Dream Lucidity and Near-Death Experience: A Personal Report JOHN WREN-LEWIS Clovelly, New South Wales, Australia Attempts to investigate correlations between the incidence of lucid dreaming and near-death experiences (NDEs) have so far been inconclusive ( Lucidity Letter , Vol. 1, Nos. 2 and 3, 1982). The following are some observations following my own NDE in November, 1983, which suggests a new approach. My NDE itself, which I have described elsewhere (Wren-Lewis, 1985), lacked almost all the dramatic features emphasized in the now voluminous literature on the subject (Lundahl, 1982). I had no "out-of-body" vision of myself in the hospital bed, no review of my life, no experience of hurtling through a tunnel towards a heavenly landscape and no encounter with supernatural figures urging me to return to bodily existence. I simply dissolved into an apparently spaceless and timeless void which was total "no-thing-ness" yet at the same time the most intense, blissful aliveness I have ever known. I still slip back into that old clouded state frequently, but this is not a process of "coming down." What happens is something I would have found unbelievable had I heard of it second-hand—namely, I again and again simply forget about the pearl of great price. I drift off into all kinds of preoccupations, mostly trivial, and become my old self, cut off from the Void-Background. Then, after a while, there begins to dawn on me a sense of something missing, at which point I recall the Void and usu-ally click back into the new consciousness almost immediately, with no effort at all.

Introduction
The various elements of the experience can be replicated by electrical stimulation studies of the temporal lobe or by hallucinogenic drugs. It is possible that hallucinogenic neurotransmitters play a role in the NDE. Wish fulfillment, death denial, dissociative psychologic trauma, and other psychologic defense mechanisms have been advanced to explain the experiences. Regardless of cause, the experiences are apparently transformative, resulting in decreased death anxiety, heightened spiritual perceptions and awareness, increased subjectively perceived psychic abilities, and decreased symptoms of depression and anxiety. Adults who had NDEs as children describe themselves as living mentally and physically healthy lives, even donating more money to charity than control populations. For the past 100 years, there has been intense interest in the scientific community and by the general public in scientific verification and validation of spiritual experiences.

Only through ignorance and delusion do men indulge in the dream that their souls are separate and self-existent entities. The NDE and Afterlife Realms
Kevin Williams' research conclusions If you want to know a little bit about what life after death is like, pay close attention to your dreams . There is a lot of circumstantial evidence suggesting that the mental realm of your dreams is identical to the afterlife realms described in near-death accounts. Both describe the realm of the mind, soul, and spirit. In the realm of the mind, all things are possible. Life after death means freeing yourself from all physical limitations and fully inhabiting the realm of thought and spirit. Here, it is what one thinks that is important. It is a realm where thoughts are deeds and we are what we think. If a person reads enough near-death accounts, it is possible for them to create a kind of heavenly roadmap that describes the soul's journey after death. Throughout recorded history, science and religion has revealed an ultimate reality made up of 10 separate components. Here is the evidence: The case for 10 or more afterlife realms (a) Quantum physicists, using

Along with the NDE testimonies, I provide supporting information from the Bible, early Christian and Jewish writings, and historical information for people who seek answers to critical questions concerning particular controversial orthodox Christian doctrines which have been problematic for many people throughout history. Near-Death Experiences
A reader of my WWW pages suggested that I write on near-death experiences. I do not know a lot about this subject, nor am I particularly interested in it. But, I do have a couple of comments, which may be worth thinking about. People sometimes claim that they have caught a glimpse of Heaven (never Hell?) when they almost die (a few were actually declared dead, and then came back to life). They claim to have seen a bright light, and maybe amorphous human-like beings. When you die (or almost die), it is almost always because of lack of oxygen to the brain. Heart attack, bleeding, drowning, and most other causes of death all result in lack of oxygen to the brain. In that situation, you are a prime candidate for hallucinations. I would not trust what you reported, once you are revived. Certainly, near-death (like less dramatic recoveries) is likely to be a religious experience. But I don't think you were temporarily in Heaven. Sorry. Addendum: I received this in response to the above. It doesn't seem to be a near-death experience, but instead is either a joke or a halucination along with typical new age mysticism:

Individual experience of divinity
In theistic pantheistic , and panentheistic classical pantheist/cosmotheist metaphysical systems, mystical experience is most often understood as individual communion with a god or goddess Thomas Aquinas defined it simply as cognitio dei experimentalis . These experiences are very subjective, and they may be experienced as visions, dreams, revelations, prophecies, and so forth.
Introspective experience of reality
In philosophy , the term Perennial Philosophy is used, and relates to a primary concern -
with the one, divine reality substantial to the manifold world of things and lives and minds. But the nature of this one reality is such that it cannot be directly or immediately apprehended except by those who have chosen to fulfill certain conditions, making themselves loving, pure in heart, and poor in spirit.

