What is the Oregon - California Trails Association?
The Oregon-California Trails Association ( OCTA ) is a private, not-for-profit organization dedicated to the preservation, appreciation, and enjoyment of the trans-Mississippi westward emigrant trails. OCTA works with both government agencies and private landowners to preserve and mark the trails while also helping educate the public about this fascinating period in American history. Each year, we honor those who protect the trails as well as teachers who use innovative methods to teach the history of the emigration. OCTA publishes a variety of materials and maintains a large bookstore of western history resources. Additionally, volunteers have been surveying emigrant documents for several years to construct a computerized database for studying the emigrant experience. The database can also help genealogists locate information about their emigrant ancestors.
Here in Nebraska you'll find outstanding trail history and sites along the routes connecting the Kansas City area with the great American West. We are proud of our history, geography and culture, and we welcome you to our beautiful state.

The largest city in Nebraska is Omaha, and the capital is Lincoln. The state has 93 counties; see List of Nebraska counties. In regional terms, Nebraska is located in the Great Plains, at the westernmost extent of the Grain Belt. The eastern portion of the State can be considered part of the "Midwest", while the western and central portions are part of the "West", although the distinction between these regions is somewhat fluid. Indeed, one of Nebraska's mottos is "Where the West begins", and a local legend even has it that the West begins precisely at the intersection of 13th and O Streets in Lincoln (where it is marked by a red brick star).

W elcome to Nebraska, a land of distinct natural beauty. Prairies extend for miles, pine-covered buttes dot the landscape, endless fields of wheat bend in the breezes, and huge herds of cattle roam on vast grazing lands. I t is easy to visualize the Old West in the land of Nebraska. This is the territory of the Pony Express, the Overland Stage, Boot Hill, the Oregon and Mormon Trails. This is where the mighty Missouri flows, and where the Sioux and the Omaha have flourished. This is where historical figures, like Crazy Horse and Chief Red Cloud, Walter Reed, and Lewis and Clark played out the early history of the American West. The stagecoaches and steam locomotives may be gone today, but the days of trappers and traders, of pioneers and explorers, remain in the spirit of Nebraska. THE NAME: The state of Nebraska is actually named after the Platte River from the French meaning "broad river." The Omaha Indians called the river "ibôápka" also meaning "broad river." In 1842, John Charles Frémont used the word Nebraska in referencing the Platte River and this was the name that was given to the territory when it was created in 1854.

CITY PROMOTES AWARENESS OF GEOGRAPHY AND GIS TECHNOLOGY
Mayor Coleen J. Seng today signed a proclamation declaring this week as “Geographic Awareness Week” in the City. She is also inviting the public to attend an open house to celebrate “National GIS (Geographic Information Systems) Day” November 19. The proclamation was presented this morning at East High School, 1000 South 70th Street. The GIS open house is set for 9 a.m to 3 p.m. Wednesday, November 19 in Room 113 at the County-City Building, 555 South 10th Street. “GIS technology is now used throughout local government and has resulted in greater efficiency and better service,” said Mayor Seng. “The technology is now being used to solve crimes, to design roadways, to locate shopping areas and to find and protect environmentally sensitive areas.” The open house will include demonstrations of how the GIS computer software is used and how information is gathered, prepared for analysis, evaluated and applied. Those attending will be shown how to view GIS information about their neighborhoods through the Internet.

In Lincoln, Nebraska, Police Make Connections Through Geographic Location
The Lincoln Police Department (LPD) uses CrimeView, an ArcView extension, to convert tabular data into geographic visual displays that can generate discussion of current trends, known offenders, suspects, specific crimes, and intelligence. Such crime incident maps graphically reveal where specific kinds of offenses have been concentrated. LPD then strategically deploys officers to target these crime pattern areas. With a metropolitan police department of more than 300 sworn officers and more than 100 civilian employees serving a city with a population in excess of 225,000, it would be understandable if police managers focused on administrative matters such as budget, personnel, local politics, equipment purchases, and revision of department procedures and policies. However, "Police work is about solving crimes, preventing crimes, and protecting the quality of life in neighborhoods," says Tom Casady, chief of police, Lincoln, Nebraska. As far as Chief Casady is concerned, the mission of the Lincoln Police Department (LPD) is crime prevention and reduction, and a focus on these issues by management is essential to success. Chief Casady believes that maintaining focus on the mission requires that the crime fighting expertise and knowledge of his officers be systematically applied to the analysis of crime data. LPD has long believed that its officers on the streets are the best at investigating and clearing cases. As the chief puts it, "He or she is the one who knows the local places and is out there mixing it up with the victims, offenders, convenience store clerks, cab drivers, and street kids." Therefore, when it comes to focusing on crime analysis, the officer "is the one who needs to know that the offense he or she just worked is related to several other reports."
