Outline of St. Petersburg State Marine Technical University Brief History Saint-Petersburg State Marine Technical University originated in 1902 as a Department of Shipbuilding of Saint-Petersburg Imperial Polytechnic Institute on the initiative of a well-known Russian scientist and Naval Engineer, later Academician A. N. Krylov. This year can be considered as the beginning of professional shipbuilding education in Russia. Later on, in 1930, the Department had branched off the Polytechnic Institute.
