Mysticism
Mysticism is the belief that knowledge of God or Ultimate Reality can (only) be gained through personal experience. Table of contents showTocToggle("show","hide") 1 Individual experience of God 2 Introspective experience of Reality 3 Mysticism is unifying in nature 4 On the difficulty of defining mysticism ... 8 External links Individual experience of God In theistic pantheistic , and panentheistic classical pantheist/cosmotheist metaphysical systems this is most often understood as individual experience with God or in some cases, Goddess . Thomas Aquinas defined it simply as "cognitio dei experimentalis." The experiences are very subjective, and they are related to others as visions, dreams, revelations, prophecies, and so forth. Introspective experience of Reality In philosophy , the term Perennial Philosophy is used, and relates to a primary concern "with the one, divine Reality substantial to the manifold world of things and lives and minds. But the nature of this one Reality is such that it cannot be directly or immediately apprehended except by those who have chosen to fulfill certain conditions, making themselves loving, pure in heart, and poor in spirit," ( Aldous Huxley ). Some mystics use the term to refer to a manner wherein the mystic plumbs the depths of the self and reality in a radical process of meditative self-discovery to discover the "true nature of reality" experientially. This can happen with or without the assistance of drugs.

The Out-of-the-Body Experience (OBE) A particular type of OBE, the Near-Death Experience (NDE),
  • The individual, having come to the crisis of his illness, realises that he has died - perhaps by hearing his death pronounced by a doctor. He finds himself at peace and free of pain - he is released from the earlier bodily stress and turmoil. An out of the body experience develops. He finds himself, perhaps, looking down on the hospital staff still struggling to resuscitate him. Moving away from the death scene, he enters a long dark tunnel and rapidly moves towards a light shining at the end of the tunnel. At the end of the tunnel, in a beautiful light-filled environment, he is met and welcomed by a group of people among whom there are usually relatives who have predeceased him. He is then met by a being of light, a being full of love, compassion and understanding. This being, through non-verbal communication, leads him through an evaluation of his life, including a detailed panoramic playback of the events which had affected others. He is told by the being that he has to return to life on earth as there is more work to be done there. He may try to resist this but is involuntarily drawn back into his body and returns to normal consciousness.

Oxford, Oxford University Press, 1987. 275 Pp. $18.95. Christian versions of this ancient phenomenon, the near-death experience narrated as an other world journey, go back at least to the vision of St. Paul when he was "caught up into the third heaven" (II Cor. 12:1-4). Currently, near-death narratives are attracting remarkable academic interest from neurologists, neuro-psychologists, psychologists, and psychoanalysts as well as anthropologists and students of religion. This is to say nothing of the fascination these stories hold for readers of popular religious literature. Zaleski writes, "to refuse the challenge to interpret near-death literature is only to widen the gap between academic theology and popular religious concerns." Carol Zaleski is a lecturer on the study of religion at Harvard University and this volume, originally her Harvard dissertation, is a carefully argued, insightful, and readable revision of the original manuscript. It includes sixty pages of notes and references that are available for the further pursuit of this research, which Zaleski wants to encourage. The first to put these experiences in historical perspective, this study begins with an overview of the otherworld journey as it has recurred throughout the world's religious traditions and especially as it has appeared in Western Christian history from the sixth to the early thirteenth century. In Zaleski's view, this historical period is comparable to our own, because, in such documents as

Occasionally they are referred to as states of altered consciousness (see Altered States of Consciousness ). Such states may involve ineffable awareness of time, space, and physical reality. Mystical experiences often defy physical description, and can best be only hinted at. Such experiences are universal and share common characteristics, despite the culture or religion in which they occur. They are invariably spiritual, yet they may not be religious; that is, they are not limited to monks or priests. However, all personal religious experiences are rooted in mystical states of consciousness, and all mystical experiences are part of religions. Although mystical experiences are common in occurrence, they occur unbidden to a person perhaps once or twice in a lifetime, if at all. According to a survey in 1987 conducted by the National Opinion Research Center in Chicago, 43 percent of adult Americans said they had some type of mystical experience. In British polls published in 1978 and 1979 in the Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion , 56 percent of churchgoers claimed they had such an experience. Those within this group who had more experiences were older; better educated, and attended church more.

