Indigenous People THE PEOPLE Inuit are a people who live near the Arctic. Their homeland stretches from the northeastern tip of Russia across Alaska and northern Canada to parts of Greenland. Inuit refers to the people formerly called Eskimos . The term Eskimo comes from a Native American word that may have meant 'eater of raw meat'. They prefer the name Inuit , which means 'the people' or 'real people' and comes from a language called Inuit-Inupiaq. The singular of Inuit is Inuk , which means 'person'. As the Inuit spread eastward, they modified their way of life to suit the Arctic environments they encountered. They caught fish and hunted seals, walruses and whales. On land, they hunted caribou, musk oxen, polar bear and other small animals. They used animal skins to make tents and clothes. They crafted tools and weapons from the animals' bones, antlers, horns and teeth. In summer, they traveled in boats covered with animal skin, called kayaks and in winter, on sleds pulled by

The idea of a national park was first formulated by painter George Catlin. In his travels though the American West, he became concerned about the future of the Native Americans he met and the natural wonders he saw. In 1832 he wrote that they might be preserved, ...by some great protecting policy of government... in a magnificent park.... A nation's park, containing man and beast, in all the wild and freshness of their nature's beauty!

West Coast in Wyoming
A bird’s eye view of coalbed methane in the Powder River Basin
As pressure to develop coalbed methane across BC increases, West Coast Environmental Law, along with the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society, decided to see first hand what its impacts have been on the ground. Last July, we invited representatives of 11 BC and Northern First Nations, several of whose lands are currently being impacted by coalbed methane development, on a tour of coalbed methane developments in the US. The Powder River Basin sits on the border of Wyoming and Montana. Its sweeping grasslands are home to ranches and extensive agricultural lands. On the Wyoming side, where coalbed methane development has been underway for over 20 years, there are the telltale signs of heavy industrial activity. A maze of roads have destroyed habitat, compressor stations hum incessantly, and produced water pits dot the landscape. Albert Genier, of the Na Cho N’Yak Dun First Nation, a member of the group, saw the impacts of coalbed methane development for the first time. “You can read in a book about how a skunk smells, but until it sprays you, you won’t know what it tastes like,” was how Genier characterized the visit. “Coalbed methane has left a bad taste in my mouth.”

Neah Bay, Wash. An ancient tradition resurrected after more than 70 years
is bound to take on some modern overtones in this case, high-speed boats,
high-powered weaponry, cellphones and helicopters. The Makah's ancestors were known as the West Coast's best whalers, but today's paddlers don't have the same connection with the sea. For their hunt, the traditional canoe was towed into position. Finally, after repeated attempts, they snagged one the ceremonial harpoon found its mark. But today's rules dictate as quick and humane a slaughter as possible. So while the three-year-old grey whale writhed in pain and television cameramen jockeyed to capture the action, the whaling party resorted to .50-calibre gunfire to finish the job. The sea turned red. A giant fishing boat was needed to haul the 30-tonne, 10-metre- long prize home. En route, the carcass sank to the bottom, retrieved only after an infusion of compressed air. Back on shore, unadulterated tradition was supposed to take over. After the recitation of an appropriate blessing (and a few flips off the leviathan's back), the butcher, an Inuk, took over.

Add Native Americans to demand compensation By Marty Logan Updated May 24, 2004, 10:59 am Refer this article Print page UNITED NATIONS (IPS/GIN) - The policy was to “kill the Indian and keep the man.” The aim of a boarding school system established by U.S. officials in the 19th century was to assimilate Native American children into the dominant White society, speakers told a panel discussion at the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues on May 12. That meant forbidding their languages, clothing, hair styles—their culture, in fact—using as much violence as was needed, they said. And now they are demanding restitution on their own terms.
