Subject benchmark statements
Subject benchmark statements provide a means for the academic community to describe the nature and characteristics of programmes in a specific subject. They also represent general expectations about the standards for the award of qualifications at a given level and articulate the attributes and capabilities that those possessing such qualifications should be able to demonstrate. This subject benchmark statement, together with the others published concurrently, refers to the bachelors degree with honours Subject benchmark statements are used for a variety of purposes. Primarily, they are an important external source of reference for higher education institutions when new programmes are being designed and developed in a subject area. They provide general guidance for articulating the learning outcomes associated with the programme but are not a specification of a detailed curriculum in the subject. Benchmark statements provide for variety and flexibility in the design of programmes and encourage innovation within an agreed overall framework.

62. Ancient History Program
Our goal is to prepare graduate students for careers of teaching and researchin ancient history, within either a classics or a history department.
http://www.umich.edu/~ipgrh/general.html
General Information The Program in Greek and Roman History is an interdepartmental doctoral program sponsored by the departments of History and Classical Studies. By requiring courses from both of the sponsoring departments our Program emphasizes both competence in the traditional disciplines of classical studies, including ancient languages, and familiarity with the interpretive perspectives and methodologies of historical studies. Our goal is to prepare graduate students for careers of teaching and research in ancient history, within either a classics or a history department. For graduate students in other departments and programs at the University of Michigan our Program offers a Certificate in Greek and Roman history.

63. Ancient History Program
Both the Classical Studies department and the history department are highly rankedin national surveys, and both include distinguished professors who teach
http://www.umich.edu/~ipgrh/faculty.html
Faculty Even though we expect to be able to cover most aspects of Greek and Roman history, at various times certain configurations of professors will highlight particular fields or interests. At the moment a concentration of senior professors means that our Program is especially attractive in Roman history, and in particular in the history of the Roman empire, both early and late. The interests of historians, archaeologists, and papyrologists highlight our strength in the Greek East and the eastern Mediterranean in general. Our Program is also very attractive in the study of Late Antiquity, where it benefits from the addition of courses offered in medieval history, Byzantine history, Islamic history, early Christianity and Judaism, and early Christian and Byzantine art. MA in Ancient History
No. of students each year: This MA degree programme is an intercollegiate degree programme of the University of London. It is designed to be useful either to those interested in beginning research work or to those wanting a further year of study after completing a first degree. Some knowledge of an ancient language is a prerequisite, and means to improve language skills are available in the relevant departments. Candidates who need to improve their knowledge of an ancient language, or learn another one, may take one language-learning course as part of the MA. Most teaching is available inside UCL, but some is held in other colleges of the University; certain subjects (e.g. numismatics) are taught by the staff of the British Museum at the museum. The degree consists of four elements, each comprising 25% of the final assessment:

BA Ancient History and Egyptology (UCAS VQ14)
This degree programme is designed for students wishing to pursue the specialised study of Egyptology within the context of the history of the ancient world. The College is uniquely equipped to offer such a degree, since a first-class Egyptology library and an important study collection of Egyptian antiquities (the Petrie Museum) are housed at UCL. Students take two courses in ancient Near Eastern history (c.3000-330 BC), and at least one course from the list of Group 1 papers in Graeco-Roman history, as well as one course from a range covering Near Eastern and Mediterranean archaeology and history. In Egyptology, students follow courses on Middle Egyptian language (hieroglyphs), a general course on Egyptian civilisation, and two courses on Egyptian archaeology. In the final year students write a 10,000-word essay on Ancient History and/or Egyptology. Please note that because of the specialised nature of this programme, the range of course choice
options is more limited.

The University of Liverpool holds Open Days each year for prospective students who wish to visit the University prior to making the final decision on which institutions to list on their UCAS application form. Programme outline:
The programme enables students either to concentrate on the Greco-Roman world (approaching its history and culture through written and material remains) or to extend the range to include study of the cultures of the ancient Near East. Modules deal not only with political history, but also social and cultural history, eg Women, Society and Population, Greeks and Barbarians. Students interested in ancient literature have the opportunity to study authors such as Homer, the Greek tragedians (Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides), Aristophanes, Virgil, or Juvenal.
The opportunity to include substantial Egyptian and/or Near Eastern elements, taught by a range of specialists, is a particularly distinctive feature of the Liverpool Ancient History degree. The degree also permits different proportions of time to be devoted to historical or archaeological study. There are opportunities to undertake