    The ``New Age'' Trap
In a Zen parable a man searches for a lost object. He is crawling on his hands and knees when a friend approaches him. ``What are you doing?'' The friend asks. ``I am looking for something that I lost,'' he replies. ``Where did you lose it?'' the friend asks. ``Over there,'' the man says, pointing to a nearby place. ``Then why are you looking over here?'' ``Because the light is better here,'' the man replies. Many Reform Jews are searching for God in a place where the light is rumored to be better - at the intersection of beliefs, philosophies, and techniques called ``New Age'' religion. If you visit a Barnes and Nobel superstore, you will see what much of American religion has become. There are three bookcases for Judaism; three bookcases for general religion and Christianity; three for general inspiration; two each for Bible, eastern philosophy, and myth; and nine bookcases for New Age. The New Age menu is diverse, including spiritualism, astrology, and psychic phenomena; alchemy, tarot, goddess worship, and Wicca (witchcraft); out-of-body experiences, near-death experiences, and reincarnation; angels, Satanism, and the occult; the channeling of spiritual energy and faith healing; yoga and transcendental meditation; holistic health; unorthodox psychotherapeutic techniques; and healing crystals. New Age follows the time-hallowed American proclivity for creating new religions. It has been called ``microwave'' religion - instant karma.

    ..in a sacred act!
New insights have emerged in the last 30 years:
In 1977 Ilya Prigogine received a Nobel Peace Prize in Chemistry for The Theory of Dissipative Structures. When certain elements are put together in whole systems and then subjected to stress, the parts intelligently re-organise into a new whole and the system escapes into a higher order His findings bridged the critical gap between biology and physics - the missing link between living systems and the supposedly lifeless universe in which they arose. It explains irreversible processes in Nature - the movement towards higher and higher orders of Life. This was further proof that we have a rich, creative Universe that is intelligent and has an inherant self-ordering component and quality. Ilya Prigogine's Theory of Dissipative Structures can be likened to a "flowing wholeness", that is highly organised but always in process and that nature is in actuality saturated with order and equilibrium. Since the 1980's - ' Chaos Theory ' and ' Fractals ' have become very recent scientific studies of open systems. Qualities found within Mandelbrot fractals have been shown to have a self- ordering component in them too.

Despite a renewed interest in text study, many Reform Jews equate spiritual with non-intellectual. "I feel Jewish" has replaced "I know Jewish." Thought and the pursuit of knowledge are being sacrificed on the altar of affect. The author Flannery O' Connor has written: "One of the effects of modern liberal Protestantism has been gradually to turn religion into poetry and therapy, to make truth vaguer and more and more relative, to banish intellectual distinctions, to depend on feeling instead of thought, and gradually to come to believe that God has no power, that he cannot communicate with us, cannot reveal himself to us, indeed, has not done so and that religion is our own sweet invention." Her warning applies to all liberal religions. THE "NEW AGE" TRAP

He is not aligned with any particular religion or doctrine or guru; his teaching embraces the heart, the essence, of all other traditions, and contradicts none of them. He is able to do what all the great masters have done: to show us, in simple and clear language, that the way, the truth, and the light is within us. Where God Lives : The Science of the Paranormal and How Our Brains are Linked to the Universe > Customer Review #1: Cosmic consciousness from NDE perspective

This book consists of a series of case studies into Near Death Experiences (NDEs) and identifies the right temporal lobe as the place where the individual interfaces with a greater consciousness. The author calls this "the God spot" and claims that this region is instrumental in facilitating mind-body healing, is responsible for mystical visions, psychic powers and vivid spiritual experiences. His study of NDEs has revealed that we have the biological potential to interact with the universe at any time in our lives. It is thus important to learn how to activate the right temporal lobe. The authors studies demonstrate that children who have had NDEs are more balanced in their physical, mental and spiritual lives. They feel a purpose in living and do not fear death. Trusting their intuition, they feel that they can again connect with the divine presence without brushing with death again.

    Philip Berman
    Pocket Books 12/96 Hardcover $22.00
ISBN 067150245X This book is based on his view that "spiritual experiences are the bedrock of meaningful living." In this fine book, the Harvard theologian sums up his findings after hundreds of interviews with individuals who have survived near-death experiences. He discovered seven "gifts" emanating from these experiences, including reassurance about the existence of God, faith in the reality of life after death, gratitude and joy, a powerful sense of the unity of life, and spiritual transformation. Many of these same gifts of grace come to those who have had mystical experiences. Berman concludes with a meditation on the spiritual practices of reverence, compassion, wonder, hospitality, and mystery. Search our reviews database This touches on:

Of course, it is difficult to determine what exactly is philosophical in this area, but I will do my best. The resources on this page do not pretend to be a comprehensive list of what is on the Internet. Instead, I have collected some of the more useful sites for teaching and research. Many of these pages are quite comprehensive, and will lead to many other resources. Feel free to contact me for further additions.
I have not included links to the extensive resources on non-Western traditions of mysticism. This is mostly because the course that this page is a resource for is limited to Western mysticism. It also reflects my own lack of experience with non-Western mysticism. In no way does it suggest that Western mysticism is somehow better, more worthy of study, or anything like that.
