Near-Death-Like Experiences by John L. Griffin, PhD Actor Larry Hagman's perspective on life is the polar opposite from that of his famous character, J.R. Ewing, on the popular, long-running Dallas television series. He sums it up at the end of his recent autobiography, Hello Darlin' Evidence of the After-life Not long after Larry disclosed his Near-Death Experience on television, I learned that he would be at the Local Hero Bookstore in Ojai for a book signing. I stopped by to find a diverse group of people in a friendly and almost festive atmosphere in the large patio behind the store. And there was Larry, jovially signing away. I waited my turn in a rather long line and then was face-to-face with an open and engaging man who seemed a lot more like Major Nelson in I Dream of Jeannie than J.R. Ewing on Dallas . Still, there did seem to be a bit of a Texas persona, but a genuinely friendly, down-to-earth one. I got right to the point and asked if I could arrange an interview about his NDE. After briefly explaining World University's Thanatology Program in terms of care for the dying, bereavement counseling, and conscious living and dying - particularly in light of the implications of the Near-Death Experience - he understood and agreed to meet with me. Taking a ten thousand dollar bill from a stack next to him, he wrote his phone number on it, saying "Give me a call." On the face of the bill was a picture of Larry in a ten gallon Stetson hat underneath a banner proclaiming, "The United State of Texas." Alongside was a declaration in smaller letters: "This note isn't worth the paper it's printed on." On the reverse was the motto, "In Hagman We Trust" over a picture of the Southfork Ranch from

    THE CHALLENGE OF NEAR-DEATH EXPERIENCES

    Gracia Fay Ellwood
Lantern Books, New York, NY; 2001 P. M. H. Atwater, L.H.D. P. O. Box 7691 Charlottesville, VA 22906-7691 It is exciting for a researcher such as myself to see a true scholar come forward with the type of interpretative material that begins to build a context for understanding near-death experiences. And especially Gracia Fay, as her background in studies of things paranormal, religious, and spiritual is quite impressive. She makes a case that shamanism and mysticism form important backdrops to the study of near-death episodes. The making of a good shaman (wise one) is almost identical to what happens to typical near-death experiencers; the transmutation of spiritual death into transformed life echoes equally across the traditions of mysticism and the more modern stories of the near-death experience. Uttermost Deep brings us full circle until we are face-to-face with the issue of survival, and the likely possibility that both heaven and hell are real. Gracia Fay gives full weight to hellish near-death experiences while offering the first and final word to joy. No one else has attempted such an in-depth examination of the full spectrum of scenarios reported by near-death experiencers. I, for one, am most grateful to Gracia Fay Ellwood for this invaluable contribution to the field.

Some, if we believe what they tell us , are born with God consciousness. Some struggle to achieve it by strenuous spiritual practice, though by all accounts the success rate isn’t (and never has been) encouraging. I had God consciousness thrust upon me in 1983, my sixtieth year, without working for it, desiring it, or even believing in it, and this has understandably given me a somewhat unusual perspective on the whole matter. In particular, I wonder if discipline isn’t altogether counterproductive in this context and the idea of spiritual growth totally mistaken. Before I had my experience, I was a Freud-style skeptic about all things mystical. I wouldn’t have called myself an atheist or materialist; in fact I’d published extensively on the need for a religious world view appropriate to a humanity that has “come of age” in the scientific and technological area.(1) But I emphasized that such a faith would have to be essentially positivistic, focused on the human potential for creative change, which I believed could become as effective in the social realm as it has been in the physical realm. I even believed it possible that the creative human personality might eventually discover technologies for transcending mortality, but I saw mysticism as a neurotic escape into fantasy, due to failure of nerve in the creative struggle.(2)

