THE POLITICS OF MYSTICISM
Perhaps the most problematic issue confronting transpersonalists is the veracity of inner experiences. For many involved in new religious groups mystical encounters, like near-death and out-of-body excursions, offer evidence of their respective guru's rightful position or succession. This has been especially acute in several Sant Mat related groups, particularly Kirpal Singh's Ruhani Satsang, where mastership disputes are often resolved by resorting to one's inner meditation experiences. But there is a rub in all this that for the most part lies uninspected by those newly initiated. No doubt a religious devotee may use such experiences as proof for the authenticity of his/her guru or group, but what he/she fails to realize is that there are thousands, if not millions, of people who also claim personal revelations which convince them of the truthfulness of their chosen path. Even Elvis has hundreds of devotees who see his radiant form at the end of a long dark tunnel when they undergo a near-death experience. So if someone in Memphis can see Elvis in their meditation, are we then supposed to believe in the spiritual mastership of Elvis? Don't get me wrong, I am the first to admit that the King had some great songs during his career, but just because a crew of devoted fans have glimpses of him in the alleged after-life does not constitute documented proof of his spiritual attainment. What is the primary difference between a fundamentalist Christian and a mystically inclined yogi, especially when it comes to evaluating their ultimate truth claims? Both think they have uncovered the truth. The former by the revealing "Word" of the Bible; the latter by the manifesting inner "Word" of the higher regions. Yet, in both cases, the neophyte is subject to doubt, to skepticism, to deception, since revelations of truth (both inner and outer) are manifold. The Muslims have their Koran; the Sikhs have their Guru Granth Sahib; and the Christians have their Bible. And, for the mystics, yogis, and sages who turn inward what do we find? The Hare Krsnas' see Lord Krishna; the Saivites see Lord Shiva; and Ruhani Satsangis (depending upon your affiliation) see Sant Darshan Singh, or Sant Thakar Singh, or Sant Ajaib Singh.

Near Death Experiences... They're a Fact
by Julia Mossbridge
May 2003 During his coma, Fanning had a near-death experience through which it was revealed that he had to re-arrange his life. He learned he had to get his life in line with what really matters, which he says has something to do with "Trying not to hurt others, regardless of the rationalizations your ego presents to you for why they deserve it." From that point on, Fanning began listening to his conscience, ignoring his ego, and began studying mysticism. Near-death experiences (ndes) may be a mystical phenomenon, but 21st century science now has enough data to draw the conclusion that the Golden Rule is actually a law of nature. A 2001 study published in the respected medical journal Lancet dispelled one of the most common explanations for ndes by proving that none of the people who experienced them shared any common drug treatments, physiological symptoms, or psychological viewpoints. Despite having so little in common, most people who have had ndes reported similar "life-changing insights, heightened intuition, and disappearance of a fear of death." Some of them can reliably recount events that occurred when they were clinically dead. Many of them say that during their experience, they became aware that to hurt another is to hurt oneself. So there you go: scientific evidence for "Do Unto Others." This is not the only study weighing in on the validity of ndes. There's at least one peer-reviewed journal

This book will keep you on the edge of your seat. This book will keep your heart racing from beginning to end. It was all I could do not to look in the back of the book to see if the main characters lived or died permanently. The author definitely has spiritual insight of the hereafter. This was a very enjoyable book. After reading this book I started looking for other books written by Mark Littleton. He is an amazing author. IS THERE LIFE AFTER DEATH?
THE BEST BOOKS
Selected and reviewed by James Park, existential philosopher.
Listed in order of quality, beginning with the best. 1. Corliss Lamont The Illusion of Immortality (New York: Philosophical Library, 1959) 303 pages A philosopher examines the history of belief in life after death,
the religious traditions that include various forms of after-life,
the arguments for and against all such beliefs,
and ultimately concludes that there is no life beyond the grave.
A well-reasoned and well-written book, easy to read and understand.
Lamont draws on science and reason to refute the beliefs in immortality.
This book affirms life, despite the fact that our lives must end. 2. Hans Kung Eternal Life?
Life After Death as a Medical, Philosophical, and Theological Problem (Garden City, NY: Doubleday, 1984) 271 pages One of the most intelligent theologians of the 20th century
takes on an age-old problem: death.
Kung does not agree that near-death experiences have any bearing on life after death. He is well aware of what philosophers have said about death

Science and Religion: Near-Death Experiences and Belief in the Afterlife April 16, 1992 INTRODUCTION Belief in an afterlife has been with us for centuries. The Egyptians made elaborate preparations for the journey of the dead to the afterlife. The Tibetan’s have their Book of the Dead which gives instructions and guides one through the perils encountered on the journey from death to new life. Christian’s may believe in a life in Heaven or Hell after death. Some Buddhists believe in a life after death in the Pure Land of Amida Buddha. In fact most cosmologies throughout the ages have had some belief in an afterlife. This paper reviews beliefs regarding the time after death and proposes that near death experiences may be a way to scientifically study and validate a belief in life after death. We begin by looking at what happens at death. Davis (1989) presents four possible answers to that question. He defends the resurrection model where the physical body dies, but is later raised form the dead by God to live again (pp.viii-ix). Kelsey (1982) presents data in support of a belief in the afterlife from various sources such as Swedenborg and other persons with near- death experiences including Carl Jung. Russell and Nielsen present the belief that there is no God, therefore no afterlife. From here we go to the actual accounts and research of near- death experiences. First Kenneth Ring (1980) validates Raymond Moody’s (1975) original reports of NDEs with a focus on the core experience, religiousness of the subject, and the changes that occur after the NDE. Gibbs (1985) then evaluates recent research by Ring and Sabom to support Moody’s interpretation that NDEs represent a separation of the mind from the body at death rather than Siegel’s assertion that NDEs are a dissociative hallucination (pp. 72-78). Next C-reyson presents a psychodynamic explanation of NDEs that may be heuristically valuable in prompting more research.

Mysticism And Psychosis by Melissa Becktel
Psychotic and religious experiences have been associated since the earliest recorded history. The Old Testament uses the same term in reference to madness sent by God to punish the disobedient, and to describe the behavior of prophets (Rosen, 1968). Socrates declared, "Our greatest blessings come to us by way of madness, provided the madness is given us by divine gift." (Dodds, 1951, p. 61). A fundamental issue that has kept religion and the clinical fields in relatively separate compartments is the concern among clinicians that religiosity can be associated with a variety of mental disorders, especially schizophrenia. Many of the symptoms associated with acute schizophrenia and schizotypal personality disorder, such as delusion and hallucinations, are often expressed in religious form (Smith, 1982). The nature of schizophrenia, and other forms of psychosis, is still under debate and a significant issue is the relationship between psychosis and the mystical, or religious, experience. A number of empirical studies have pointed to negative relationships between religious conservatism and various dimensions of individual mental health (Dreger, 1952). In order to discover the relationship between the two, we must first direct our analysis to defining mystical experience and psychosis individually.
Defining Mysticism In my research, the following characteristics emerged repeatedly as each author attempted to define mystical experience: experience of unity, intense affective experience, time/space distortion, noetic quality, ineffability, and a sense of holiness or sacredness. These experiences typically lasted one to three hours. In addition, the authors generally included the concept of universality in their definitions.
