46. ODYSSEY/NearEast/Mythology
How do we know about near eastern myths? Most of our information comesfrom clay tablets found in ancient palace and temple libraries.
http://carlos.emory.edu/ODYSSEY/NEAREAST/myth.html
The most popular and earliest cults in the ancient Near East related to fertility. Fertility goddesses, such as Astarte, influenced the growth of crops and the prosperity of the people. Figures like this one were made of clay and mass produced. Some were made by hand, others were created in molds. Perhaps these statues were used in magic rituals or given as offerings to the fertility goddess. Most of the cultures living in the ancient Near East worshipped many gods and goddesses. Aspects of life were explained by the actions of these gods - war, weather, disease, and more were understood as the result of the gods' desires. People thought their gods looked and behaved like they did, but with supernatural powers. Gods usually had beards and wore a horned crown or helmet. They often had their own symbols, too - the crescent and circle represented Sin, the moon god. How do we know about Near Eastern myths? Most of our information comes from clay tablets found in ancient palace and temple libraries. Scribes recorded myths in cuneiform writing. Also, we can see a lot of mythological stories, gods, and goddesses illustrated on cylinder seals.

Epics of Early Civilization: Middle Eastern Myth,
Autumn 1998 (revised 11-12 February 2000) Author's Note: This manifestation of the Divine Feminine, Inanna, also known as Ishtar, Ashtart, Astarte, Asherah (and sometimes identified as Lilith), was at one time honored throughout the Near East. She brought fertility, grace and a woman's wisdom to that ancient world. The later male monotheisms of the region would begin by making her the focus of their bitter hatred as they destroyed her sacred groves, demolished her temples, and strove to disinherit all womankind. [See: Lilith Remembered : a poem by Kathy Robles, added 2 August 2002.] Our planet's Near Eastern region, which includes the so-called "Cradle of Civilization" in the valley between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, is also the flashpoint for the world's only monotheisms. Earth has known countless beliefs and religions, but only three monotheisms; it has known countless tortured power-struggles, but none as savage, pandemic, or self-righteously intractable as those spawned by the monotheisms of the Near East. This page seeks to look at these three siblings, all worshipping the same male deity who gave them a lush Garden and then let them degrade it into Earth's Wasteland, a

A people’s myths are the stories its elders tell its children. Because these stories have developed over time, they convey the collective wisdom of many generations. Considered sacred by those who transmit them, they often contain insights into the human condition that can be appreciated by outsiders. This course explores the many modern methods employed in the study of myth – historical, anthropological and psychological – and experiment in applying these methods to stories selected from African, Biblical, Greek, Indian, Japanese, Mesopotamian, Native American, Norse, Polynesian and Southeast Asian mythology. Greek Mythology: Honors Enrichment Section F 10-11:30, HSSB 4065 The Honors Enrichment Section for Classics 40 (Fall 2003) will focus on deepening and supplementing the regular course in three particular areas: direct engagement with more texts of great importance for Greek mythology (Hesiod’s Theogony and Works and Days ; Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex ; Euripides’ Medea ); fuller exploration of problems of interpretation of myth (especially Freudian psychoanalytic and Lévi-Strauss’s structuralist interpretations); and increased attention to the modern use of Greek myth (through a film, "A Dream of Passion," and reading of Jonathan Shay’s Achilles in Vietnam Students interested in the Honors section need to understand that the subject-matter of Greek mythology is often dark, and if fully appreciated, deeply disturbing. The Medea , and our associated film, "A Dream of Passion," are emotionally devastating treatments of the mythical theme of a mother who kills her own children. Achilles in Vietnam contains powerful, gut-wrenching first-person narratives of the horrors real soldiers have really faced in war, and for this reason I would frankly not recommend this section to anyone who is personally close to someone currently serving in a war-zone.