How a near-death experience shaped Blanche Blacke's mission to heal violence, enhance creativity, and explore sexual energy
    by Robin Barcus
Conscious Choice, September 2003 It was not difficult to spot Blanche Blacke, singer, performer and modern-day shaman, as she strolled through Lincoln Park to meet me. Her bright blue eyes were ringed with glitter, and her face was painted vivid orange. Her garb was also a bit, ah, unusual for a Thursday afternoon in the park. Clad only in a tiger-stripe bikini, there flowed from her waist an abundance of straw and fabric streamers. Huge chunks of raw citrine encircled her neck like an extra set of teeth. Bands of artificial berries and leaves ringed her arms, and her breasts looked like twin bird nests with berries and foliage attached to her bikini top. Blanche Blacke is the creator and artistic director of the Shakura Ensemble Ritual Theater (SERT) and her costume was donned for an outdoor photo shoot to support their new production, Symphony of Sex. As Blacke led me blithely through the park, a weathered character on a bench hooted at her. She struck a dramatic pose and fired off some New Guinea-style gibberish at him. He responded with laughter and bird calls. When dressed like a spirit dancer, one might as well live the part.

G. Wells ? By John Chambers Not only did novelist and science popularizer H. G. Wells invent modern science fiction with trailblazing novels like The War of the Worlds and The Time Machine . The British working-class writer, who rose to world prominence in the early part of our century, also wrote a number of short stories with themes such as astral traveling, near-death experiences, changing the past to change the present, encounters with angels, and much more. Amazingly, these stories foretold the shape of contemporary 'New Age' paranormal experiences. How is it that Wells, who lived from 1866 to 1946, and was intensely anti-mystical, was able to acquire such prescient details about those wider dimensions of reality which many now believe surround us? He may have had a near-death experience.

I my years of hospice work I have wished for such a book Mr. Boldman has skillfully created a readable, well-researched text that will benefit both clinical professional and lay readers who are interested in learning more about the near-death experience and its impact on the individual. He offers hope and assurance via authentic case studies and research sources. He utilizes story telling techniques that address basic human doubts and fears and in this way reveals the possibility of a pathway to becoming based on love. In my many years of hospice work, I have wished for such a work to share with frightened patients and their families, particularly when they could no longer remain in denial of a terminal diagnosis. There is no doubt that this book will stimulate thought and for many bring comfort as it sharpens their awareness on the journey to knowing. By looking at death, the author brings us full circle to the study of life. Diane Longeway, LMSW, Hospice Team Leader, University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center

Once we understand the science of the near death experience, we will understand the true nature of our own intuition. We will see how this "god module" is responsible for spiritual visions, mind-body healing, angel encounters, paranormal talents, past life memories, and psychic dreams. I will even demonstrate that much of what we feel is UFO contact is actually right temporal perceptions of other realities. This scientific paradigm may result in a cultural paradigm shift that will change our myths about death and can transform our lives.
We will learn that it is not just about a warm fuzzy way to die: Near Death research can save society hundreds of millions of wasted dollars spent on irrational medical procedures currently spent on the dying.

    A Glimpse of Death
By Jean B. Crabbendam When Dr. Raymond Moody wrote Life After Life in 1974 and coined the term near-death experience (NDE), most people had never heard of such a thing. The author was amazed by the worldwide public response to his book and the discovery of thousands who claimed to have had such experiences. The subject was taken up and popularized by the media, and there is now an active International Association of Near-Death Studies. Among Moody's readers was a young pediatrician, Melvin Morse, who later cared for a young drowning victim. He feared she would either die or suffer brain damage, but after days in a coma she awakened, bright as a button, and told him where she had been and what she had seen. Intrigued, the doctor began a serious study of NDE that has continued for a decade. He decided to record NDEs of children since it had never been done and he had access to documents listing youngsters who had undergone near-fatalities. His best-selling Closer to the Light (1990) recorded the results and, like Moody, he was astonished by the volume of letters and interview requests that poured in.

    By Linda B. Bolido

    Famed seven lakes
IT didn't exactly die, but the transformation of Sampaloc Lake - the biggest of San Pablo's famed seven lakes and is right at the heart of the city - is almost as glorious as a rebirth.
What the lake actually went through was more of a near-death experience. And like in other near-death experiences, the people of San Pablo saw the light and decided to turn things around.
Initiated by private individuals, who organized themselves into the Samahan ng Pitong Lawa (SPL), the campaign to resuscitate and revitalize Sampaloc has drawn the support of the city government, the church and religious groups, and the fisherfolk who live and work around the lake.
So far, the campaign has managed to have restaurants and beer houses around the lake removed. Fish cages that occupied about 35 percent of the 104-hectare lake had been reduced to about 26 percent as of 2000. As the stench of garbage and dead water flora and fauna disappeared, promenaders returned. Seven small parks and a playground replaced the restaurants and beer houses.

