TO STATE ED BOARD DISTRICT 3 SEAT
Bev Peterson of Oakland announced today that she will not seek re-election to the State Board of Education’s District 3 seat, which represents northeast Nebraska. Peterson, who now serves as State Board of Education vice president, said the decision was difficult. “I’ve enjoyed the challenge of working with the State Board of Education,” she said. “I have worked on education initiatives that will benefit students and schools across our state in the areas of standards, assessment and essential education. Education will always be a top priority in my life.” Peterson said she will continue to spend time with her family, especially her grandchildren, and be an active member of the State Board of Education during the remainder of her term, which ends January 2005. Peterson was first elected to the State Board of Education in 1996. She served as president and vice president during her tenure. She also is on the Board of Directors of the National Association of State Boards of Education.

THE NEBRASKA RELIGIOUS COALITION FOR SCIENCE EDUCATION
Presented to the Nebraska Academy of Sciences in Lincoln, NE, April 25, 2003 by C. Austerberry, Ph.D.
Abstract
Recently adopted science education standards in Nebraska and other states are controversial. Evolutionary explanations for species' origins that incorporate Darwinian mechanisms of random variation and natural selection are deemed incompatible with the creation teachings of Christianity, Islam, and Judaism in the minds of some Americans today, including theists who oppose evolution as well as atheists who oppose religion. However, survey and case study data suggest that most scientists and science teachers view evolution as compatible with religious faith, as do many of the major religions' governing bodies in the United States. The Nebraska Religious Coalition for Science Education (web site: nrcse.creighton.edu ) is a new network of Nebraskans from diverse religious faiths with the shared conviction that academic freedom, religious freedom, and scientific integrity are indeed compatible. It is the NRCSE's position: 1) that evolution is a viable scientific theory, 2) that a Creator is a viable theological proposition, and 3) that creationism ("creation science") and intelligent design theory lack evidence and represent erroneous deviations from the scientific method. The NRCSE recognizes the duty of Nebraska's schools to help students understand the best available science. We believe that evolution can and should be widely taught in a scientifically sound and metaphysically neutral manner.

NUMBER 200 THE NEWSPAPER OF EDUCATION RIGHTS SEPTEMBER 2002 In Nebraska, Pledge Remains 'Under God'
LINCOLN, NE - The eight-member Nebraska Board of Education passed a resolution on August 9 in support of the Pledge of Allegiance as currently written, including the words "under God." Former elementary school teacher and board member, Kathy Wilmot of Beaver City, introduced the resolution, which was unanimously approved by the board without discussion. (See excerpts from text of resolution To preface her introduction, Mrs. Wilmot shared with board members a few comments from one of her constituents. "The American Flag is the symbol of the USA; loved by its bearers, respected by its friends, feared by its enemies," Wilmot quoted, "but this nation's strength does not lie in a piece of red, white and blue cloth. Rather, it lies in the common beliefs our flag represents, including the belief that we are 'one nation, under God.' If we fail to pass these beliefs on to future generations, neither our flag nor the nation she stands for will survive." After the meeting, Mrs. Wilmot expressed satisfaction that the board acted so quickly and decisively to protect the rights of students and educators. "I'm proud that our board is standing with Governor Mike Johanns and Attorney General Don Stenburg in reminding local boards and school districts that the Pledge of Allegiance as written is legal in Nebraska's schools. Students choosing not to participate have that right, but schools should ensure that students and faculty wishing to recite the pledge may continue to do so."

    Overview, Background and Purpose INTRODUCTION:
Established in 1981, the Nebraska LEAD (Leadership Education/Action Development) Program is a statewide agricultural leadership development program designed to develop people. With initial three year grant funding from the W. K. Kellogg Foundation, the program is under the direction of the Nebraska Agricultural Leadership Council, Inc. Initially co-sponsored by representatives of Nebraska agriculture, Agriculture Builders of Nebraska, Inc, and the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, the program is supported today by Nebraska's leading individuals, businesses, organizations and institutions of higher education. Virtually every institution of higher education in Nebraska, both public and private, provide necessary in-kind support as host institutions for twelve in-state seminars. The Nebraska LEAD Program is designed to increase knowledge and understanding of economics and social changes affecting agriculture and rural areas. It strives to develop problem solving, decision making and communication skills and abilities that are necessary for agriculturalists to address today's complex problems. It also encourages practical application of leadership skills and abilities necessary to represent agriculture at all levels.

Restrictive Policy Jeopardizes Health and Lives of American Young People WASHINGTON, DC (April 10, 2001) Advocates for Youth's President, James Wagoner, today calls on the Nebraska Board of Education to support effective comprehensive sexuality education that provides information about both abstinence and contraception. "At a time when one-third of all new HIV infections occur in those under the age of 21, American teens deserve medically accurate, realistic information about sex," said Wagoner. "Anything less, in the era of AIDS, runs contrary to medical research and basic common sense." The Nebraska Board of Education, a school system that stresses abstinence-only-until-marriage education – which censors information about contraception for the prevention of unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted disease, including HIV/AIDS - last week rejected an HIV/AIDS prevention program because it included information about condoms.
