Navy Lakehurst Historical Society, Inc is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the distinguished heritage of Naval Air Station Lakehurst, located in Lakehurst, New Jersey, USA. Why? Although NAS Lakehurst will forever be remembered as the site of the Hindenburg disaster, many other significant events have taken place here. The rigid airships Shenandoah Los Angeles and Akron all called the station home, as did many U.S. Navy blimps. The station was the western terminus for the commercial transatlantic flights of the German dirigibles Hindenburg and Graf Zeppelin. In addition to NAS Lakehurst's rich airship history, the station has served as a center for research into aircraft ejection seats and carrier aircraft launch and recovery techniques. The base's mission continues today as the Naval Air Engineering Station (NAES), Lakehurst

View of the Vieques' sea from "Monte David" one of the most polluted places in the island. The pollution has been caused mainly by depleted uranium bullets. The crosses represent all the Viequenses that have died or have been harmed as a consequence of the Navy occupation. (Note: The holes in the reefs are craters caused by the bombings. Corals take thousands of years to grow.) Taken on 30 December 1999 around 10 A.M.
Note: Vieques' trainings do not help at all in the fight against terrorism. The horrible events of September 2001 do not justify the use of Vieques as a bombing range.
Why should I care about this?

85. History Of U.S. Naval Uniforms And Insignia

http://users.sisna.com/justinb/
Welcome
to the History of U.S. Naval Uniforms and Insignia web pages. These pages are intended to create a WWW reference-point for those interested in what the men and women of the United States Navy have worn over the years. As I have found information on current naval dress more readily available, the primary emphasis here will be on the historical aspects of the uniform. Check the links page for better resources on today's U.S.N. uniforms. Since a study of uniforms depends upon understanding the various ranks they represent, a section on Naval Ranks is also included here. As I am mostly interested in the history and evolution of naval uniforms, I lack much of the detailed knowledge that collectors have about the various uniform items. The illustrations in these pages are inteded to give an idea of how the insignia were worn and to assist in identifying old uniforms, but shouldn't be considered accurate renderings of actual uniform items. Fortunately, militaria expert Howard G. Lanham M.D. has shared some of his collection with me, so I can now offer images of real uniform items.

Abstract
Though an enduring fiscal crisis imperils the future of all U.S. Navy libraries, one small, but dynamic project demonstrates the resilience of library scientistseven when they are confronted with the specter of library closings. In the post-cold war era of reduced defense budgets, there are fewer Navy libraries available to support the missions of geographically distributed users. Since 1991, the number of special Navy librariesmedical and academichas declined by 25%. This number could be headed for an even steeper decline. Call it consolidation, realignment, or right-sizing, the result is that most sailors, marines, and federal workers are no longer within a lunch-time commute of professional library services and a locally-developed collection. Yet, the Navy's voracious appetite for information continues to grow, particularly for technically-oriented reports, journals, and publications. While this article will examine the underlying technologies, including the middleware that parses user queries and monitors user activity (statefulness), it is the emerging library business process model, its implications, and potential scalability that the authors find most provocative.

Last update:06/11/2004 03:10 MSK Russia World Science and Culture Editorial ... About Pravda.RU:Russia:More in detail US Navy to order unique aircraft in Saratov
The US Navy Department intends to subsidize the development of an advanced Russian aircraft, which will eventually be extinguishing forest fires on US territory. This UFO-shaped flying machine is currently being designed by the Saratov aviation concern.
Many aircraft companies all over the world did their best to design similar flying machines. However, Saratov's aircraft designers managed to come with some unusual engineering solutions, also building a flying-saucer mock-up.
Designers managed to overcome vibration being caused by turbulence flows, after opting for the flying-saucer concept; this problem was also solved with the help of some other know-how. This flying machine is called the EKIP (Russian acronym, Ecology and Progress).
Moreover, the hovercraft's special coating enhances lift by 40 percent (with the help of turbulence flows). Consequently, the EKIP's payload accounts for only 40-45 percent of its mass; meanwhile the relevant aircraft ratio is 20-25 percent.
The EKIP boasts some other unique specifications; for example, it can transport 100-ton loads over several thousand km at 500-700 kph and at 8-13-km altitudes. This unique hovercraft can skim along at 160 kph just above the surface.
