ASEE administers, for the Office of Naval Research (ONR), the Summer Faculty Research Program and the Sabbatical Leave Program for U.S. citizens and legal permanent residents who hold teaching or research appointments at U.S. colleges and universities. The Summer Faculty Research Program is a 10-week program, beginning in May 2004. There are three levels of appointment: Summer Faculty Fellow, Senior Summer Faculty Fellow, and Distinguished Summer Faculty Fellow. Stipends range from $1,400 to $1,900 per week for the summer program. Each Fellow will be reimbursed for expenses incurred on an optional pre- program visit to the sponsoring laboratory and one round-trip encompassing travel to the sponsoring laboratory at the beginning of the program and travel back to their home residence at the end of the program. Relocation assistance is provided to qualifying participants. At the discretion of the Navy lab, Fellows may be allowed to bring a student to the lab to assist with the summer research. The Sabbatical Leave Program provides fellowship appointments for a minimum of one semester to a maximum of one year in length. Participants in the Sabbatical Leave Program receive a monthly stipend making up the difference between salary and sabbatical leave pay from their home institution. Relocation and travel assistance are provided to qualifying participants.

The Navy Hurricane Hunters
While this isn't OUR history, we are sometimes asked about the Navy Hurricane Hunters. This unit deactivated in 1975. They last flew the WP-3 "Orion" aircraft, similar to what NOAA flies today into hurricanes. Most of the remaining photos we have on this page are official U.S. Navy photos from 1958-62, when the Navy was flying the "Super Constellation", or "Connie" for short. This aircraft carried a crew of 22-28 persons (compared to our crew of six today!). It could remain airborne for 16-18 hours, and had two complete radar systems. The flight meteorologist (center) points out the hurricane which the crew and plane are about to penetrate. The aircraft commander (right) and radar officer (left) check out the plans. The aircraft flew a spiraling track into the eye. This differs from today's "Alpha Pattern", in which the aircraft flies directly to the eye, crabbing into the wind to keep the tracks straight. The radar officer's position was on the right side of the photo above. Posted on the bulkhead (wall) in the center of the photo was a copy of ditching and bailout instructions, a reminder of the hazardous nature of this job. This is a picture of a well-developed hurricane, as viewed on the Navy Hurricane Hunter aircraft radar. The dark spot near the top of the radar is the eye, a clear area. The thick, white bands are the "spiral bands" of thunderstorms, which feed into the hurricane. For this reason, these are also called "feeder bands". You can also see the eye is completely surrounded by clouds, which is what we term a "closed wall". Radar observations also include a description of the shape of the eye, and its diameter.

2 killed in Navy plane crash off coast of Alabama
From Paul Courson CNN Producer PENSACOLA, Florida (CNN) Two Navy instructor pilots died Friday when the training plane they were flying crashed in Alabama near the Gulf of Mexico. The T-34C propeller plane, assigned to the Pensacola Naval Air Station in Florida, crashed in a swamp and waterway area at the southern tip of Alabama, said Pensacola NAS spokeswoman Barbara Levick. The plane and two crew members were found in Alabama's Intracoastal Waterway, about three miles west of Fort Morgan, Alabama. The area is about 40 miles west of Pensacola, Levick said. She said the two were from the base's Training Airwing Six. They were the only two aboard the plane, which has a front-seat, back-seat configuration. The T-34 "turbo mentor" uses an airframe dating back to the 1950s. This particular plane was upgraded with a higher-powered engine some time later, but air station spokesman Ron Westlake did not have its maintenance history available. The model has had a history of trouble, including engine failures from repeated heating-and-cooling cycles, and propeller fractures.

Access to enviroinformation Italy furious after US Navy tried to cover up sub accident The US Navy covered up for nearly a month an incident during which a 7,000 tonne nuclear powered submarine from the US Navy’s Sixth Fleet in Italy ran violently aground in the Mediterranean Sea north of Sardinia last month, a US Naval official confirmed Thursday. An American Los Angeles class attack submarine. United States Navy Charles Digges The Los Angeles class submarine, the USS Hartford, hit the rocky sea-bed of the Mediterranean with such force that rudders, sonar and other electronic equipment were severely damaged, the US naval official said. The 114-metre long USS Hartford had left its Sardinian base at La Maddelena carrying Tomahawk missiles, possibly loaded with nuclear warheads, the British Independent reported. The US Navy official, who requested anonymity, however, would not confirm this. A near miss The USS Hartford was sailing east past the island of Capera where, soon after midnight on October 25th, it ran aground. The US Navy, said the naval source in a telephone interview from Washington, had “admittedly tried to keep a lid on the accident.” But US naval brass were apparently trumped when relatives of the submarines crew found out that the submarine’s scheduled six-month tour of duty was being cut short a month after it began and leaked the story to local media outlets, the US Naval source said.
