mining of phosphate has been
the cornerstone of our economy.
At the end of this century, mining should have ceased,
which takes away the base of our economy,
phosphate is the only export we have.
Mining has made 7/8 of the country unusable,
which means that we cannot live on it,
we cannot grow on it,
it is useless when returned to the landowners."
Nauru Country Report.
PCRC/NFIP Conference, Suva, 1996.
Although Nauru is a single island nation several distinct racial types shared the same island. They were divided into 12 clans, each speaking different dialects. A clan did not align with particular territories but lived scattered throughout the island. Nauruans are a matrilineal people. They were divided into nobility and commoners. Families usually dwelt in separate units but they might combine with others to form common households. The Indigenous Nauruans link their culture to a mixture of settlers from their neighbouring island nations - Vanuatu, Solomon Islands and the other Micronesian nations. Their unique language is a fusion between the languages of Kiribati, the Federated States of Micronesia, the Marshalls and the Solomons.

Nauru
The Republic of Nauru, with a coastline of 30 kilometres, is an island situated north of the Solomon Islands and just south of the equator. The population is just 10,200 with the majority being Nauruan and the remainder being Asian and European. Nauruan is the main language, however English is widely spoken and understood. Nauru became an independent (and the world's smallest) Republic in 1968. The country's economy has traditionally been based on phosphate exports, although more recently tourism and the development of Nauru bas an offshore centre have become relatively more important. The Australian dollar is the currency of Nauru.

    • Ethnic groups Ethnicity is the cultural characteristics that connect a particular group or groups of people to each other. "Ethnicity" is sometimes used as a euphemism for "race", or as a synonym for minority group. While ethnicity and race are related concepts, the concept of ethnicity is rooted in the idea of societal groups, marked especially by shared nationality, tribal afilliation, religious faith, shared language, or cultural and traditional origins and backgrounds. Whereas race is rooted in the idea of biological classification of homo sapiens to subspecies according to morphological features such as skin color or facial characteristics.

    Nauru goes bankrupt
Remember Nauru ? That small Pacific island that got rich off phosphates? The BBC narrates: Nauru's rich reserves of phosphates - an ingredient for high-grade fertiliser - created enormous wealth during the 1970s and 1980s. The island's 10,000 inhabitants enjoyed one of the world's highest standards of living, as well as exemption from tax and immigrant labour to perform all menial jobs. But the phosphates have run out and things have turned sour.
