Since 1900, the worldwide population of hawksbills has declined by more than 80 percent, largely due to the trade in their beautiful shells. "We believe it is time to bring the same ethic of care that our lands have received for years to our oceans - before it's too late." – Roger Rufe, President Our Challenge To The World In 2001, we launched an unprecedented campaign to achieve wilderness protection for at least five percent of our oceans-similar to the amount the U.S. currently sets aside on land. Today, less than one-half of one percent (0.036%) of U.S. oceans is protected in this way. We are also seeking to protect ocean wilderness areas in select international locations, focusing on the Caribbean Sea. What is Wilderness Protection? An area designated as wilderness is unchanged by humans and actively protected and managed to preserve its natural conditions. A protected Ocean Wilderness Area is an area in which all fishing and other extractive activities are prohibited, where people take only pictures and leave only bubbles. In these areas, living marine communities have the opportunity to thrive, largely unaffected by human activities, and people can study, explore and experience ocean life in an untrammeled condition for generations to come. To be successful, Ocean Wilderness Areas need to be relatively large, generally at least 100 square miles. Ocean Wilderness Areas may be established in remote, isolated places such as Navassa Island, a U.S.-owned Caribbean island about 60 miles west of Haiti, or closer to home, such as the Tortugas, 70 miles west of Florida's Key West. They may be areas where the life within is still relatively untouched, or impacted areas that offer good opportunities for rejuvenation.
