities, mathematics, and natural sciences. The primary purpose of social studies is to help young people develop the ability to make informed and reasoned decisions for the public good as citizens of a culturally diverse, democratic society in an interdependent world.