Stories from patients, other medical professionals and personal experience round out the sample from which this information on near-death experiencers have been taken. Methodology Dr. Morse uses personal experiences that have been reported to him by patients, as well as reports by other medical professionals to provide him with the research tools that he uses to write this book. He suggests too, that because these stories have been reported to him and he has a biased belief in the near-death experiences that are reported to him in this book, that this may give the material a “bent” toward his beliefs. Abstract In this book, Dr. Morse reports on experiences considered by some to be “mystical” in nature. He reports on dreams that patients have had that have foretold their deaths to themselves and family. He tells of near-death experiences where the experiencer actually meets long-ago-deceased family members and then come back with verifiable detail to support their case. He also reports on cases of SIDS and how, often, the mother or father will have a “feeling” or “dream” that tells them that the infant is going to die even before it happens. Most importantly, Dr. Morse presents ways to make the end of a loved-ones life full of dignity and love rather than full of doubt and shame. The chapters covered in the book include:

    Spiritual Travel
A Spiritual Approach to Out-Of-Body Experience
This site introduces the concept of spiritual travel . Spiritual travel is a form of out-of-body experience done voluntarily to achieve a spiritual goal. In order to have an out-of-body experience, the soul or consciousness of the individual must temporarily leave the physical body. During out-of-body experience, the physical senses shut down. When this occurs, an entirely new world opens up to the individual. Spiritual travel is a special type of out-of-body experience where the individual's awareness is heightened, and he or she is able to make decisions and direct the experience. The spectrum of experience afforded by spiritual travel is very broad and can include a wide variety of psychic and spiritual states. In most cases, the spiritual traveler is able to clearly remember the experiences and learn from them. Spiritual travel is sometimes called transcendent or ecstatic experience because it deals with the "inner" senses rather than the physical senses. It also deals with states of being seemingly independent of the physical world. The Purpose of Spiritual Travel The goal of spiritual travel is mystical or transcendent religious experience. The reason for an interest in spiritual travel is that it provides a unique means of approaching these distant and extraordinary states of religious awareness. It does this by exposing the spiritual seeker to a series of lessons about the nature of identity, and the freedom of the soul to travel in various non-physical environments. These lessons gradually introduce the spiritual traveler to a variety of psychic and spiritual states containing increasing degrees of individual freedom, and spiritual awareness. In addition, spiritual travel provides an inner laboratory where the seeker can experiment with techniques and methods of moving through the more limited psychic states of awareness and into these distant spiritual realms.

    Changing Identities in Spiritual Travel
Everyone knows what it is like to be embodied living in the physical world from day to day. In what ways does the individual's identity, self-concept, and body image vary during spiritual travel? One fascinating aspect of spiritual travel is the ability to shift from one's normal body image to a different form. Taking on an identity or form different from one's normal body image happens on occasion during spiritual travel. It sometimes happens spontaneously and advanced practitioners can probably choose to create a new body image through visualization. Some claim that those who reside in the more ethereal places seem to use this ability to change shape as a form of artistic creativity. They are said to be able change bodies the way we in the material world change clothes. An example of a change in body image can be found in the section on shape-shifting at this site. However, it is more common to find one's self with little or no bodily sensation thus creating the sense of having no body at all than to shift shapes. One of the basic lessons learned during spiritual travel is that the soul can take many forms and identities when outside the body. However one generic thing that happens repeatedly is the soul or individual becomes a kind of energy or vibration. The qualities of this difficult to describe "energy based identity" differ much like the varying qualities of color and texture differ on the surface of a body of water such as a lake. The surface of the water changes so much depending on the kind of wind and the quality of the natural light as it reflects off the surface.
