Nature of the Work
The field of marine industry engineering can be classified in three distinct divisions: marine engineering, naval architecture, and ocean engineering. Marine engineering is concerned with the design, construction, operation, and repair or energy conversion devices and systems for marine applications. Marine engineers in the military usually work on the combat systems found on fighting ships. These rapidly changing systems provide some of the most interesting challenges in marine industry engineering. Naval Architecture is concerned with the design, construction, operation, and repair of marine vehicles. A naval architect might conc e p t ualize and develop a vehicle to meet the requirements of its owner, the ocean environment, and any interface with other transportation systems. Ocean Engineering is concerned with the design, construction, operation, and repair of offshore structures, systems, and related support facilities for the exploration, development, and recovery of marine resources.

OCEAN ENGINEERING/APPLIED MARINE PHYSICS
Ocean Engineering concentrates on problems associated with the interaction of the ocean and the works of man. A. The ocean engineer combines competence as an engineer with both a practical experience in and theoretical understanding of the ocean.
B. The Ocean Engineering program, offered jointly with the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, is intended to lay the foundation of this competence, experience and understanding.
C. The areas of faculty specialization in this program include coastal engineering, off-shore engineering, underwater acoustics, ocean measurements, marine geotechnics, and naval hydrodynamics. The Master of Science degree in ocean engineering is offered jointly with the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science.

Chairman's Message Welcome to the first edition of the MTS-Hawaii Newsletter. It's a new member service, and we'll be including information on past and future local meetings (what you may have missed and what you want to be sure to catch), national and local news about our industry, news about members (check out Meet our Members and Award Winning Members in this issue), and perhaps even a "classified section," where members can offer to donate gently used equipment to worthy students, etc. via MTS-Hawaii. Let us know what you think about this effort and what you'd like to see in future issues. Big Deal. It was certainly a big deal and a pleasure for me to accept the MTS Outstanding Section award on behalf of the Hawaii Section at Oceans 2002 in Biloxi. The award recognizes outstanding activities conducted in support of MTS. This is a singular honor for all the individual and corporate members of the Hawaii Section.

Outline of St. Petersburg State Marine Technical University
  • Brief History
Saint-Petersburg State Marine Technical University originated in 1902 as a Department of Shipbuilding of Saint-Petersburg Imperial Polytechnic Institute on the initiative of a well-known Russian scientist and Naval Engineer, later Academician A. N. Krylov. This year can be considered as the beginning of professional shipbuilding education in Russia. Later on, in 1930, the Department had branched off the Polytechnic Institute. In 1989 with the goal to widen the scope of its academic activities the Institute has changed its name to Saint-Petersburg State Marine Technical University (in short SpbMTU).
  • Present State
At present the SpbMTU is the leading educational establishment in Russia in the field of shipbuilding and ocean engineering with 5,000 full-time students plus 1,500 taking part time and evening courses. Academic staff of the University comprises 630 persons, the total personnel amounting to 3,000. Enrollment in 1995-1996 academic year has been about 900 new students. The University operates under auspices of the State Committee of High Education of the Russia Federation.

The Department offers graduate and undergraduate degrees in ocean engineering. In addition, we offer graduate degrees in naval architecture and marine engineering, ocean systems management, naval engineering, and oceanographic engineering. With approximately 120 of MIT's 10,000 students, it combines the advantages of a small, friendly department with the Institute's unparalleled academic and research assets. Students in search of a career that will both test and reward them should look to the sea-and to MIT's Department of Ocean Engineering. For more information, go to