Many neardeath accounts reveal that the religions of this world are merely an external path whose ideal is to lead people inward toward true spirituality. The NDE and Religion
Kevin Williams' research conclusions Many near-death accounts reveal that the religions of this world are merely an external path whose ideal is to lead people inward toward true spirituality. People often confuse religion with spirituality. Religion is the outward form of worship and spirituality is the inward form of worship. People who have a near-death experience often return less religious and more spiritual. An example of the spiritual change that often takes place in near-death experiencers can be found in Tom Harpur's excellent documentary entitled Life After Death . In it, he profiles a minister named Ken Martin who had a near-death experience. Upon his return from his experience, he discovered that everything he had previously known - his ministry, his calling, everything - was insignificant in comparison to his experience with the afterlife. Heaven is not about religious beliefs, but about spiritual actions. It is not true, as some people believe, that we get to heaven by giving verbal assent to belief in God. It is love, not religious doctrines, that creates spiritual growth. Religions are cultural institutions but love is universal.

the experience to an investigation of the phenomenon, a switch in focus that will enable us to address aftereffects as well as episodes. The proverbial "rest of the story" is as critical for children as for adults, with the same abundance of positives and negatives. The following is a case in point: I was very small when I had my near-death experience. When I could run and play like the other kids again, I'd go from room to room. I'd look under the beds, in the closets, behind the doors and furniture from the top of the house to the bottom other people's houses, too. I'd look and look, but I never found them. They loved me. I know they did. They were warm and wonderful and bright with light. They came to me when I died and they left when I breathed again. I looked for years and years. Sometimes I'd curl up underneath my bed and cry. Why couldn't I find them? Where did they go? Why did they leave me in a place where no on cared and no one loved me? Was I that bad that they couldn't return? Lynn described in detail what it was like to be resuscitated. Among other things, she heard a man say, "Hit her again," as a jolt of current rocked here body. The jolt was so painful she tried to scream, but couldn't. Blackness came. Hours later she awoke hooked up to a myriad of tubes, unable to speak but fascinated by shadows moving among the medical staff. She came to realize these shadows were people who had died there. It didn't take long before she could watch "death" take place, could see the soul as it exited the body. Hospitalized for a month, she was released earlier than planned, because she talked so much to people who had died and to the misplaced souls, that her doctor was convinced she would go crazy if she stayed any longer.

Strange Encounters:
Near-Death Experiences and Birth Memories By John A. Speyrer
O n one day in the summer of 1994, my mailbox contained notices of two interesting upcoming conferences. One will be better known to readers of this newsletter than the other. That notice concerned the International Primal Association's convention which began at the end of August of that year. The second conference was to be held in Seattle during the month of June and was sponsored by the Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal (CSICOP), who are publishers of the Skeptical Inquirer magazine. The conference theme was "The Psychology of Belief.'' This was an apt theme since discussions were planned on various topics including, Alien Abductions, The Reliability of Memory, Conspiracy Theories and A History of UFOs. If the past conferences are any guide, the convention participants will spend their time critically and skeptically analyzing these subjects. It would have been more rewarding if the committee, in studying how belief systems are formed and how memory cannot be relied upon, would also have examined what possible commonalties exist between the UFO abduction experience and another experience which all of us have undergone at our beginnings Astronomer Carl Sagan gave the keynote address at the CSICOP conference last year. To avoid possible embarrassment, I am sure that no mention was made that Sagan had earlier proposed a theory to explain another bugaboo of the committee, the near-death experience. Dr. Sagan presented his theory in a book on neurology which he entitled

Introduction There are many thousands of articles on the internet relating to mysticism, but much fewer on the psychological origins of this spiritual/religious phenomenon. The most common definition of mysticism is the consciousness of the transcendent or ultimate reality or God or the experience of such communion with God or with lesser spiritual beings. Neuropsychologist Michael A. Persinger defines the word simply as the "God experience." My interest in mysticism began In the early sixties when I attended a religious retreat called the Cursillo. It was purportedly a course of instruction in the Catholic faith, but turned out to be a form of emotionally deep religious conversion experience aimed at returning fervor into the spiritual lives and spousal relationships of its participants. The two day week-end "course" began on Friday night when our sponsors personally delivered us to the Cursillo Center. This had made it difficult for the participants to change their mind about the week-end course they had agreed to attend!
